WISCONSIN: Lake Michigan – Rainbow & Lake Trout on Badger Tackle Reaper Spoon

Friday, September 14th, 2012

Fish Everywhere You Go In Milwaukee!

Surface temperature is 70 degrees and the fish are in the harbor and out to 190 feet of water.

East wind again
Warm water is back in after the northeast wind last weekend. Anglers are catching all species and you find the fish of your choice by working the temperature preference of your quarry.

The father son team of Brian and Michael Greenlees boated this great combo of Rainbow and Lake Trout in 155 feet of water on a Badger Tackle Reaper spoon. Reaper spoons are made by http://www.badgertackle.com

Presentations
Our best presentations are 8 color Cortland lead core and 225 copper on Church Walleye Planner boards. Downriggers 40 to 100 down and divers set to #2 with 125 to 150 feet of line out with the ring. Fish have been on regular and magnum spoons in a blue and silver or green and silver pattern. Our best boat speed is 1.7 to 2.0 mph on the Depth Raider.

Where!
Cold water is out over 100 feet of water 60 feet and down. Set up in 100 feet and troll east. Whitefish Bay is the shortest distance to deep water. Harbor fishing is turning on and on lumpy days you

WISCONSIN: Pelican Lake – Caught Smallmouth Bass on Nightcrawlers

Monday, August 6th, 2012

Was up at Pelican Lake for one whole week.

We didn’t catch any fish on a lure but we caught some perch, blugills, walleye, smallmouth bass on nightcrawlers. No bobber required two split shots and a size 6 hook in 15-17 F.O.W will produce large perch, big blugills, and a 11 1/2 in walleye over the course of 6 days.

Caught some small large and smallmouth bass on a worm with a bobber near the shore. Had a bite on a Mepps spinner bait that I was using for Northern.

Wish I caught more fish but had fun will probably go back there again. (I saw a massive smallmouth dead at a boat launch.)

WISCONSIN: We also had Action on Spin Doctors or Orange Flashers and Flies

Tuesday, May 1st, 2012

Weather blew us off on Saturday but Sunday was great. In the morning we had Coho Salmon, Brown Trout, one ten pound Lake Trout and Chinooks in the teens. Our new Lowrance HDS Gen 2 is keeping us on fish. The hot bait was the regular size Reaper Peacock. We also had action on Spin Doctors or orange flashers and flies. Check out the photo of Andrew Blade with a great 15 pound 8 ounce Spring King!!

How!
April fishing remains average to good when you can get out. The weather has created some problems with presentation and access to the best fishing areas. Our best presentations are 2,3,4,and 5 color Cortland lead core and downriggers 12 to 45 feet down. The fish have been on regular and magnum spoons. The Reaper Magnum and regular Peacock Silver spoon by Badger Tackle have caught most of our fish. Six inch orange dodgers and Johnnie Peanut Flies are also doing a good job. Our best boat speed is 1.7 to 2.0 mph. Slide Divers are producing very well set to #2 with 70 feet of line out.

Where!
Head northeast out the north gap Milwaukee and fish north in 45 to 70 feet of water. Out in front of the water filtration plant is a good option for small boat anglers. Water color may be an issue if it is cloudy move in and out of the cloudy water for the best action. The color break is holding most of the fish.

WISCONSIN: Lots of Small Perch

Monday, November 14th, 2011

Fishing Saturday 11am until sundown.

Lots of small perch. Battled the wind.

Watched a northern sit watching the bait by the boat for five minutes without taking it.

Still good to be out.

WISCONSIN: Magnum Reapers in Silver or Glow are my go to Bait for Shallow Water

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

Cold water and unsettled weather has turned on the fish. As of two days ago action was fantastic but this may all change on east gales. Eight to Twelve foot waves yesterday shut down any opportunity to get out and time will tell how the lake will respond after the blow. My guess is the fish won’t be affected significantly and will stay in the 55 to 100 feet of water. The big 20 pound Chinooks have been slow and may be done for this season.

How!

Try trolling the harbor with magnum glow spoons at first light. Magnum Reapers in silver or glow on 75 foot leads are my go to bait for shallow water trolling. Shore anglers, I recommend regular size Badger Tackle Vulcan spoons in the glow colors for the cloudy water of the harbor when working the browns. My top producer trolling the last trip out for all species was the Reaper and Vulcan magnum spoon on six and eight color leadcore. Down riggers 30 to 50 down with spoons also worked.

My lead cores and coppers all run behind a Church Walleye Board. When fishing deep braid divers no ring set to #3 with 65 feet line out are working. I use the Depth Raider to measure speed at the ball. The boat speed of 2.0 to 2.2 has been best.

Where!

The harbor is packed with 2-3 pound Brown Trout and you may find this an option for shore fishing. Boat anglers fish northeast out of Milwaukee north of the Filtration Plant 70 to 90 feet of water. Head out the Main gap Milwaukee 65 degrees for the best deep action.

Have a great fishing season.

WISCONSIN: Top Producer for Rainbows have been Reaper & Vulcan Magnum Spoons

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011

Warm water on northeast wind has again driven the feeding fish out to 125 feet and down 80 to 100 down. Eight to twelve pound Chinooks are plentiful with an occasional Lake Trout and Rainbow. The big 20 pound Chinooks are coming in with some action from 55 feet to the inner harbor. Glow spoons inside the break wall have been good at first light. Magnum Reapers in silver on 100 foot leads my go to bait for 50 foot of water.

How
My top producer for Rainbows have been Reaper and Vulcan magnum spoons on 6 and 8 color leadcores. Chinooks best on 300 and 225 copper rods also down riggers 80 to 100 down with spoons. Big Chinooks in close to shore are hitting Reaper Magnum Fish Fry Glow spoons 100 feet behind the ball off downriggers 20 feet down. Looking for Reapers and Vulcans made by www.badgertackle.com you may only order them online. Try them their shipping is cheap and they arrive fast. My lead cores and coppers all run behind a Church Walleye Board. When fishing in close wire divers have replaced the braid divers set to #2 with 100-120 feet if line out. A little faster speed about 2.2 is required for Rainbows. I use the Depth Raider to measure speed at the ball. The boat speed of 2.0 to 2.2 has been best.

WISCONSIN: Top Producers – Reaper and Vulcan Magnum Spoons

Thursday, August 11th, 2011

Milwaukee enjoys good fishing after east wind !

Our numbers have been great the last four days. All species have been active with warm water on top the fish have pushed down. Leadcores and divers best with action on downriggers as well. Magnum spoons are a good bet for the big fish. Surface water has warmed to 76 degrees and most of the action is 40 to 66 feet down. To get my fish reports and how to videos first go to www.jimhirt.com By subscribing you will keep ahead of the other anglers. When I post you will get it fast!

How

My top producer has been Reaper and Vulcan magnum spoons on 6, 8 and 10 color lead cores. Throw in a flasher fly on the downrigger and keep moving till you find action. Coho will hit all size spoons from 30 to 55 down off down riggers fifty to one hundred feet behind the ball. Tons of Rainbows hitting at the same depth or a little higher.

Try them their shipping is cheap and they arrive fast. Ten color lead behind a Church Walleye Board is one of our best presentations. Wire divers have replaced the braid divers set to #2 with 100-160 feet if line out.

Silver spoons have taken Rainbows to twelve pounds the last several days. A little faster speed about 2.5 is required for Rainbows. I use the Depth Raider to measure speed at the ball. The boat speed of 2.0 to 2.2 has been best. Don’t forget the Lake Trout near the bottom magnum Reaper glow spoons SLOW, SLOW, SLOW 1.5 or less will net Poor Mans Lobster. Currents are crazy out there if your not catching fish change directions and speed.

WISCONSIN: Coho Took the 5 Color Loaded with a Chart/Glow Protroll

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011

Fished both Saturday and Sunday AM. Fishing was pretty tough both days.

Saturday morning we went 7 for 9 (3 Kings, 3 Lakers and 1 Coho). We fished N of the towers and 60-70fow was the best depth. All the lakers came tight to the bottom on our deep rigger with a 10″ White Spin Dr. and Poseidon Green Machine Fly on a short 27″ lead. Need to constantly check that line though since it will get fouled up with weeds and mussels. The chunky Coho took the 5 color loaded with a Chart/Glow Protroll and First In Fire Fly. 15# King and 12# King took the 150 Copper with a Chrome Disco Tape Green Edge Protroll and Poseidon Super Frog. Last King of the morning about at 8#er took a Wonderbread Silver Horde on a rigger down 45ft. We also had a few drive by’s on our wire dipsies but we couldn’t keep the fish glued.

Sunday AM was slower for us. We went 5 for 6 (1 King and 4 Lakers) also lost a screamer. 5# King came on the 150 Copper with a Chrome Disco Tape Green Edge Protroll and Poseidon Super Frog. That setup also lost the only screamer of the day. After boredom set in we decided to work the bottom again and pounded out 4 lakers. 2 came on a Brad’s Blue Hawaiian with a 3 fly teaser rig behind a White Paddle, including a really pretty 14#er. Other two came on the same set that was working on Saturday which was the 10″ White Spin Dr. and Poseidon Green Machine Fly on a short 27″ lead.

Lots of fish marks and ice water in close but getting bites is pretty tough. We went as close as 35fow but the 60-70range worked best. The glow bite continues to suck for us, not a single sniff on glow spoons in the early AM either day. Sounds like there is more consistent action out deep in the 180 and beyond range.

Good luck.

WISCONSIN: Slammed the Walleye for 2 1/2 Hours

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011

Finally got down towards Oshkosh this year.

Have been fishing Menasha area with little success so far. Glad we did. Slammed the waleye for 2 1/2 hours.

My 10 yr old daughter and GF had fun with non stop action. At one point it was 6 walleye in a row without a sheep. We did catch some sheep and smallies in between. It was the first spot we stopped at. 6-7 FOW. South side of a reef. Slips and leaches were great and as a bonus I even caught some casting crankbaits (#5 perch). They were hitting hard.

Great cpl hours on the water. Didnt take pics.

The warm temps made me rush to get them cleaned and on ice when we got home.

Take a kid fishin!

WISCONSIN: Spoons are Now More Important Than Ever to Improve Catch

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011

Coho, Chinooks and Rainbow make up the majority of the catch with an occasional Lake Trout. Surface water has warmed to 58 degrees and most of the action is 25 to 50 down in the 48 degree water. Spoons are now more important than ever to improving your catch. They should be your go to bait as the water approaches the most active range of your favorite species.

How
With the warmer water the most aggressive Coho and Chinooks are coming on magnum spoons. Reapers and Vulcans made by www.badgertackle.com have been working for us. The Magnum Reaper Fish n Chip is the hot bait for the bright blue sky condition we have had the last two days. I have been running this spoon on all twelve of my lines and getting action all day long. 150 copper behind a Church Walleye Board is one of our best presentations. Six, eight and ten color leadcores are also working. Coho are from 25 feet to 50 down on downriggers as well. Chinooks are in pockets of colder 46-48 degree water. Wire divers have replaced the braid divers set to #2 with 60 to 120 feet if line out. The surface is almost sixty degrees and it is time to work the Rainbow Trout in the top twenty feet. Two and Three color leadcore with the Regular Vulcan Dolphin Green and Silver has taken Rainbows to twelve pounds the last several days. A little faster speed about 2.5 is required for Rainbows. I use the Depth Raider to measure speed at the ball. The big Chinook are hitting on Reaper Magnum Glow spoons. The boat speed of 1.9 to 2.2 has been best.

Where!
Fish east of Milwaukee 45 to 200 feet of water. Head out the Main gap Milwaukee 65 degrees. Fish northeast in White Fish Bay for the best action.

Have a great fishing season.

Let’s go fishing!
