WASHINGTON: Cowlitz River Remains the Best Bet for Summer Steelhead Anglers

Saturday, August 11th, 2012

The Cowlitz River remains the best bet for summer steelhead anglers.

The Lewis and Kalama also have fish but effort is tapering.

Anglers working the mainstem Columbia beaches in the region are still taking steelhead and an occasional chinook. With the promising chinook return this year, effort will bump quicker than usual in the coming weeks.

WASHINGTON: Cowlitz remains one of the best bets for steelhead

Friday, July 27th, 2012

SW Washington

The Cowlitz remains one of the best bets for steelhead with both bank and boat anglers doing well near the hatchery. This fishery should hold up for a few more weeks.

The bulk of the steelhead effort remains off of lower Columbia River beaches were numerous steelhead were taken last week by plunkers.

The Drano Lake fishery remains best outside of the lake itself. Mainstem anglers in the Bonneville Pool reported good steelhead results last week. The majority of the steelhead must be released however as they are of wild origin.

WASHINGTON: Plunkers Can Do Well on the Cowlitz and Lewis

Wednesday, January 4th, 2012

With district streams headed to the high water mark, steelheaders will be sidelined for several days. Plunkers can do well on the Cowlitz and Lewis but these rivers should be on the drop for action to be had. Fish close to shore with large spin-n-glos and shrimp or eggs for bait.

The Cowlitz is likely to produce the best results as it is getting a great return this year. The Lewis and Kalama Rivers will also likely be out through the weekend with boaters anxious to get back into fishable conditions after the long dry spell.

WASHINGTON: Cowlitz River Producing the Best Prospects

Monday, December 12th, 2011

Although steelhead aren’t swarming into district streams, they are returning in catchable numbers with the Cowlitz producing the best prospects. The Kalama and Lewis Rivers also have fish but should produce better results following the next rain freshet.

Side-drifters will take the lion’s share of the catch but plugs can become effective in the lower flows that most area streams are now experiencing.

Catches should improve through December.

WASHINGTON: Kalama Coho & Steelhead Best Catches for Boat Anglers

Monday, November 14th, 2011

Cowlitz River anglers are still catching fair numbers of coho and chinook. The chinook are dark and so are many of the coho. Steelhead action is fair around the trout hatchery with better numbers likely to show later this month.

The Kalama has some coho and steelhead with the best catches coming from boat anglers. The mouths of the Kalama, Lewis and Cowlitz is still producing an occasional bright coho.

The Klickitat continues to entertain casters seeking coho and the action will likely hold up through the end of the month. A higher percentage of fish are likely to be dark as the weeks progress.

WDF&W will open up a 2-day season at Long Beach, Twin Harbors and Mocrocks on November 11th and 12th.

WASHINGTON: On the Cowlitz – Sea-run Cutthroat Trout Action Picking Up

Monday, October 3rd, 2011

Coho catches were good prior to the recent weather change but have since become challenging. Sea-run cutthroat trout action should also be picking up.

Chinook are available on many district streams but regulations vary by watershed so check carefully before heading out.

Salmon and steelhead counts are continuing to decline but action at Drano and the lower Klickitat should continue to pick up. Coho action should pick up when temperatures begin to drop in the coming weeks.

WASHINGTON: Mouth of the Cowlitz is Producing Chinook, Coho & Steelhead

Tuesday, September 6th, 2011

SW Washington

The mouth of the Cowlitz is producing a mix of chinook, coho and a few steelhead. This will be a coveted hot-spot over the next several weeks as migrating chinook enjoy a cool reprieve from the warm waters of the mainstem. Wobblers and spinners will take the majority of the fish.

The Lewis does have some summer steelhead available but most anglers will wait for the late arriving coho.

Boat anglers at Drano Lake are still faring well for steelhead with chinook catches likely to improve in the coming days.

The mouth of the White Salmon River should also produce nicely for the next several weeks with chinook early and coho a bit later.

WASHINGTON: Morning Anglers Produce the Best Results

Monday, August 1st, 2011

SW Washington

The Cowlitz remains the best option for inland steelheaders. Good numbers of summer runs have been handled at the Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery Separator. Early morning anglers will produce the best results.

The Kalama and North Fork remain very slow.

WDF&W is reporting the likelihood of record numbers of summer steelhead handled in the month of July. Unfortunately, the department can’t be credited for the good success rates as the bulk of these fish are destined for Idaho and Oregon tributaries.

New salmon regulations go into effect on many district streams beginning August 1st. Be sure to check local listings.

WASHINGTON: Best Results for Plunkers Working Spin-n-Glos

Tuesday, July 19th, 2011

With low returns of salmon and steelhead to most tributary systems this year, anglers remain focused on the mainstem Columbia for what is expected to be an excellent summer steelhead return. Beaches from the mouth of the Kalama to the mouth of the Cowlitz will likely continue to produce the best results for plunkers working spin-n-glos in the fast current. Tip your lures with coon shrimp for best results.

Improving numbers of steelhead over Bonneville Dam has Drano Lake steelheaders ramping up effort. Numbers will only improve in the coming weeks with night time anglers likely to produce the best results. Persistent cool, high water however may keep fish from moving into these tributaries like they do most years at this time.

WASHINGTON: Good Results for Walleye & Bass

Friday, June 10th, 2011

Washington tributaries are experiencing low returns although the Cowlitz is putting out some fair catches of chinook. The Lewis and Kalama remain closed due to low returns.

Wind and Drano Lake are slowing down with much of the effort taking place higher in the watershed. Summer steelhead should begin to show in higher numbers in the coming weeks.

In The Dalles Pool, Washington anglers are scoring good results for walleye and bass despite high flows.
