GEORGIA: Lake Allatoona – Take Your Umbrella Rigs

Monday, October 15th, 2012

Line-Sides bite is Slow.

The lake is starting to turnover and the fish are scatter from one end of the lake to the other including the rivers.

These fish are on the move and are hard to stay on top of once you do find them. Then you throw in the full moon this pasted Saturday and the 3 plus inches of rain we had it makes fishing twice as tough as a normal turnover…

If your heading out this week be sure to take your Umbrella Rigs. The trolling bite isn’t much better then the live bait bite, but it will catch you a few fish this time of year…

I think we are getting just days away from a good bite.

The water temperature is in the middle 70’s and good things are just around the corner…..

MISSOURI: James River – Umbrella Rigs Continue to Produce on Windy Days

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012

Kimberling City Area:
The 3″ – 8″ of rain this past week have raised lake levels and lowered water temperatures throughout the lake. The Corps of Engineers have been running four generators since the weekend, pulling water and in turn fish out of flooded brush inundated by flood waters. The best bite has been on main lake and secondary points with Jewel football or spider jigs, split shot rigs and Jewel Squirrel heads. Most of the fish have been from the old bank line out to 20′ deep, work all of the baits slowly along the bottom to draw strikes.

James River:
Umbrella rigs continue to produce on windy days, look for fish to be suspended around standing timber 5′ – 15′ deep over as much as 30′ feet of water. Most anglers are having success with Zoom swimming flukes or Tightlines UV shad baits in natural colors. Jewel football jigs and Chompers Tubes are producing on main lake and secondary points as well, fish are being caught 10′ – 15′ deep, any shallower and moss becomes an issue.

White River:
Much like the James fish continue to be caught on umbrella rigs when the wind is blowing, points with isolated wood cover have been the best locations. In the very back of larger creek arms and up the Kings River Chompers McCutchen spinnerbaits have been very effective around laydowns and other cover. The beds that showed up last week in the Kings River have been vacant all week; cooler, dirtier water has moved fish off for a few days but they should be back by the end of the week.

Dam Area:
The deep bite is still hanging on but has waned over the past week with stained water and fish moving closer to the spawn. The best bite has been on gravel and mixed gravel and rock points near spawning locations. Jewel spider jigs and Squirrel heads, Tightlines UV beavers and finesse worms on split shot rigs and UV or Chompers tubes have all been very effective baits. Work the baits slowly along the bottom to draw strikes. Further upstream in Long Creek fish are beginning to move closer to the spawn, most of the beds seen by anglers before last week’s rain are vacant but fish are cruising the shallows looking for spots to make new beds.

ALABAMA: Smith Lake – Used a Stop & Go Pace for Dropping My Umbrella Rigs

Wednesday, January 4th, 2012

Friday – December 30, 2011

On Friday the day started out tough, after falling in the water and busting my butt. I had about 5 minutes to get things figured out and man up to go fishing. Friday the fish were more spread out. Most were still in depths of 25-40 feet, but we didn’t find any big groups of fish. We got more swats, than commitments. While we caught fish, most of them were small. We caught most our fish in Millers Flat.

Saturday – December 31st, 2011

I had two seniors from Athens High School whose dads wanted to give them a reward for all their hard work. Both young men on the boat are going to play college ball, one at Auburn and one at UAB.

Saturday morning was foggy and it didn’t lift until around 9:30.

We started on the back side of Goat Island and with no luck, we headed to Millers Flat. Upon arriving there, right away things were different. The bait and the fish were all pinned to the bottom in depths ranging from 45-65 feet mostly. Not many suspended fish; I used a stop and go pace for dropping my umbrella rigs to where they needed to be. 90% of our bites came when I put the boat in neutral, and allowed the umbrella rig to drop in more of a pendulum motion. After doubling up and catching several more, the bite seemed to fade. We headed back to Goat Island and pick up one more before we called it a day. All in all it was a good day, after a slow start things picked up and we had a good time. Hope everybody that took a trip with me last year had a good time and I look forward to all of this years trips.

ALABAMA: Hooked Several on Umbrella Rigs & Live Bait

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011

Sunday, rapped up a good week of fishing after the rain cleared out earlier this week.

I’ve spent time fishing everywhere from Rock Creek, Coon Creek, and now Goat Island. I was hoping the wind would lay down some, but it was steady and only got worse as the day went on.  We started south of Big Bridge and worked our way north.  We caught a couple stripe in Coon Creek, but nothing to talk about and started to move north.

We  stopped  at a couple places before ending up by Goat Island. We hooked several on the umbrella rigs, before putting them up and getting the live bait out. Hoping to increase our size, but it never did.  We caught fish good till about 10am, then it slowed down and we picked up two stripes drifting live bait  The stripe bite has finally picked up pretty good.  We caught them this morning in depths ranging from 20-35 feet.  We picked both of our earlier afternoon fish up in 45-50 feet.  The wind made it tuff for most of the afternoon as there was about a 15-20 mph wind.  No bass fishing today, pick two slots up by accident on bucktail jigs.  We fished different style umbrella rigs with both swimbait and bucktail rigs.  Bucktail rigs caught almost all the fish.  We used 4″ to 6″ Mister Twisters as trailers.  White was the top color with chart/white, and shad colors following.

Looks like I’ll get tomorrow in before the rain, weather looks good for this coming up weekend.

ALABAMA: We Used Umbrella Rigs & Live Bite, Bite was Steady All Morning

Tuesday, November 29th, 2011

After spending Wednesday and Friday chasing stripe, it’s been a good fishing.

While on Wednesday we caught bigger stripes, Friday was all about numbers. We used umbrella rigs and live bite, the bite was steady all morning. Alex, an 8 year old hooked his first stripe and caught a double on Friday. But he also had fun playing with the bait. We caught most of our fish 25-30 deep. While picking up a couple around 40 feet deep on live bait. We also caught several nice bass, most were caught on jerkbaits and scroungers. Bass busted off and on all Friday morning. I’ve been fishing within 4 miles of big bridge the last couple day and will continue tomorrow on my other trip.

Wednesday and Friday both were good trips, with good people.

ALABAMA: We Started with 2 Different Umbrella Rigs

Tuesday, September 6th, 2011

It’s been a pretty good week, even with the hot weather we’ve boated some good fish this week.

That continued this morning. I had three guys on the boat today, all from Alabama. They stated that they did a lot of fishing on the coast, but not much stripe fishing. So we loaded up at Ryan Creek Marina and headed south. We started with 2 different umbrella rigs. Both had bucktail jigs with just a little different color pattern on each.

As we got to our first spot, we set our lines out and I started working an area that paid off on Tuesday and Wednesday. But today was not Tuesday or Wednesday, it was Thursday and the fish had moved. I kept working the area trying to track them down, but with no luck it was time to move. Right across from the area we were fishing, there were a number of points and humps. So I drove us across the lake real quick to get a look. After running a 120 yard stretch and looking at my depth finder, I knew we had found what we were looking for. So we putted north and turned around. It didn’t take long…on our first pass we hooked up. It was small, but at least it was what we were looking for. Every pass after that we hooked up, with every fish getting bigger. Our last fish on that spot weighed just over 20 lbs.

After that we got some swats but no commitments. By that time it was 8:30 and the bite had changed. I told the guys that I felt our window had closed. We picked up another small stripe and a bass on two other spots. Today was another good day, just wish it was a little cooler so the bite would extend longer. All our fish were caught in depths from 20-30 feet.

I will start back running full day trips and afternoon trips when the weather starts to cool down. Right now the only time to be on the water is in the morning.

ALABAMA: We Started with Umbrella Rigs & Double Bucktails

Thursday, August 11th, 2011

This report is going to be short and right to the point. We killed it, that’s all there is to say.

I have been fishing from 5:00a.m to 9:30a.m. for over a week now. The last couple of days have been packed with action all morning.

My client called me Monday and asked how the fishing was. I told him that both Sunday and Monday morning we caught big numbers for summer fishing. He replied with I’ll see you in the morning. So we met at Big Bridge and left out at 5:00a.m. I told him we should only have a two minute ride and we should not have to leave the area all morning. As we pulled up, my client started singing and clapping some fish song he made up. Needless to say he want be getting a record deal anytime soon, but we both laughed and I hoped the positive mojo would help too.

We started with umbrella rigs and some other lines rigged with double bucktails. On our first pass one of the rods with the double bucktail started stripping line, so I rushed over to get the rod with the umbrella rig. As I was trying to clear the lines, my rod doubled over. We doubled up, so we thought. As he got his fish to the boat, I netted it with a rod in one hand and a net in the other. I quickly went back to reeling and as I got my first look at the fish I realized we had more than doubled up. I saw three stripe swimming every which way. We boated all three, which are in the picture. He looked at me and said 4 fish on the first pass, not bad. I replied with a high five and told him it had to be the fish song.

This trend continued almost all morning.

We doubled up countless times on the umbrella rigs. We caught 70% of our fish on umbrella rigs and 30% on the double bucktail rigs. With the 3 biggest fish come off the double bucktail rig, and weighed between 18-20 lbs. The bite was hot till 9:30 and than it was like somebody turned the lights off, it went dead. So we called it a day and headed back to Big Bridge.

Plenty of fish, no lost lures, and a short run make make for a great day in my book.

GEORGIA: Live Bait, Umbrella Rigs, Deep Diving Crank baits, Spoons & All work this Time of Year

Tuesday, July 26th, 2011

Linesides: Good !!!!

The fishing this week is the same as last week change nothing…. The Trolling bite is starting to over take the live bait bite on Lake Allatoona. The dissolved oxygen level on Lake Allatoona is making live bait fishing tough.

Shad have less then a five minute life span on a hook fish deeper then 20 feet right now. And the window of opportunity for catching numbers on live bait is less then and hour and a half right at sun up.

This is the time of year where trollers rule, and will for the next two months. The key to good numbers in late summer is to be “universal”. And what I mean by this is to be open mined every-time you head to the lake. Live Bait, Umbrella Rigs, deep diving, crank baits, spoons, and lead-core will all work this time of year. But when you combine all of these techniques into one outing the rewards just may out weight you catch. To me there is nothing more gratifying then to catch Stripers on more then one technigue on any given outing……So remember guys this is the time of year you may have to throw the kichen sink at them.

But if they are willing to eat it then throw it……

lol.
