FLORIDA: Redfish / Trout More Cooperative in Deeper Water

Friday, August 17th, 2012

Just trying to catch up here at Redfish U.

Running double trips for many days to come. No complaints here and it’s great being the most popular guide service on the Gulf Coast. Our mornings our full of speckled trout and redfish and our afternoons are full of sharks in celebration of Discovery Channel’s “Shark Week.”

The redfish/trout have been more cooperative in deeper water but we’re still getting plenty on Sebiles in the early morning. Slow Gulps! will sweep up the rest. The sharks are ranging from 2-5′ and are plentiful throughout the bay.

Doubles tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday and then throughout next week and another extended vacation may be in order.

Thank you Redfish University clients!!

LOUISIANA: Trout Eating Up Our Double Rigged Avocado Matrix Shad

Tuesday, August 14th, 2012

Good as it gets today, Seth Elbualy joined me today aboard the Big blue Wave to crush the trout and reds.

Dead calm seas had the water clean again and the trout in a feeding frenzy. Three stops to put our limits of trout and reds in the boat.

Our second stop found the trout eating up our double rigged Avocado Matrix Shad, Sparkle Beetles, TTF KFMS, and Cocodrie Cocahoes. The fish were not picky about color as they were eating up everything in sight. We left the trout biting and made one more stop. The reds were piled up like sardines and we had them coming in the boat every-cast also. After catching and releasing a minimum of 20 fish, I convinced Seth to keep a few. We loaded six of them in the Yeti and called it a day.

What a incredible day it was, thanks Seth for a incredible trip. Big thanks to Capt Anthony Kyzar for setting up this trip.

FLORIDA: Lake Worth Lagoon – Trout are Taking Live Baits

Monday, August 6th, 2012

The heart of summer and the inshore fishing has been stellar, sure its hot for anglers but nothing beats a bent rod. Low light hours are often the golden hours but rain storms at high noon can cool water temperatures causing a feeding frenzy.

Snook fishing along the beaches and inlets has been outstanding, snook are schooling willing take live baits and artificial lures. Both sides of the tides offer great numbers of hook ups, the average size of the snook has ranged from 10 to 25 pounds. Sight fishing in the morning offers great fly fishing action, nothing beats watching a snook inhale a bait.

The back bays and channels are holding nice sea trout averaging 3 to 7 pounds, trout this size are trophies and are known as gators . These trout are taking live baits, low light hours offer top water action with heddon spooks, flies and jigs work as well. Bait schools in the area offer clues the trout are in the area, either side of the tide produces fish.

Tarpon action is fantastic during sunrise and sunset, anglers looking for big fish the beaches and inlets offer 40 to 90 pounds class fish. The ICW offers schoolie fish weighing 10 to 30 pounds. Small tarpon are a blast willingly take live baits as well as 4 inch heddon spooks, clouser flies and jigs. The silver kings can be spooky at times, a stealthy approach is a must. I like to fish the outgoing tide for the tarpon as the clear water murks up the tarpon tend to chew better.

The mangrove shorelines and docks are holding a plethora species, snook, trout, redfish, jacks, bluefish and even triple tail are patrolling these areas. Look for bait schools and good current as areas to target these species. Birds are also a great clue fish are in the area, blue herons and pelicans can lead anglers to success.

CONNECTICUT: Trout Often Concentrated in Typically Deeper Locations

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012

Opening Day anglers found most streams at low levels with trout often concentrated in typically deeper locations. Fish were often seen, but weren’t always biting.

Sunday’s rains did improve conditions in many streams, as flows in most areas are now back up near to their typical spring levels.

Some nice fish came to net on Opening Day, with many over 20 inches. A 24.75 inch rainbow trout topped out as the largest trout reported this week. Best reports from the West Branch Farmington River, Farmington River, Salmon River (a 19”, 4.5 lb rainbow, a 5.8 lb rainbow and a 5 lb brown trout among the catches), Naugatuck River (15 trout for one angler), Farmill River, Pomperaug River (22” rainbow trout), Hockanum River, Farm River and Coginchaug River. Some action also reported from Sandy Brook, East Aspetuck River, Mill Pond Broad Brook, Saugatuck River, Pootatuck River, Scantic River, Mianus River, Pequonnock River, Yantic River, Fenton River Shetucket River, Hammonasset River, Eightmile (Haddam/Lyme) River, Moosup River and the Willimantic River TMA, although anglers had to work with very low flows and easily spooked fish in many places.

MISSISSIPPI: Ended the Day With 9 Trout, 4 Reds & 1 Flounder

Monday, April 2nd, 2012

…Now to get to the fishing…I had Will, Bill, Jim, and Mark on Saturday. The first three guys on the list surprised Mark with a charter for his birthday. Mark is a local contractor doing some great work with Habitat for Humanity. I will let you in on a little tip. If you are going to surprise your brother-in-law with a charter, don’t pop up at his house with all the kids and wives the night before, “Surprise we are all staying here for a couple days.” That was 13 people and 1 dog crashing Marks birthday weekend, non the less he seemed in good spirits and happy to be on the water with family. We pounded the marsh looking for that one great bite which did not come. All the trout and bait I was finding a week or two ago has seemed to vanish. I can’t figure it out, maybe the rain, maybe it was just the first wave of trout, and this next full moon will bring a new batch of fish. We did how ever supplement the lack of trout with red fish. We found plenty of reds we probably caught over 20, the size was not all there but the action was pretty good. We ended the day with 10 trout 8 reds and 2 flounder. Not the box full we were hoping for, but a beautiful day on the water with great people!

Sunday I had Pat and Ryan from Georgia. I met Pat at the Saltwater Sportsman Seminar a year ago. Pat and Ryan both were eager to get to the marsh and away from the sounds of slot machines for a little while. We did much of what I did the day before, hunting. We could never find more then one or two trout per spot. It wasn’t a matter of finding good water, I found some of the prettiest water I have seen in a week. Again the bait was just not there along with the fish. The bright part of the day was to see Ryan catch the first two reds, which were also his first two reds, on 10lb test. We get them in the boat and Ryan says,”That’s 4-4.5lbs”, so I weigh it and sure enough, 4.5lbs. Well, his dad Pat gets one in the boat and Ryan says,”That’s 6lb”, he was right on again. Come to find out he has been working in a meat market for ten years. These guys were a pleasure to be around and am looking forward to fishing with them in the fall. We ended the day with 9 trout, 4 reds, and 1 flounder.

FLORIDA: Decent Trout, Jacks, Ladyfish and Blues

Wednesday, January 4th, 2012

Dig-In-Anchors.comWell we are in the throws of our coldest weather of this season and this should motivate some fish while upsetting some others.

Recent trips included my long time clients the Browns from Evanston Ill. We worked hard but managed to put together a variety of fish including some decent Trout and Jacks,Ladyfish and Blues. With Dez Barry we found the action to be a little better as we got a red and a Snook as well as a mess of Trout and Ladys.

George Vogel went a couple of times and we had some fun with a 4Wt Flyrod and Trout and Ladyfish. Up the Sebastian river we got 8 Snook 2 LM Bass and a bunch of other stuff on 1/2/12

S CAROLINA: Three of Us Caught around 30 Trout

Friday, November 11th, 2011

Fishing in our area this fall has been a little different than the normal bite we generally see this time of year.

Our water temps continue to be in the mid 60’s inland, and we still have lots of mullet, and shrimp and menhaden in the estuary. Normally our water temps are a little lower, and the majority of the bait has moved out.

Our Redfish are not in the big schools that will be prevalent as the water temps fall. We are catching them here and there, but the big bites with double digit catch numbers have yet to show.

Did have an excellent trip last week where three of us caught around 30 trout, and a couple of nice Redfish to boot. Most of my Redfish trips have been under the double digit mark, but look for that to change as the weather cools off.

December could turn out to be one of our better months this year.

A $300,000 fish habitat project on the trophy trout waters of the San Juan River was in full swing Nov. 1, when crews move heavy equipment into a popular stretch of the river. Water flow from Navajo Dam will be reduced to 350 cubic feet per second to accommodate the equipment needed to improve trout habitat in “The Braids,” a small section of the river above Texas Hole, approximately one mile downstream from the dam. Anglers will not be allowed in the construction area for about 30 days. The project is designed to enhance fishing opportunities by creating deeper pools for fish during periods of low flow from Navajo Dam. The estimated completion date is Jan. 8.

Snagging season will be open at Heron Lake and Willow Creek Nov. 11 – Dec. 31. Reports of rainbow trout and lake trout are good from shore when using roe sacks. Trout are also fishing good with spinners and worms. If you hook into a salmon be sure to release it.

Jackson Lake
Trout fishing is reported as fair using Power Bait, salmon eggs and worms from shore. Spinners and black wooly buggers are reported working well on the back side of the lake.

Lake Farmington
Trout fishing is reported as good using Power Bait, salmon eggs and worms. Best success is reported close to the dam.

Morgan Lake
Fishing is slow for bass with very little traffic at the lake.

Navajo Lake
Special Kokanee Salmon Snagging Season Oct. 1 – Dec. 31. Salmon snagging continues to be reported as good at Simms Marina and at the dam. No reports on other species.
