CALIFORNIA: Sturgeon and Stripers Being Taken in the Napa River

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011

Joel Sinkay of Leonard’s Bait in Port Sonoma said, “ The sturgeon bite has begun with multiple limits being reported from the Pump House area of the San Pablo Bay with ghost shrimp, grass shrimp, or eel.

SInkay continues to catch and release legal stripers from the bait shop dock with grass shrimp, but pile worms and bullheads are also excellent choices. He added that, “Sonoma Creek has been good if you don’t have access to a boat, and sturgeon and stripers are being taken in the Napa River near the Highway 37 Bridge”

The Petaluma River has been a popular area for fishermen trying to get out of this week’s winds with reports of sturgeon starting to trickle in. Sinkay has ‘stuffed the tanks’ with bait.

CALIFORNIA: Sturgeon are Still Out There with Live Grass Shrimp

Thursday, August 18th, 2011

Warren Howe at Bay Tackle in El Cerrito said, “We finally have grass shrimp and bullheads in the shop, and everyone wants the bullheads for stripers off of the Pinole shoreline.”

He added, “Captain Bryan Chan scored limits of bass at the bottom of the tide on Monday at South Hampton Shoals, and the Berkeley Pier is perking up with 7 halibut taken on a recent weekday.” Howe finished with, “Everybody wants to go salmon fishing, and we are selling lots of 2.5-pound weights at $7.49/apiece to go with Green Label Herring or tray anchovies.” He wants to launch his kayak for white sea bass off of Santa Cruz this week, so we wish him well.

In the Napa River, Tom Dudenhoeffer of Sweeney’s Sports in Napa reported that the water has cleared up, and striper fishing is good with all techniques including trolling with RatLTraps or Rebels, fly fishing with Clowsers, or soaking cut anchovies. Sturgeon are still out there with live grass shrimp for the few anglers even interested.

CALIFORNIA: San Francisco – North Bay Bass & Sturgeon

Thursday, January 13th, 2011

A New Year is upon us and that means more than just purchasing another fishing license. With so many of our fisheries in trouble we suggest anglers join a group like CSPA, volunteer for CIFFI spawning takes, get your kids out for a day in the field with CWA, or write a check for a group or cause you can stand behind. There are literally dozens of groups both worthy and in need of your support. If more California anglers were to mark a day off their calendar or put a crowbar in their wallet, the future of our fisheries will be brighter.

Keith Fraser at Loch Lomond Bait in San Rafael
Cold and breezy with few anglers out on the water. He is working hard to get in a supply of live mud shrimp in anticipation of this coming weekend’s excellent outgoing tides. We expect some impressive scores in the coming days with this series of tides so make plans to get in on the action.

Rav Prasead of Bay Tackle in El Cerrito
Sturgeon fishing has been very good in San Pablo Bay in the famed “Sturgeon Triangle” from Marker 7, the Shellbanks, and the Pumphouse. Live mud shrimp has been the top bait; but in the absence of live mud shrimp, frozen mud shrimp will do. Bay Tackle anticipates obtaining a supply of frozen mud shrimp by mid-week. One boat has caught and released a total of 13 sturgeon to 79-inches between the Pumphouse and Rat Rock. The mouth of Sonoma Creek has also been a productive area. Perch fishing in the bay remains very good, and Prasead caught and released 32 assorted pogy, pile, walleye, and splittail perch at Point Molate in two hours on pile worms on a recent trip.

Ly Tu at Ly’s Fishing Goods in San Jose
South bay sturgeon has been hit or miss with a few fish taken on a daily basis. Ghost shrimp/herring combinations are still the top bait, and the fish have been lining up along the main channel. One boat out of six in a line was able to land two diamondbacks at 51 and 51-inches. Tu said the fish that have been caught are very fat and healthy. Tu will be moving his shop on Friday, February 18th to its new location at 699 Brokaw Road in San Jose. There will be a grand opening on this date with sales on a number of items.

Tom Dudenhoeffer at Sweeney’s Bait in Napa
Sturgeon fishing was excellent in the Napa River on Saturday, but it has slowed down in the past couple of days. The fish are still holding in the lower river below the 37 Bridge during periods of low tide and moving up into the sloughs such as Napa Slough, South Slough and the main river near the Brazos Bridge on high tide. Live grass shrimp is still the best way to go.
