CALIFORNIA: Sturgeon and Stripers Being Taken in the Napa River

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011

Joel Sinkay of Leonard’s Bait in Port Sonoma said, “ The sturgeon bite has begun with multiple limits being reported from the Pump House area of the San Pablo Bay with ghost shrimp, grass shrimp, or eel.

SInkay continues to catch and release legal stripers from the bait shop dock with grass shrimp, but pile worms and bullheads are also excellent choices. He added that, “Sonoma Creek has been good if you don’t have access to a boat, and sturgeon and stripers are being taken in the Napa River near the Highway 37 Bridge”

The Petaluma River has been a popular area for fishermen trying to get out of this week’s winds with reports of sturgeon starting to trickle in. Sinkay has ‘stuffed the tanks’ with bait.

GEORGIA: Caught Stripers Up to 20 pounds on Bone Super Spooks

Monday, October 17th, 2011

The top water striper bite on Lanier has been this good the past few days.

We have caught many stripers up to 20 pounds on Bone Super Spooks and on that new color of Redfin called “Chicken Scratch”. The blowups on the Redfin the last few days have been amazing. We are seeing some good schools on top most days and we are also doing well on the Redfin, while blind beating as many points and humps as we can.

The lake was slick this morning in most places. It was nice to see that week old strong east wind finally leave us. Freelined bluebacks fished around the schools of busting fish are also working for those folks that don’t like to cast.

CALIFORNIA: Stripers Found ‘here & there’ Off of the Pinole Shoreline

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

The stripers are slowly pushing south and on this next set of big tides we expect to see a big uptick in bass counts.

Emeryville Sport Fishing had three trips out on Monday, and the New Huck Finn put in 12 stripers to 10-pounds and 56 Dungeness crab for 14 anglers. In addition to their live bait potluck trips, the Sundance will be taking a sturgeon trip on Sunday to San Pablo Bay captained by R.J. Waldron. The New Huck Finn put in 8 halibut to 14-pounds to go with 2 stripers to 7-pounds for their 14 anglers on Tuesday 6-14. They have room daily this week for bay potluck, coastal rockfish and salmon if the coastal winds ever lay down.

George Liu of Bay Tackle in El Cerrito said stripers have been found ‘here and there’ off of the Pinole Shoreline with live bullheads. They have been able to obtain around 20 dozen bullheads in the shop, and the stripers have been prefering the small baits instead of cut baits. A few sturgeon have been landed from the banks, but the best bite continues to be from boats in the Pumphouse area. They have plenty of frozen mud shrimp, ghost shrimp, pile and blood worms, and mudsuckers in the shop.

GEORGIA: Good Mix of Stripers & Spots on Spro Dawgs

Saturday, June 11th, 2011

Since my last report our boats have enjoyed great striper fishing on downlined bluebacks fished 25 to 35 feet deep over a 35 to 60 foot bottom. We are still seeing a good mix of stripers and spots on Spro Dawgs, Sammies, and Spooks early each morning.

These fish have been up busting, on and around points and humps. U-rigs are also working well. Our boats are catching stripers in the mouths to the middle of creeks and on the main lake. The stripers are really bunching up well and will black out your screen. Most of the time they will bend all four rods at the same time when they are thick under your boat. If you are getting window shopped while downlining and the fish are on the screen, change your bait frequently, and start letting your bait all the way to the bottom and slowly wind it up to the surface.

Keep doing this while they are on the screen. Some days they really like the bait moving up and down. Overall, the striper fishing has been great over the last two weeks. We are moving into the heart of the summer and can expect great fishing most days from now thru Oct.

Good Fishing.

GEORGIA: Caught Stripers & Spots on Spro Dawgs, Sammie’s, Bone Spooks

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

We’ve been out everyday and have seen a mix of stripers and spots on our boats.

Early mornings,we have caught stripers and spots on Spro Dawgs, Sammie’s, Bone Spooks, and on freelined bluebacks. Fish as many points, humps, and reef poles as you can. Up the lake, and after the sun gets up high down the lake, your best bet will be to downline bluebacks 20 to 25 feet deep over a 30 to 35 foot bottom, on and just off points.

Capt Mack’s 4 arm u-rigs fished 60 feet behind the boat are also producing. We have seen good schooling some mornings and late afternoons on the stripers.

Freelined bluebacks and just about any topwater lure will work when casting into these surfacing fish. These surfacing fish have been so aggressive, they are hitting the lure while it is sitting still on the water or just after it starts moving.

Overall, the fishing has been good on Lake Lanier. Be flexible and willing to change patterns depending on what you see each morning or afternoon.

GEORGIA: Stripers and Spots on Points and Humps

Monday, April 18th, 2011

Since my last report, I’ve been putting quick reports on my Twitter feed.

The fishing has been up and down which is common with this ever changing spring weather. We’ve had days where they’ve been on fire and days when you’ve had to work for them.

There are stripers and spots on main lake points, humps, and reef poles both north and south. We’ve had boats out everyday on morning and afternoon trips and both have been great when the fish have been up and active.

Freelined bluebacks and gizzard shad are working best as far as live bait goes. Mc Sticks, Redfins, Scroungers, Flukes, and Fishhead Spins have all produced lately. We are catching and releasing school size stripers, nice spots and a few largemouth while beating the banks with the lures mentioned above. Keep moving and cover as much water as possible for best success.

Good Fishing.

GEORGIA: Stripers, Spots, and Crappie on Lake Lanier.

Saturday, March 19th, 2011

The bigger stripers are up shallow on Lake Lanier and freelined bluebacks, white bucktails, and Spro Mc Sticks are all working.

There are a few stripers in the backs of all the stained creeks and we are seeing surfacing fish out over deep water most mornings. These surfacing stripers have been in the middle to the mouths of creeks. North and south have been about the same on the stripers. We are starting to catch and release some really big spots up shallow while striper fishing. The crappie fishing is really good right now back in stained creeks.

Good Fishing.

GEORGIA: Lake Lanier – Stripers are Moving Shallow

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011

With the warming temps (waters in low to mid 50’s) the stripers are getting active.

There is still a lot of dead bait around, but the bigger fish are wanting larger baits, in preparation for the up coming spawn. The backs of the creeks on the lower end are your best bet, pulling large trout or gizzards right up on the bank with planer boards, with a couple of flat lines and a floater out the back is ticket.

GEORGIA: Lake Lanier Fishing – Stripers Moving Back in the Creeks

Wednesday, February 9th, 2011

Your best bet is to fish free lined and planer board bluebacks, trout, and gizzard shad in the backs to the middle of creeks.

Cast a white ½ oz. buck tail or a Spro Mc Stick to the banks while you are free lining. Look for single stripers boiling on top. We are seeing a decent shad kill and the seagulls are a little of a distraction right now as they are diving randomly and picking up dieing bait. If they are tightly bunched up, hovering, and diving in one place, then that’s what you are looking for. If they pick up one piece and then fly on, that’s shad kill.

Capt. Mack’s 4 arm u-rigs pulled over humps are catching a few as well. Sorry for not having any pictures, one of my customers accidently picked up my camera when getting off the boat and are shipping it back to me.

GEORGIA: Lake Lanier Stripers are Moving Deep!

Tuesday, December 14th, 2010

The cold weather we have had this week has dropped the lake temperature to the high 40’s and low 50’s.

The backs of the creeks are colder than the middle of the creeks consequently the bait has moved from the back of the creeks to the middle. Look for the bait mid way back in the creeks 30 to 40 feet deep over a 40 to 70 foot bottom. The bite has changed from free lines and planners shallow to down rods and Umbrella rigs over a 40 to 70 foot bottom.

A four arm Umbrella rig pulled 100 to 120 feet back makes a great search tool and when you find the fish you can catch some good numbers. Herring, Threadfin shad and Trout on down rods will all work. The North end of the lake has slowed but the South end remains strong. Baldridge, Shoal, Four Mile and Six Mile are good starting points. I have not had any reports on Flat Creek but the fish should start to move into the back of Flat this week.

It is cold and there will be ice in your boat and the boat docks most mornings.

Be careful out there!
