WASHINGTON: Cowlitz remains one of the best bets for steelhead

Friday, July 27th, 2012

SW Washington

The Cowlitz remains one of the best bets for steelhead with both bank and boat anglers doing well near the hatchery. This fishery should hold up for a few more weeks.

The bulk of the steelhead effort remains off of lower Columbia River beaches were numerous steelhead were taken last week by plunkers.

The Drano Lake fishery remains best outside of the lake itself. Mainstem anglers in the Bonneville Pool reported good steelhead results last week. The majority of the steelhead must be released however as they are of wild origin.

NEW YORK: Fishing is Very Good to Exceptional for Coho Salmon, Brown, Steelhead & Rainbow Trout

Monday, December 12th, 2011

Today is Monday December 12, 2011. Well here we are in the second full week of December and the only place anyone in Orleans County is Ice fishing is in their freezer.

With the mid week temperatures predicted to be in the low 50’s, I wouldn’t be breaking out the ice fishing gear yet.

Fishing on the open waters of the tributaries within Orleans County is at very good to exceptional level for Brown trout, Coho salmon and Steelhead/Rainbow trout fishing. The delayed release of water from the Erie Canal and the rains that we have had over the past week or so is keeping the water levels of all of our tributaries at good to slightly above level. Water clarity remains at a slightly stained state which makes for tremendous tributary fishing. The mid week prediction of more rain means that this trend should continue through at least the end of the year if not longer.

All seems quite on the smaller lakes within the county and the only other positive fishing note seems to be fairly good catches of Perch from the bridges area of the oak all the way North to the Point. This is the time of year that you can always find that stretch of water for you to enjoy with no one else on around to share it with.

Let’s make everyday a great fishing day, right here in Orleans County.

WASHINGTON: Kalama Coho & Steelhead Best Catches for Boat Anglers

Monday, November 14th, 2011

Cowlitz River anglers are still catching fair numbers of coho and chinook. The chinook are dark and so are many of the coho. Steelhead action is fair around the trout hatchery with better numbers likely to show later this month.

The Kalama has some coho and steelhead with the best catches coming from boat anglers. The mouths of the Kalama, Lewis and Cowlitz is still producing an occasional bright coho.

The Klickitat continues to entertain casters seeking coho and the action will likely hold up through the end of the month. A higher percentage of fish are likely to be dark as the weeks progress.

WDF&W will open up a 2-day season at Long Beach, Twin Harbors and Mocrocks on November 11th and 12th.

OREGON: Southwest – Bait Fishers Can Now Feed Salmon Eggs to Steelhead

Monday, November 7th, 2011

Offshore bottom fishing has been excellent when boats have been able to get out. The ocean is closed to crabbing through November.

Trollers in Winchester Bay have been catching fish daily but the number of fish has started to wane. Crabbing is good in the bay.

Chinook fishing has remained steady in the lower Coquille River for boaters trolling herring.

Crabbing is excellent in Coos Bay from boats as well as from the docks although Dungeness are not yet in prime condition. Chinook catches have slowed.

Chinook are in evidence but off the bite on the lower Rogue. Steelheading has been good on the middle river. The flies-only restriction on the Rogue above Shady Cove has ended. Bait fishers can now feed real salmon eggs to steelhead which are dining downstream of spawning chinook. No bait is allowed below Shady Cove to the old Gold Ray Dam site but artificial lures are OK to use in addition to flies.

Brookings area trollers have been making steady catches of chinook. Jetty anglers throwing spoons are also hooking up with a 50-pounder landed last week. The Chetco is scheduled to open above River Mile 2.2 on November 5th but the opening is contingent upon water levels.

While water levels are still fairly low, chinook fishing was very good at the Elk River late last week but slowed as hundreds of anglers stormed the area. The Sixes River is producing fair to good catches of chinook in tidewater.

WASHINGTON: Mouth of the Cowlitz is Producing Chinook, Coho & Steelhead

Tuesday, September 6th, 2011

SW Washington

The mouth of the Cowlitz is producing a mix of chinook, coho and a few steelhead. This will be a coveted hot-spot over the next several weeks as migrating chinook enjoy a cool reprieve from the warm waters of the mainstem. Wobblers and spinners will take the majority of the fish.

The Lewis does have some summer steelhead available but most anglers will wait for the late arriving coho.

Boat anglers at Drano Lake are still faring well for steelhead with chinook catches likely to improve in the coming days.

The mouth of the White Salmon River should also produce nicely for the next several weeks with chinook early and coho a bit later.

NEW YORK: Lake Ontario – Salmon River

Sunday, May 9th, 2010

The Oswego Harbor is producing some nice catches of brown trout as well as a few nice atlantic salmon. I know of several weighing in between 10 and 12 pounds. What a nice bonus to find when you are really only looking for 3 to 5 pound trout.

The lakeshore is fishing well as boaters are finding brown trout trolling along the shore in 10 to 20 ft. of water, primarily at the mouths of the tributaries. Stickbaits and small spoons in black and silver are working the best. Troll slow and concentrate your efforts in and around the warmest water.

The Bull head fishing is just getting underway and conditions will really improve over the next few weeks as the water warms and fish move in. Top spots include North and South Sandy Pond, The Salmon River Estuary, The Grindstone Marsh and the Little Salmon River.

The salmon river flow is very low, but dropback steelhead are being caught from top to bottom.
Worms, beads and egg sacs are working best. Fish the fastest deepest runs you can find. Don’t waste your time in the slow pools. The fishing this week has been good!

Some recent pics. Sorry for the lack of updates. I have 12 more days on the river if I can get them in and I get a much needed break and will update more often.
