MISSOURI: Table Rock Lake – Spinnerbaits & Shallow Crankbaits Have Been Best

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

Kimberling City Area:
water levels stabilized over the past week, the Corps of Engineers lowered the flow through the dam and levels on Table Rock rose slightly over the weekend. The drop in current caused fish to scatter and move into flooded brush over the weekend setting up some exciting shallow water action. Chompers McCutchen spinnerbaits, Heddon Spooks and Jewel Eakins jigs accounted for several fish over the weekend most of which came from shallow bushes and timber in areas where the bank was accessible.

James River:
The James River is beginning to clear above Cape Fair. There is a distinct mud line traveling through the lake with stained to relatively clear water above and below it. In the stained water spinnerbaits and shallow crankbaits have been the best presentations. Look for shallow cover and make multiple casts from different angles to draw strikes from fish waiting to ambush bait fish. During mid day hours fish are still being caught on main lake and secondary points with Jewel football jig and J tail trailer combos where the water is stained.

White River:
The topwater bite has been king on the White River early and late this past week; spooks, sammys and red fins are all producing post spawn fish holding in and around flooded timber. As the day wears on Chompers McCutchen spinnerbaits and Jewel jigs have been key presentations around flooded brush. While many fish have moved shallow into the brush there are still several fish holding tight to the old bank line particularly during midday hours.

Dam Area:
The lower end has been dominated by the smallmouth bite, quantity and quality can be caught fifteen to twenty five feet deep on gravel points throughout the dam area. Chompers finesse tubes have been the best bait, green pumpkin, watermelon red and pumpkin green flake have been the dominate colors, rig the tube on a quarter ounce head with an exposed hook and drag it on the bottom for bet results. The topwater bite has been very good early and late on the lower end as well, spooks and red fins have been the best presentations.

LOUISIANA: Baby Brushhogs, Spinnerbaits and Flukes

Friday, May 6th, 2011

Got a little break from the catch up work I’ve been up to and jumped at the chance to take a buddy out to Lake Cataouatche last Friday afternoon.

Two stops and it was on. Baby brushhogs, spinnerbaits and flukes. We ended up catching a dozen or so nice bass. The water near the marsh was perfect and loaded with bait.

Should continue for a while once the south wind lets up some and the water starts falling hard again.
