FLORIDA: Tampa Redfish, Snook & Speckled, Sea Trout are Starting to Fatten Up

Monday, November 7th, 2011

Changing water temperatures in Tampa Bay have sparked a good inshore chew!

Tampa redfish, snook and speckled sea trout are starting to fatten up for the winter months ahead. Look for them to start bunching up in river mouths and deeper backcountry cuts as they make their way up into the rivers towards their Tampa Bay winter time huants.

There is still plenty of white bait around in Tampa Bay and chumming with live pilchards will continue to prove productive until the first freeze. Once water temps start to dip into the low 60’s the game will change. Tampa Redfish and snook will start to slow down as they attempt to conseve energy, during this time a slow retrieve produces the best results. cutting the tails or fins on your white bait & pinfish will slow them down and increase your hook-up percentage. Fish the bottom with cut bait, shrimp or artificals, a slow retrieve is going to be vital for suscess during cold water condtions. Exspect the snook bite to diminish once water temperatures drop below 60 degrees. Redfish are more cold water tolerant and should continue to feed, but with less vigor.

Tampa’s speckled sea trout are becomming more active, this is a time great to dust off your favorite top water plug! Shrimp on a popping cork will also get it done , but for big gator trout nothing beats a big pinfish! Trout season in our region will close for the months of November & December, so catch and release with care.

Till Next Time Have A Safe And Quality Day On The water!

FLORIDA: Snook, Redfish, Mangrove Snapper, Flounder & Jack Crevelle Caught Along Oyster Bars

Monday, October 31st, 2011

Fishing started out pretty good and improved throughout the week. Very low tides have speckled trout and Spanish mackerel cruising the edges of grass flats that fall sharply into deeper water. Snook, redfish, mangrove snapper, flounder and jack crevelle are being caught along oyster bars and mangrove shorelines on the north end of Siesta Key. Live pilchards and threadfins accounted for most of the fish.

Long time client Terry Mark from Olean NY fished with me on Monday. We did well on Spanish mackerel to 3 lbs, speckled trout to 17″and ladyfish near the Ringling bridge. We ran to the mouth of Phillippi Creek and caught a couple of 3 lb jacks.

On Tuesday, Cathy and John Mlotzek from Ohio did very well despite a stiff NE breeze, landing 5 fat trout in the slot along with several Spanish mackerel, a bunch of ladyfish, and a couple of small flounder on live bait near Bird Key.

Wednesday was terrific! Keith Williams and his son Thomas from the UK experienced non-stop action on mackerel, decent trout, and large ladyfish near Bird Key. We then worked bars and shorelines at the north end of Siesta key and caught redfish, jack crevelle, flounder, and mangrove snapper. Thomas completed his “slam”, landing a snook on his last cast!

Wil Rutenschroer and his son Gary from Cincinnati, Oh fished with me later in the week. Action on speckled trout was very good, with the two of them landing fish of 24″, 21″, and 19″ on the deep edges near Bird Key. The fish hit large live shrimp. I netted up some bait and they caught Spanish mackerel and ladyfish, too. We finished up catching mangrove snapper and jack crevelle near the Stickney Pt Bridge.

FLORIDA: Redfish & Snook Are Under Docks and Near Structure

Monday, October 24th, 2011

Fishing was good early in the week, the middle was pretty much shut down due to our first strong cold front of the fall season.

Friday and Saturday were typical post cold front days with high pressure and blue bird skies, good bite early then tapered off as the northeast winds cranked up. Spanish mackerel, speckled trout, and ladyfish are plentiful on the deep flats. Redfish and snook are under docks and near structure on the north end of Siesta Key.

Charters on Sunday and Monday were similar as the front approached. Winds were stiff out of the east. Jeff Gorosh from St. Loius, MO took out his boys Sam and Dave on Monday. We started at first light tossing plugs for snook, but only fooled one small snook and a 3 lb jack crevelle. Chumming with threadfins on the flats near Otter Key produced nice sized Spanish mackerel, speckled trout, and ladyfish. We finished up in Phillippi Creek catching another couple of jacks, a half dozen mangrove snapper, and a redfish.

On Friday Richard Fildes from Orlando took out his future son-in-law Philippe out fishing. We started off at Stephen’s Pt., but action was spotty. We ran up to Helicopter Shoal and had good action on decent sized speckled trout along with a couple of Spanish mackerel on plugs and Gulp! Shrimp. We finished up near the Mercury Hole and behind the ski jump catching a few trout, jacks and ladyfish. Saturday morning’s charter was about the same at the Shoal, although the trout ran a little smaller.

FLORIDA: Tarpon, Snook & More Available from Venice to Boca Grande

Tuesday, July 19th, 2011

Tarpon, snook, and more are still available from Venice to Boca Grande.

We needed rain and we are now getting it frequently. The fresh water moves the fish around as salinities fluctuate and keeps out going flows darker with tannin. The incoming tides are still nice clear Gulf waters. I’m not working as much now so some days are catching up at home with a few on the water fishing.

Tarpon are still here, we found plenty around the Big Pass on Friday afternoon. The fish were working from the inside to off shore on the high tide change. We hooked a big one on a mutton minnow by the Oil Docks; but it pulled free on the second jump. Everyone gets excited but you must ease off the pressure as they jump, “bow to the king”. Tarpon are so awesome that most folks freeze when they actually hook up the first time. A giant silver missile, six, seven, even eight feet long; launching twenty feet or more, into the sky. Plus line screaming off of your reel with the power of a rocket just might over come all your senses. Your eyes are spell bound and you just can not hear us begging you to react. All you can do is laugh afterwards; especially when it happens to your buddy that was just teasing you. It would be great to video for entertainment back home.

We still have scattered tarpon patrolling our Gulf Beaches from Boca up to Venice cruising into and out of Boca Grande Pass. Some fish are due to feed up into Charlotte Harbor any time. We only have hundreds of fish, not the thousands we have enjoyed but the crowds are gone too! It can be hot but I do have the T Top for shade.

Snook are not thick as last month but we still are seeing schools and some big trophy linesiders. We caught plenty on recent trips last Thursday and Friday. My Uncle Guy Lewis and Betty were visiting from Greenville, South Carolina last week. We found plenty of trout and snook to keep them busy. We even cast netted a mess of mullet for them. We ate all fresh fish we could at the Stump Pass Grille. Then I smoked a mess for them to take home and share with the rest of the family.

The trout are plentiful but we saw large diversity in their sizes. We had loads of almost big enough fish and several slot fish. We even had some nice seventeen and eighteen inchers and a twenty four inch monster. We have plenty of minnows right now but most are small. It looks like we could enjoy great fall fishing if the baitfish hang around as they grow up.

We also have some exciting fishing near shore if we can match your trip to fair weather. Some mornings have been great other windy and rain. We have some mackerel, barracuda, sharks, and more available. Plenty of fishing action, plus beautiful Gulf waters and beaches.

Let’s Go Fishin’ soon.

FLORIDA: Tarpon, Sharks, Snook and more in Southwest

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

Over the past week or so weather has dictated how and where we fish, and what we target. Of course it’s tarpon time in southwest Florida, for many anglers that’s the primary target.

When the weather allows and the seas are calm tarpon fishing has been good, but not consistent off the beaches from Ft Myers to Cayo Costa. With better tides and hopefully good weather the bite should improve over the upcoming week.

When tarpon weren’t cooperating over the slower tides we have been catching blacktip and lemon sharks in the five to six foot range in or near the Gulf Passes. As we head into summer the warmer water has brought us a lot of sharks of all sizes, large blacktips are one heck of a battle and a very under rated gamefish, these brutes have no quit in them.

Snook, redfish and trout fishing was best over the windy days. Snook and reds were found off Island points and oyster bars with the southerly wind pushing water past.

Trout were found over a grass/sand bottom in six to eight foot depths, a few larger fish were also caught in potholes.

Spanish mackerel action remains good in Charlotte Harbor even during the very slow tide days we experienced this week. Bluefish, trout and about all the small sharks you care to catch are also mixed in.

After several days of a consistent weather pattern with light winds tarpon and baitfish are schooling up again and fishing should continue to improve as we head into the holiday weekend and into the month of June.

Have a safe Memorial Holiday weekend.

FLORIDA: Tarpon, Sharks & Snook Headline Inshore Action This Week

Saturday, April 16th, 2011

Water temperatures are now in the mid 80’s and the inshore action is starting to evolve into a pattern more typical of May or June.

My favorite fish to catch are the juvenile tarpon in the back bays. Here is Bob with an April release…

Tarpon are all over the Naples and Marco Island area now and we have been hooking fish from 30 lbs. up to 100 lbs on most trips that attempt to get a hookup. There are still fish in the shallow inside bays as well as some migrating pod just off he beach. We have success with cut baits on the inside and sight casting to pods on the outside as well as drifting live baits in their travel lanes. By yesterday, the water near the beach had turned very clear, making the northbound schools easy to see. Donna Whitaker did battle her first tarpon, a 100 lb. class fish yesterday.

Shark action has been very reliable with bull, lemon and blacktip sharks all over the backcountry bays. They always provide hard fighting action anytime. Todd Whitaker boated a big blacktip yesterday that probably weighed in over 80 lbs.

More and more of the snook are moving out towards the passes and beaches now. They are still scattered around the inside islands and bay, but not quite as concentrated as a couple weeks ago. While we did not have very many large fish caught this week, some trips released as many as 25 fish with a couple fish going 30 inches.

I fished with Redsnook tournament director Wayne Meland and Dave Rowe last week and the two boated and released countless snook. We started on the beach and worked our way inland into some of the most remote creeks catching fish after fish all morning.

Bob and Rick Messey had the same results with the snook, but also mixed in a few slot redfish and seatrout.

I am looking forward to another busy week sharing our great spring fishing!

FLORIDA: Warm Weather Equals Snook and Tarpon Madness

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011

The inshore fishing for snook and tarpon has not changed much, early morning and late afternoon the bite turns on. Live bait’s and artificial lures work great near shorelines and seawalls. The tarpon can be seen rolling on the surface be sure to stay quite and get in front of the fish for best results. Snook can be found basking in the sun ambushing baits as the current sweeps them through the area.

The seawalls and docks are full of sheepshead, willing to take live shrimp or fiddler crabs. The sheepshead are not really sought after that much, but not only do they taste great, they put on a great battle with light tackle. Sight fishing for these zebra looking fish can be a blast, most certainly with kids and novice anglers aboard.

Jacks and bluefish are also around and on the prowl, these feisty fish might not be highly prized, but they put up a great fight. The grass flats are still teaming with ladyfish, pompano, snapper and drum. Bucktail jigs tipped with shrimp will get your rod bent. The key is to locate bait schools and stay in depths from 2 to 6 feet.

Well that is the fishing report for the past week hope you all enjoyed.

FLORIDA: Solid Snook Day On Tampa Bay

Thursday, November 11th, 2010

Friday’s NW winds were brutal and kept most anglers at home. Captain Steven targeted an area protected from the winds and was amazed by what I found. First let me give Maui Jim sunglasses Kudos’. Friday was my first day wearing my new Maui Jim prescription sunglasses. I picked the new Maui Jim Evolution digital lens on the Volcano frame. The lens are nothing short of amazing, these lens pop with clarity and have awesome water penetration capabilities. Regardless of brand quality eyewear is a must to protect your eyes.

One stop and it was game on. I found the snook, redfish and sheepshead mother load. I was shocked at the sight as bait after bait was inhaled. The large school never moved more than 100′ and continued to feed heavily.

This all started with me spotting one snook and honestly I may not have stopped had I missed that snook. Its was clear these fish were chasing baits pushed by the winds into a mangrove island corner, there also is a small channel that runs through this area.

There are snook from low 20″s to upper 30″s

The sheepshead were all nice ranging from 3-5 pounds. It was great finding so many snook in one location after last years freeze. This was by far the best I have seen all year. Leave the snook in the water and unhook it there or be sure to support the snook from underneath while taking a quick photo.

FLORIDA: Different fish bring new action to Tampa Bay!

Saturday, November 6th, 2010

Fall? Summer? Fall? Summer?

It is indeed fall, but the weather sure makes it feel like it is still summertime; it is downright hot! Despite the fact that the fish are on the move lately, fishing has been really good. Because the fish are moving around a lot, it has been taking a bit more time to find the bite.

It’s great to be catching snook. Lately, we’ve caught some great sized fish and great numbers of them. Even though snook are out of season, it is still fun to catch them and release them. The snook bite should keep getting better as the water temperature drops. We managed to catch the biggest snook of two tournaments last week, which is great because 30 inch snook are hard to come by these days.

The redfish bite is pretty awesome! Occasionally, we’ve had to do a little more boat riding than I like to do to locate a big school of fish. Once we found the fish, we quickly realized the ride was well worth it. We have been catching many fish that are over the slot limit. On certain days, we’ve had to work really hard to catch keeper-sized fish, and others all we catch are slot-sized fish. Either way, we’ve managed to catch a few fish to take home every trip.

We have been changing it up a bit by starting our mornings off by fishing off the beach for mackerel, cobia, and king fish, and it has produced some great action. Mixed in with the mackerel, cobia, and king fish, there have been some big sharks. Get a 5 foot to 7 foot black tip shark on the other end of your rod and you are in for a great fight.

Tarpon are still in Tampa Bay. We’ve caught many great sized fish lately. Last week, we jumped not only some 100 pound fish, but also some 150 pound fish.

FLORIDA: Biscayne Bay Miami Flats Fishing October

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

Fall is always a slow time of the year for me. Not many people from up north down for vacation and I tend to take a little time off for myself. It’s this time of the year that makes me realize just how important it is to be on the water everyday to keep up with what is going on. The fish are there and I have been in them, but not to the extent I am from January to August.

I had Rich Schuster and friend AJ out for some bonefish chasing and tarpon hunting. We wound up with a pair of little guys and broke off a one that looked like a 10+ lber to me. We also went 1 for 3 on baby tarpon and missed 2 snook.

Gene Conroy and his wife Linda joined me for a day. We caught a bonefish and one baby tarpon.

This past Saturday was the Bonefish Tarpon Trust and Univ. of Miami annual bonefish census. I had Mike Larkin, biologist for UM, out for the day. The bonefish were scarce and we only managed to get this one 3 lber. I really enjoyed the day with Mike though. As you can imagine he is very knowledgeable about bonefish. As always I learn something new about bonefish and there behavior.

Biscayne Bay Fishing Forecast:
November starts the beginning of the winter pattern of fishing for me. The big tarpon are making a show and the bonefish will be doing their thing. Permit fishing will get a little tougher but there will be some nice fish around.

Target Species:
Bonefish, permit, tarpon, snook, sharks.
