FLORIDA: Redfish – Shrimp, Shiners & Cut Bait has been working

Tuesday, August 14th, 2012

Redfish

Has been on fire when you get the right tide. A few going over the 30″ range. I’ve been doing best on any tide that has good current. Shrimp, shiners & cut bait has been working for me. The schools can be from ten to fifty. Fishing reds on the flats can be a casters’ dream.

On the lower tides, they become very visible with their tails sticking up in the air. Fishing for tailing reds is great fun! The trick is being there when they are feeding. Try working the edges of the sand bars and oyster reefs.

Some people call it fishing for reds, I call it hunting. When poling the flats for reds, move very slowly and watch for wakes, tails and boils. When fishing the mangroves, fish the top end of the high tide and get your fly, bait or jig underneath the mangroves as far as you can. This technique will also produce a few snook. A great way to cover a lot of water and it can be very productive. Flies, artificials and bait all are working well for these beautiful strong fighters. Try bait fishing them with pinfish, shrimp or cut bait. Flyfish them against the mangroves and on the flats with a earth tone colored clouser and for some real excitement try top water on the overcast days. Average size about 18″ to 30″ with some larger ones around. Watch for those TAILS!!!

Tarpon

We’ve been doing well on the beaches and in the Sound. Summer time is tarpon time! So now is the time to book your tarpon trip. We do best with live baits, but the fly and cut baits will work as well.. These critters will range from 40 lbs. to 200 lbs. with the average being around 100 lbs. The Silver King is a fish of a life time, very strong fighters and jumps that will out do any marlin. Either bait or fly, you owe it to yourself to fish for this species.

Snook

Are very active with the water temperature in the 80’s and bait almost everywhere. They can be found near mouths of creeks, passes, canals, pot holes and points. White bait, shrimp, cut ladyfish, flies and jigs all will work. Fish them on a tide with good current, I prefer an outgoing tide.

A well placed shiner or fly will result in a violent fight that you’ll remember for a lifetime.

Spotted Sea Trout

You can almost catch one on every cast if you find that perfect sand hole, creek or grass flats. I can’t remember when we have caught more large trout than this year. Summer time produces even larger trout. Fun on light tackle or fly this fish is aggressive. I’ve been fishing them in 3′ to 5′ of water over grass flats or sand holes.

Jacks, mackeral, pompano, cobia, grouper, sharks and more! These fish and others are common on the flats and backcountry. When encountered thay all are a lot of fun with tackle or on the fly.

S CAROLINA: Redfish are still biting well on Shrimp, Mullet or Mud Minnows

Monday, August 6th, 2012

The fishing in the Beaufort area continues to be hot. Almost as hot as the daily high temperatures. Most trips are being conducted in the early morning, as the winds are down and the temps at least moderate.

Sea Trout are starting to show everywhere as our shrimp crop grows, along with our finger mullet populations. Most are still under the 14 inch minimum, but should be in the keeper range by later this fall. I’m looking for a banner trout year.

Redfish are still biting well on shrimp, mullet or mud minnows, and a variety of artificials. The nearshore wrecks are producing well, with Weakfish, Spadefish, Blues, Ladyfish, and Jack Crevalle the main targets.

The big Jacks are also being taken in Calibogue Sound right now.A friend reported a school of a thousand fish seen there last week, and he took a 48 inch Jack. What a fight that was.

Tarpon continue to be a main target for charter guides in our area.

FLORIDA: Using Shrimp We Caught & Released Keeper–Sized Redfish

Monday, November 14th, 2011

Winds have been blowing hard and seas have been rough for a while. Those conditions tend to curtail offshore fishing. But on Wednesday, 10/26/11, I had a group of guys who wanted to fish the bay. We timed our trip to coincide with the best tide conditions, and it paid off. Don Kalmey, Karl Russ, Terry Thomas and Kent Gregory caught seven redfish, five of them keepers at 19 to 21 inches. The group also caught ten sheepshead, two of which were keepers at 14 inches. They also released ladyfish, puffer fish and crevalle jacks. All were caught on shrimp, fishing around the islands in Estero Bay.

We had high winds and rain again for part of this week, but I did get out fishing in the backwaters on Friday, 11/4/11, on a catch-and-release trip with Rod Knudson and Dave Mercer. we had a great morning of fishing, just ahead of a windy, cool front moving through the area. We caught eight redfish, six of them keeper-size, though we released all. We also released fifteen sheepshead to 16 inches and two stingrays. We used live shrimp for all, fishing the islands of Estero Bay.

Monday morning, 11/7, I fished with long-time customers Steve Spitzer and Jalissa Reever. With four-to-six foot seas offshore, we scrapped our gulf plans and decided to fish Estero Bay instead. We did well with redfish on shrimp, catching eight of those, five of which were keepers to 20 inches. We also caught nine sheepshead, including five keepers to 14 inches. We released a 16-inch black drum.

Wednesday morning, 11/9, I had a short morning of fishing Estero Bay with Paul Oleff, who had to be back in time for an appointment. But the abbreviated time out there didn’t stop us from catching eight redfish, five of which were keepers at 19 1/2 inches each. We also caught five keeper sheepshead to 15 inches, all on shrimp.

Friday morning, 11/11, I fished a catch-and-release trip in Estero Bay with Terry Lischer, her adult son, Mike Lischer, Jeff Heinrich, and Jeff’s 4 ½ year-old daughter, Maddie. A brisk northwest wind of about 25 knots blew all morning, so we fished the spots that we could stay best sheltered from the wind. Using shrimp, we caught and released a keeper–sized redfish, along with several sheepshead, some small mangrove snapper, and four stingrays.

N CAROLINA: Flounder & Redfish – Live Mullet and Shrimp Work Well

Monday, October 24th, 2011

Speckled trout fishing continues to improve.

Fish up to six pounds have been reported from Carolina Beach all the way to Topsail. Most fish seem top be in the two to two and half pound size though. Best lure choices have been Mirrolures, Doa shad tails, Rapala X-Rap jerk baits in size ten and Betts Halo shrimp.

Falling tide seems to be the best time to fish.

Flounder fishing is good along with redfish. Live mullet and shrimp work well along with Berkley Gulp. Blues have thinned out a bit but are still around.

Spots continue to be caught in the waterway and surf.

TEXAS: Sabine Lake Fishing is great.

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

We are fishing mid lake to the north end and to east pass. Also the ICW fishing over shell flats working 2ft to 4ft water, keying on birds.

Also working early morning speckled trout to 5 lbs and fishing open water with nice red fish mixed in this pattern. This has been working well, tides have been coming in early morning and the mid day bite has been on the shoreline. Keying on shrimp/mullet fishing slow and finding bait boxing, good numbers of speckled trout on outgoing tides.

Also the flounder fishing has picked up with the high tides, fishing the points and drops 2 to 4 ft water, and working the mouths of bayous. My best flounder bite is on out going tides and fishing grass points with the light north winds this month.

Sabine pass jetties have started to hold nice speckled trout red fish in the early morning.

Beach Front fishing has picked up with nice speckled trout showing in the early morning bite. Sabine pass channel is holding nice flounder fishing at 2ft to 6ft water, off points and drops, keying on bait on shell flats with red fish mixed in.

My Best Baits are Stunt Grunt, Browns, Devils Eye, Down South Lures, Fishbites, and Shrimp tipping with each bait best fishing Red fish/Flounder. Also using Xtreme Scent 5″ jerk Baits and Sonar Shad B Dogs Spoons for Fishing the birds.

Good Fishing.

N. CAROLINA: Spanish Mackerel Invasion

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

Fishing has flat out turned on. We can talk about the spanish bite, or we could talk about the drum bite, but the bottom line is if you like fishing inshore or near shore, it is happening now.

Now here’s my report:

Inshore: Water temps have climbed above 70 and the fishing is great. Fresh shrimp will not get the job done anymore, because our pesky friends the pinfish have finally arrived. Shrimp is still good bait, but it is too easily “stolen” by the pinfish. So to catch drum or flounder it is now best to use either live bait such as mud minnows or small menhaden or fresh cut bait such as bluefish which are plentiful around the inlets. Catch a bunch of blues, filet them, salt them down good and put in the freezer. The salt keeps them from freezing, but also keeps them fresh. Some flounder are biting around the inlets and in the river.

Near Shore: The big action would be the spanish mackerel. Catch them casting small spoons or jigs. Catch them trolling Yozuri Deep Divers with lite spinning tackle. Or catch them trolling clarkspoons and bird rigs. Small to nice size bluefish are mixed in with them. Large schools of menhaden have shown up and some cobia have been hanging with them.

Upcoming: Inshore, river and near shore fishing is busting loose. Look for more of the same in the coming weeks plus a growing presence of flounder. And just a thought, let’s not forget about the fishing enthusiasts and those that make their living fishing on the Gulf Coast. A tragedy beyond comprehension is in the making and let’s pray that the people responsible come forward with a viable solution fast.
On another note, my old phone number will be terminated later this month and the number below is the only way other than email that you will be able to reach me, so you might want to make a note of it.
