FLORIDA: Sheepshead & Jacks Crevall

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012

Over the past few days I’ve been out with some great clients and they’ve been bowing up on a variety of fish including Sheepshead, Redfish, and Jack Crevall. Spring break is coming to a close, and with it goes the sheepshead bite.

It’s been a great 5 weeks, and I have to say it’s been one of the best Spring Break fishing seasons in a long time, with exceptional fishing as well as some great clients.

Every year I look forward to Sheepshead season for many reasons, with a couple of them being they are great eating and are much fun to catch on light tackle. Sheepshead are great for kids and families who just want to go out and have a great inshore fishing adventure.

Even when the sheepshead bite turns off, there will still be a wide variety of fish to target for more fishing adventures.

The kids are back in school now and spring break is over, but the fishing just keeps heating up.

Till the next adventure.

FLORIDA: Tampa Bay – Monster Sheepshead, Redfish, Trout Fishing

Saturday, February 5th, 2011

Captain Steven welcomed his anglers at O’Neill’s Marina and immediately knew it would be a fun day. We then made the 15 mile run across a very smooth Tampa Bay to the Little Manatee river.

We were greeted with Dolphins and Manatees upon arrival. Armed with 25 dozen live shrimp we began casting up current and bounced them along the bottom. It didn’t take long before the first redfish was landed. The action was not the non stop action of the last few weeks but steady with spunky 15-18″ reds.

Terry’s rod bent deeply looking like a nice red but it turned out to be a 7 pound sheepshead. At 7 pounds a true trophy, Terry then nailed another that was pushing 7 pounds. Within 15 minutes Terry once again was fast to another solid fish. I was positive it was a redfish then my jaw dropped to see a monster sheepshead that had to be 10 pounds! I had my Boca ready only to have the giant come unbuttoned boat side.

We then ran to a local canal with the first cast all hooking small sea trout. The bow of the boat was red hot with trout after trout landed while the guys on the stern saw much slower action. Of course the guys up front got very vocal teasing the guys in the back. Nice day great guys it doesn’t get any better.

FLORIDA: Trout, Sheepshead, Redfish… Estero Bay Is Producing Fish

Monday, January 24th, 2011

The cold fronts keep on coming but the weather is a whole lot better here in southwest Florida than it is in the middle to northeast U.S. The water temperatures dropped over the weekend to the low 60’s but that didn’t change things much in Estero Bay. Trout, sheepshead and redfish have been cooperating along with good size ladyfish and jacks. You can’t eat the ladies and jacks but they sure are fun to catch!

Spent the last several days using live shrimp under popping corks and working pot holes and cuts on the low tides. When the water comes up and warms up, later in the day, we’ve been moving to the back of the Bay to fish the mangrove. It’s hard to find a slot redfish right now but there sure are a bunch of “rats” around.

The keeper to undersize ratio changed on the trout. We’re getting about 1 keeper to 5 releases. Seems the smaller fish are hungrier right now. Live shrimp has been the ticket but Gulp Shrimp and Redfish Magic artificials are doing well after the sun warms the water a bit.

Sheepshead has been the dinner ticket. The big ones (3 to 4 pounds) have made their winter move to the mangrove cuts and oyster bars. They’ll readily take small offerings of shrimp on 1/8 oz. jigs or on small hooks with a split shot weight to keep it on the bottom. Set the hook just as soon as you feel the bite. They are great bait stealers and your hesitation is in their favor.

FLORIDA: Holiday Fishing Cranks Up as Cold Fronts Push Through

Anna Maria December Fishing Report

The weather might be kind of cool, but that’s not the case when it comes to the fishing here off the Island of Anna Maria. I always enjoy this time of year and fishing around the first few cold fronts because it always makes for great fishing. A lot of people think the cold days are not as good as the warmer ones in the winter, but that simply couldn’t be any farther from the truth. I personally prefer the cooler days in the winter. Yes some of the more tropical species metabolism, like Snook, slows down and they don’t eat as much, but many of the other fish like Redfish, Trout, Black Drum, Flounder, and Sheepshead, the cold water in the 50s has little effect on whether or not they are hungry. So when it gets cold these guys are still hungry. The plus is the colder it gets the more and tighter the fish school up, and then compound that with low winter tides equals some really large schools of fish all piled up in the same hole. Of course with this many fish all in one spot it can make for some very fast easy fishing.

This past week has been one of those weeks so far. Cold water temps, but good fishing. Yesterday we landed 64 Redfish along with Trout, Black Drum, Flounder and Sheepshead. We have been catching at least 25 Reds a day, lot of smaller ones, but some nice keepers too.

Red fishing is good and should be good though the winter. The Black Drum fishing is good and should get even better as the water cools more.
There is some nice Sheepshead around and the larger ones should move in and continue to get stronger till February. Believe me a 6 or 7 pound Sheepshead is a lot of fun on light tackle and are really good to eat.

Trout fishing is good though they are catch and release till the season reopens Jan 1st. There is also some nice Flounder mixed in with our catch and that should remain the same throughout the winter months.

Pompano fishing is fair at the moment, I have not been targeting them myself, but if it picks up a little more as we get into our winter months I look forward to catching them. They are an awesome target when the action is fast.

I had been catching a lot of Grouper before the last cold snap in close in the bay. I have not targeted them since because the backwater fishing has been so good. Maybe I will give them a try this week if I find a lull in the fishing at some point.

Well that’s my report and it’s a great time to be on the water if you like a lot of action.

Good luck on the water and happy holidays.

MISSISSIPPI: Light tackle Fishing, Reds, Sheepshead, Black drum

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

That darn o’l WHIPASNAPA CHARTER BOAT has taken a large variety of guest (friends) on some great light tackle trips last few days. Guest have come from, Illinois, Ohio, S. Carolina, Louisiana, and others. Have consisted of doctors, lawyers, pilots, chemist, computer techs, engineers and many others. And we have caught just about everything that swims, mostly black drum, strong sheepshead bite also, trout and ground mullet, reds just to name a few. Three very good trips!!

As everyone knows it takes good karma and a few other things to make a trip a lil more memorable. And on these 3 everything just seem to click.. We were fishing just fresh dead (SHRIMP) and a few on live shrimp and minnows (peter mullet and small croaker), slow dragging across the bottom in numerous spots along the BILOXI Back Bay Biloxi! Lots of hard fighting drag ripping make ya slap your grand maw runs, lead to some great excitement.
Mostly catch and release, but the avg. were 6-12 sheepshead 3-6lb, 15-25 black drum 4-8lb, couple flounder, reds, specks, (white trout and ground mullet) were thick but we were looking for lil more fight.

I, CAPTAIN; Robert “Earl” McDaniel, would like to thank everyone that trust in the WHIPASNAPA CHARTER BOAT AND IT’S CAPTAIN for there outings into the Gulf of Mexico. It is an honor and a blessing to be able to take so many great people on these great boating adventures.
Thanks everyone for helping out and being patient with fish and capt. sometimes it was a very trying year with the spill and all but hey, soon as we got waters opened back up. Folks jumped right back on and the fishing this year has really been extraordinary!!! So have our guest!! And I believe we gona come out pretty good considering. Right now from my eyes it looks -good-great! Fish, water and all looks very good. So look forward to seeing each of our friends with some of their friends back for more WHIPASNAPA adventures next year!!

Have a great Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas and a very blessed and Happy New Year!!!!
