MISSISSIPPI: Dark Colored Plastics have Worked Well

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

Bass fishing continues to be good.  Dark colored plastics have worked well, such as a black or purple worms with a charteuse tail.  White spinner baits also do well here, especially on cloudy days.

Bream are still biting good.  Crickets and redworms are always good choices from the day use area.

Catfish usually do well along the creek channel with liver and worms.  They should be doing well with the rain we’ve had lately.

Over 20 new fish attractor sites were created during January 2011. Many of these sites were marked with GPS and the coordinates are listed below. The lake depth map has been updated showing these locations. The additional habitat should provide structure for various fish species and offer hot spots for anglers to try. Good luck!

MISSISSIPPI: 1oz Bucktail Jig with Four Inch Curly Tail Trailer

Tuesday, July 19th, 2011

Tonight I had a mother and daughter combo interested in reeling in some stripers. So we meet at Ryan Creek Marina alittle before 6:00pm. With four hours to fish, we headed out in search of some stripers.

They told me their only fishing experience was deep sea fishing last summer. Our first spot was about 1/4 mile from big bridge. We started out long lining 1oz. bucktail jig and it didn’t take long for things to pick up. On our first pass they doubled up. As the two worked their fish back to the boat, I grabed the net. Once we had both fish aboard, it was time for a picture with their fish. When I ask them to hold the fish. They said almost together, why don’t you hold the fish and will take the picture. So I hold the fish and they took the picture. This theme continued throughout the trip.

They reeled them in and I held them up. We caught fish in that one area from 6:03pm to 8:20pm. Once that ended we cranked up the engine and headed for a couple of lights. We ended up catching two more off the lights. Our biggest fish was only 11 pounds, but we caught plenty of them. Lots of numbers today, but none with any size. The girls seemed to have a blast though. Guess that’s all that matters. One of the funnest four hour trips in a long time.

I have been fishing from big bridge to the dam. I have found plenty of fish within a mile of big bridge. Caught most of our fish at 30 feet tonight. All but two of our fish more and 1oz bucktail jig with four inch curly tail trailer. The top two colors to tonight were white and white/chartues.

MISSISSIPPI: Live Red Worms and Crickets are Doing Well Around the Banks

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011

Bream are still biting.  Mr. William “Stoggie” Bennett from Lawrence County recently caught a nice mess of bluegill.  Grab some crickets and go fishing!

Water temperature: 88 F  Visibility:  28 inches

Bream fishing continues to improve.  Live red worms and crickets are doing well around the banks and brush in 3’to5′ water, mainly during the afternoon .

Bass fishing has been best during the afternoons.  Dark colored spinner baits have been best.  Feel free to take a mess of small bass home with you!

Target the brush piles for crappie that are in deeper areas of the lake and also along the creek channel.  Live minnows are recommended.

Catfish have been caught during the day; however the bite has been best at night.  Try worms and crickets.

MISSISSIPPI: We got 80 White,15 Speckled Trout and 3 Redfish!

Wednesday, June 8th, 2011

The Mega Bite was on today with a total of 98 fish. We got 80 White,15 Speckled Trout and 3 Redfish!

All the way from Texas to fish in Biloxi were Jamie, Hank, Blake and Cutter. The stars of the day were the young boys Blake age 14 and Cutter age 7. Blake put this 32” Bull Redfish in the boat without any help. Cutter got more than his share of big Speckled Trout and White Trout. This 7 year old fished like a pro he was awesome! After Blake saw his Brother catching so many fish it was time for me to make an adjustment to Blake’s line. Blake was now hauling them in like a pro!

Jamie and Hank got their share of some nice fish.

MISSISSIPPI: Crappie – Catching in Deeper Water, Around Brushtops on Minnows & Jigs

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

Water temps are running in the low 70’s.

The bream report is good with a lot of bream bedding right now in 3-8ft of water. Most anglers are tight-lining crickets and redworms, and a few are being caught on jigs. The bass reports have been fair to good. Most anglers are hitting shallow grassy areas, as well as points and the creek channel. Texas-rigged plastics, crankbaits, and spinnerbaits have all been catching fish.

Look to catch a few bass holding around bream beds as well. We’re hearing more reports of bass anglers harvesting some fish, which should be a tremendous help to the population if it continues.

The crappie bite is fair with a few anglers catching them in deeper water around brushtops on both minnows and jigs.

MISSISSIPPI: Alicevile Lake – Grass Beds Holding Good Numbers of Bass

Wednesday, May 25th, 2011

The bass reports were fair to good this past week, with most coming from the Coalfire creek and Camp Pratt areas.

Scattered grass beds are holding good numbers of bass with the best baits being frogs and buzzbaits early with flukes and spinnerbaits after the morning bite slows. The crappie are in a post spawn pattern now and the best areas continue to be Pumpkin Creek and the old river run at Camp Pratt. Crappie jigs are working better than minnows. Best water depths are 4 to 8 feet around stumps and vegetation. The catfish reports are fair to good. Most successful anglers are hitting the old river runs and navigation channel with trotlines and jugs. Cutbait and nightcrawlers have been the best bait.

Look for the bite to continue to improve as we get closer to the catfish spawning season.

MISSISSIPPI: Redworms and Crickets are Good Bait Choices

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

Water temperature: 68 F    Visibility: Clear

Bass fishing is still fair despite the weather changes.  Target the pads and the grass along the upper end of the lake.  Top water and soft plastics baits have been best.

Bream fishing should pick up soon with the full moon coming.  Redworms and crickets are good bait choices and look for bream to be near the bank.

The crappie spawn is over and fish have moved out to deeper areas.  Target treetops that are in 6-12 ft of water with jigs.  You can also catch crappie by trolling along the creek channel and fishing 11-12 ft deep.

Catfish can be caught using chicken liver and worms.  Try tight-linning in 6-8 ft depths.  They should be moving into shallow areas this month and June.

MISSISSIPPI: Target Pads & Vegetation During Early Morning

Friday, May 20th, 2011

Bass anglers are having luck fishing at the upper end of the lake.  Target pads and other vegetation during early morning or late afternoon hours for the best bite.  Soft plastics, buzz baits, and frogs have worked well.

Bream fishing should pick up soon with the full moon coming.  Redworms and crickets are good bait choices and look for bream to be near the bank.

The crappie spawn is over and fish have moved out to deeper areas.  Target treetops that are in 6-8 ft of water with jigs.  You can also catch crappie by trolling along the creek channel and fishing 11-12 ft deep.

MISSISSIPPI: Lake Mary Crawford – Bass Can Be Found Around Brush

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

Bass can be found around brush in 3-6 ft depths.  Soft plastics in junebug, chartruese, and pumkinseed colors have been best.  Feel free to take a mess of small bass home with you!

Bream fishing is picking up.  Try worms or crickets in 3-5 ft depths along the bank and around brush.

Crappie fishing has been slow.  Try fishing around brush in 4-8 ft water and along the creek channel.

Catfish are being caught, but sizes have been small.  Tight-lining with worms, liver, or shrimp should do well for catfish.  Late afternoon has been the best time for catching them.

Over 10 new fish attractor sites were created during January 2011. Several of these sites were marked with GPS and the coordinates are listed below. The lake depth map has been updated showing many of these locations. The additional habitat should provide structure for various fish species and offer hot spots for anglers to try.

Good luck!
