MISSISSIPPI: Chotard & Albermarle – Try Soft Plastics & Spinnerbaits Around Edges of Trees

Monday, November 7th, 2011

Fishing on Chotard and Albermarle is always dependent upon the MS River level and movement.  As the water slowly leaks out of the oxbows and back into the River, fishing is great!  For best results on these lakes, always check the MS River report to know if the river is moving in or out of the lake and target areas of moving water for improved fishing. Today, the river is at 12ft and slowly rising.

Bass fishing has been great during the past few weeks.  The cold front could slow down the bite, but it should pick back up later in the week.  The trees along the bank across from Laney’s should be holding fish.  Try soft plastics and spinnerbaits around the edges of the trees.  The points along Chotard are producing good-sized fish.  Try texas-rigging a plastic worm when fishing the points.

Crappie fishing has also been great lately.  However, crappie are often very finicky about pressure changes, so they may slow down for a few days as well.  These lakes are known to have big crappie and a lot of them.  Try using minnows or jigs around the willow trees.  If you cannot find them there, try some of the deeper treetops along the lake.  Also, slow-trolling open waters along the bank can be a very effective method on these lakes.

Bream fishing is great right now as well.  Try using crickets or redworms around treetops in deep water.  There have been reports of fishermen filling their coolers with nice size fish.

Catfishing is always good on the lakes.  As an oxbow of the MS River, catfish will always be a good option.  Try tightlining in deep water with chicken liver, cutbait, or nightcrawlers.

MISSISSIPPI: Lake Mike Conner – Crappie Can be Found Holding Near Structure, Jigs & Minnows Work Well

Monday, October 24th, 2011

Bass fishing has been good.  Most fish caught have been fairly small, but some in the 2 lb range were taken.  Please feel free to take a mess of small bass home with you!

Crappie can be found holding near structure in deeper areas of the lake.  Jigs and minnows work well.

Bream anglers have done well using worms, crickets, and tube jigs.

Catfish fishing has been great!  Fish are biting best at night.  Worms, chicken liver, and shiners have been good baits to use.  The hot spot has been between the boat ramp and the dam.

MISSISSIPPI: Fishing the Lower River & Marsh Catching Bass Using Soft Plastics

Monday, October 17th, 2011

Bass fishermen still fish the river & oxbows catching bass around woody cover in the main channel as well as the oxbows using soft plastics and spinnerbaits. Anglers fishing the lower river & marsh continue to report catching a few bass using soft plastics, especially on a falling tide.

Several reports came in of anglers catching flathead catfish in the 20 to 40-lb. range in the mid-river areas near Smith’s Fish Camp using live bait.

The bream are still being caught using crickets in the oxbows & main channel near woody cover. Some anglers continue to report decent catches of redear (shellcracker) in the lower river oxbows and main channel south of the forks as well as in the marsh using redworms in 4 to 8 ft. of water. Some of the better catches reportedly coming from the edges of the main river channel & along the edges of the larger bayous in the marsh near I-10 using redworms.

A few new crappie reports came in from the oxbows where some anglers are trolling mid-lake using small crankbaits or jigs to catch fish in the 1 to 1.5-lb. range.

MISSISSIPPI: Lake Mary Crawford – Bass are Being Caught on Spinner baits and Plastic Worms

Monday, October 3rd, 2011

Bream fishing has been fair this week with most fish being caught withn crickets in 4-6 ft of water.  Fishing near brush or other structure is recommended.

Bass are being caught on spinner baits and plastic worms.  The best fishing has been in 4-6 ft depths and using spinnerbaits, crank baits, and soft plastics.  Feel free to take a mess of small bass home with you.

Crappie are being caught in 3-7 ft depths with minnows.  Target some of the brush tops listed below or around the fishing piers.

Over 10 new fish attractor sites were created during January 2011. Several of these sites were marked with GPS and the coordinates are listed below. The lake depth map has been updated showing many of these locations. The additional habitat should provide structure for various fish species and offer hot spots for anglers to try. Good luck!

MISSISSIPPI: Live Shrimp and Some Fresh Dead were Baits of Choice

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

The WhipaSnapa Charter Boat, down here in Biloxi, Ms., welcomes those great lil signs of fall air.

Mr. Will Lambert and Co-Workers (friends), boarded the WhipaSnapa for well, just wanting to go on a boat. We all know, that’s always a good thing. But they didn’t mind if they caught a few fish while out (on a boat). The after lunch trip crew ate a lil, drank a lil and kept there stings tight which lead to some pretty good action on sheepshead, drum (red and back), piles of reds. But most of them were just undersized. Still a hoot to have on the end of the ol light tackle spin cast. Since the trips were catch an release, even better. A couple flounders and some nice trout fell victim to the quite pleasurable crew. For the most part, a few live shrimp, an some fresh dead, were baits of choice laid relaxed on the bottom.

Gotin 1 those Horn Island camping excursions also, getting that time of year were camping is very nice. And OMG! Horn Island might be one of the greatest places for some that good ol’ R&R. Think everyone should try this very tranquil setting at least once. And probably once a month could be very therapeutic. WOW! From sunrise to sunset the beauty in between is just amazing. Just set an soak it up!! Walk an soak it up, an sit again!! An of course dipping a soft plastic across the many grass beds for some reds an trout, would surely prove exciting as well..

Mr. David and Lisa from Texas, jumped aboard that WhipaSnapa for lil early morning adventure. As I dropped the anchor 1st we just sat an soaked it all up. I mean I see it daily but sometimes it’s still just nice to sit an appreciate the many blessing from Mother Nature we are rewarded with daily.. But we eventually commenced to working on some of those big o’l fall White Trout . Yes! the fall trout generally run a bit bigger than the spring. The feisty lil fighters have been thick and hungry. Pretty much unlimited, just sit and reel’em in till you get all you want. White Trout are quiet the pleasure to reel in and very tasty at the table also. David and Taylor also enjoyed a few hour light tackle excursion with many fish being lifted aboard the Whipasnapa. Look at all the smiles!!!!

Anyway thanks so much everyone for sharing your South Mississippi adventures with us!!! LOVE IT!

Do have a couple more those offshore adventures that need a person or 2 so holla and get on a boat!!! Starting to get into the off season as well so catch us during the week an we will make the price right.. You wont regret it!!

MISSISSIPPI: Outskirts (of the Bays) Strong on Drum, Trout & Flounder

Tuesday, September 6th, 2011

Fish don’t bite to good at the house.

Man, that WhipaSnapa Charter Boat, out of Biloxi, Ms., bout to go into boating withdrawals!! Them winds been keeping us home for 2 weeks now. Last weekend did get out to the rigs one day out of 3. Sunday Mr. Brad Trussell an crew had a quite breezy start. With north wind to our back it was a decent ride out. And the winds laid just in time for the ride in. We did fairly well on some nice amberjacks, currents finally slacked up. But the water clarity is even worse. I don’t know, but we managed a limit on the amberjack. Some real nice white trout, a few other string pullers and a couple huge 200lb bull sharks. WOW!!!

But ol Tropical Storm Lee has really put a damper on things this week/weekend, what some rain! and howling winds increasing the seas to 15ft or so. That’s not good on the pocket book cause just can’t seem to stay out them boating supply stores, but when this weather breaks we got some new fishing weapons to try out. :-}

Don’t forget the Grouper Season coming up and the return of the fall Cobia run. Amberjack should stay strong and hopefully the mangrove will come back and play some more. (Not sure what’s happened to them) just don’t know, not even seeing them, like they just vanished. The reds, sharks, trouts and others should stay strong and actually increase out around the Islands.

Bay probably going to get flushed out (with the rain) but the outskirts (of the Bays) should be strong on drum, trout and flounder among others.
So come on down and see what you can catch!! Oh and another thing—-

Whatever you care to pursue, Smiles await you aboard the WhipaSnapa Charter Boat!!!

Good luck and God Bless All!

Thursday, August 18th, 2011

Bass anglers still report the bite is good early & late in the day using mainly soft plastics either Texas or Carolina-rigged and fished along main lake points in 5 to 10 ft. of water.

Try either Junebug colors or green pumpkinseed.

Some bass are still being caught early & late with spinnerbaits and topwater lures near the dam or near brushtops. Bream anglers report the bite has picked up some with the full moon with fish being caught using crickets in 4 to 8 ft. of water around brushtops. NOTE: The new boat ramp & courtesy pier are in place at Lake Walthall!

Remember: largemouth bass limit is 10/person bream (bluegill, redear) limit is 100/person catfish is 10/person.

MISSISSIPPI: Stinking Big o’l Red Snapper Kept Eating Everything

Tuesday, August 9th, 2011

The Biloxi, Ms. Charter Boat WhipaSnapa running a lot of great times on a boat. The Hester’s did the lil eve sunset cruise. Which was a very nice relaxing an beautiful lil cruise. Really just nice to go take a boat ride sometimes an soak up a great sunset, the shoreline and coastal views along our Biloxi Ms. Shore..

Mr. Kevin Thompson an Working partners from NW. Louisiana were in Monday for the 6hr. combo shark an light tackle. Boy; steady shark, drum, an trout action for the guys all 6hrs. reely but some fish in the box an released several also… The Viator’s did a lil morning light tackle trip that started out a lil slow but finished strong. Talked to my crabber buddy and said all his crabs had died that day in the particular we were fishing. Think that explained the no bites in that area. But we moved up the bay and found some really nice trout that pulled the guys string for some great excitement the last couple hours. They were really catching on an were reeling them in 2 at the time…

The Carl Legett Tournament which is to me the best tournament we have! I really enjoy this 3 day fishing challenge. Probably one of the 3 slowest days I can remember, well not slow catching just catching the ones to bring home was slow! Them stinking big o’l Red Snapper kept eating everything that hit the water. Made trying to catch anything else a lil challenging. Oh an the currents offshore was ripping, I mean ripping!!, bout 4 mph or so.

An for the most part, mangroves are a lil more shy when approaching a bait and when the current is ripping the mangroves have to get away from the rig and the Red Snapper wind up with most of baits. O an Speaking of Baits lord help me with the lil fellow that STOLE my 200 croakers an sold them… We did manage a few mangroves and for the most part they were all big nice Mangroves. In all we finished with was a 3rd place Mangrove. Held 1st, 2nd, and 3rd for 2 days on Mangroves till bout hour before scales closed. And held 2nd and 3rd on amberjack But failed to finish with a spot. So a few daily prizes with a 53lb amberjack and a 11lb mangrove being our biggest. We lost several huge amberjack and mangrove to the rigs. But its just amazing how fast them fish can get to that rig for freedom.

THANKS EVERYONE AN MAY GOD BLESS

MISSISSIPPI: Lake Beulah – 40 Crappie Trolling Out from Cow Patty Landing

Monday, August 1st, 2011

Mississippi river stage at Arkansas City is around 19.1 ft. and is on a slow fall. The public ramp is open.

Fishing pressure has been relatively low at Beulah lately but people are still catching fish.  One guy caught over 40 nice crappie trolling out from cow patty landing.  Anglers are also still fishing near the inlet near the public boat ramp.

There have been reports of anglers catching several white and stripped bass along the blue hole banks. Try using a white crankbait or a chartreuse spinner for this species.

Try for bass around piers or flooded trees with topwater lures like buzzbaits and frogs early in the morning and deeper running crankbaits and spinnerbaits during the heat of the day.  For bream, look for beds in shallow water using crickets or red worms.
