MISSISSIPPI: Aberdeen Lake – Popular Areas Are Laydowns on the Channel

Monday, October 15th, 2012

The bass reports are still good with numbers of bass being caught but the quality bite is tough to come by. Best baits have been spinnerbaits and t-rigged plastics.

Popular areas right now are laydowns on the channel and the grass or brushtops in the sloughs.

If you find the shad, the bass won’t be too far away.

The catfish bite is still fair to good. Most reports are coming from the Becker Bottom area and also along the channel near Blue Bluff. Best baits have been liver and cutbait.

The crappie anglers are hitting the old river runs with some success. Pockets and sloughs on the west side of the lake are also good. Best water depths are 4 to 8 feet. Crappie jigs or minnows are both working.

MISSISSIPPI: Aberdeen Lake – Target Shallow Grass with Spinnerbaits & Buzzbaits

Thursday, September 6th, 2012

As the days are getting shorter, fish are starting to make that fall transition, but with the extended heat and humidity the fishing action has been slow.

The old river is probably high and muddy due to heavy rains so alternative areas to fish are recommended.

The crappie reports are still a bit slow but some are catching a few. Target stumps and brush in 4 to 8 ft of water with minnows for best results.

The bass bite has been fair with a few bass anglers reporting some fish being caught in the bigger sloughs by targeting shallow grass with spinnerbaits and buzzbaits.

The catfish reports have been fair but a few catfish are being caught on trotlines fished off the main channel. Whole shad and cutbait has been the best baits.

MISSISSIPPI: Aberdeen Lake – Crappie Anglers Targeting Deeper Banks with Minnows & Jigs

Friday, August 10th, 2012

The bass reports continue to be fair to slow.

Numbers of bass in the 10 to 13 inch range have been showing up along the navigation channel around the mouths of ditches and old river runs. The best chance for a quality bite has been in the deeper sloughs around grass. Buzzbaits and frogs have been the best bait choices early and late in the day as well as during overcast conditions. During the day, Texas rigged plastics and jigs have been the go-to baits. Best baits on the channel have been spinnerbaits and t-rigged plastics. A few anglers are hitting the rip rap above the old river with crankbaits and spinnerbaits.

The few anglers targeting catfish are using jugs and trotlines on the navigation channel and close to the mouth of the old Tombigbee River.

The few crappie reports continue to be slow. Crappie anglers are fishing the old river runs and targeting the deeper banks with minnows and jigs as one or the other may produce more bites any given day.

MISSISSIPPI: Red Snapper Season – Nice 20’s an Hardly Anything Under 10

Wednesday, July 25th, 2012

Red Hot Red Snapper action comes to a close!!!!!! 7-23-2012

What a Great 2012 Red Snapper season it has been aboard that darn ol WhipaSnapa charter boat out of Biloxi Ms.. No sure nuff monsters but alot of nice 20’s an hardly anything under 10. Most all trips had a fine limit except 1 or 2 that the weather didn’t allow us to go very far. A couple of the last trips we were invaded by the o so lovely SHARKS!!! OMG when them s.o.b’s school up on a rig or in a particular area, an you make your drop to the bottom, it just might costya a hook, swivel, sinker an all. If you don’t lose it all, an are fortunate enough to hook one. Especially on bottom, generally they will tangle up with everyone else on the boat !! O what a mess!!!!!!!! But anyway, let’s move on!! But not South this time, before we had been, just going further south, but the further we went the thicker they got. Lets try about 15 miles to the west this time, that did the trick. NO SHARKS HOLLALOUYA!!! I know some of you like’m an all, an they do eat pretty good, an they do fight pretty good, but they have a tendency to make me pull my freakin hair out. Especially when I’m snapper fishing. Sometimes certain bodies of water will just be infested. Just something you have to deal with. Sometimes you can catch one are two snapper before they move in. Then you mightiest well move on..Especially if its those that are big enough to eat your Snapper. We had some 20lb snapper bit off right behind the head. The Barracuda can play havoc as well on a nice catch.. If there is a shortage of the ol Red Snapper its not in our neck of the woods. I don’t see as many of the sure nuff sows like did some 8 to 10 yrs ago. Some due to the fact that I am fishing with a bunch of dang rookies, that just can’t turn the beast.:) Naw (I love my rookies) I think that is were some of the shortage is, the big mature sow snapper. Which from what I’m told are some 30 to 40 yrs old. I remember back just before I started chartering that a limit of over 20lb sows was very common an you could keep 4 per person. Snapper season was also from April to October. The ol Gus area we called sow country which has very few rigs anymore (2 to be exact). Would produce a limit of sows just about every time.!!! O what some battles we had, trying to turn a 25lb+ Snapper took a lot of Heart!!!!

Had a great group of guys in from up Wisconsin way this past week. They booked ol snapa for a whole week of fun. Two offshore’s an two inshore’s an what a blast we had.. I think the group caught about every type of fish in the Gulf of Mexico an the Mississippi sound. Great group of men an some super strong fish bites made for some exciting days on the water for sure. Our first trip out after snapper season started o-ut a lil stormy. Man it is nice havin that XM weather on board to keep an eye on the sky an one on the radar to tell which way to go.. really does help to tell which way the storms are moving an where exactly they are an just how bad they are as well. Some times you just have to take what Mother Nature gives you. Actually all the time cause she is the BOSS!! She will make you change plans sometimes an you just try make do with whatya got. The guys were wanting to fight some reef donkeys (amberjack) even tho they were going to have to return the donkey (opens Aug 1). I did know of a few good Mangrove holes out that way. That would put some meat in the box. A pretty impressive Thunder Boomer had that trail blocked off so a lil detour was in order (plan B). Which landed the 5 man team right up on a few nice Cobia, LIL tunny, King Mackeral, Vermillon Snapper, Lane Snapper, Mangrove Snapper, Scamp Grouper, Dolphin, Black fish, Jacks, an I’m not sure what all. The guys kept their rods bent an their face lit up with them big ol :)s all day long.. An at the end of the day the fish that got the complimentary ride to the Biloxi Shores aboard that darn WhipaSnapa, was pretty impressive indeed!!! So ifya smell what I’m steppin in,”There is a lot more fish in these waters besides a Red Snapper”… So even tho its closed that Ol Gulf Of Mexico is VERY VERY Fisheee!!!So Lets Go Get’m!!!!
Inshore the islands have been producing a great deal of excitement as well. A few cobia some reel nice Kings an Sharks have made those drags sing which produces a 🙂 an just a lil anxiety for what reason IDK but when the clicker goes screaming an the reel is locked an the drag goes screaming most just can’t stay calm. PANICMOANIA sets in an they go reeling as fast as they can. Even when their line is going the opposite direction. A steady turn on the handle is NOT necessary (but it happens anyway). Everyone else goes to screaming an running around like a bunch of chickens with their heads cut off. Everyone wants to see what’s on the other end as quickly as humanly possible.. (enjoy the fight people) once the hook is set an the rod stays bent he not going anywhere!!!!! (most of the time). PUll UP REEL DOWN!!!!!:)

The Bay has really had some very nice trout action 2 @ a time. Still a few nice reds an black drum, big Gafftops, spanish, an lady fish, ground mullet and many more. Fishing is HOT!! Red Hot so moan in here lets venture out on the ol Fishing magician (WhipaSnapa) an let’s stick some meat on a hook an see what try’s to take the meat an run!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MISSISSIPPI: Big ol Bull Reds play One Heck of a Game of Tug of War

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012

The Biloxi, Ms. charter boat WhipaSnapa (an it’s lovely guest). Seriously been hammering some huge, hard fighting reds. Just beyond the Mississippi Sound. Out at the beautiful,an very fishy, Horn Island.

You talkin bout a fight, them dang Big ol Bull Reds play one heck of a game of tug of war. PULL UP REEL DOWN!!!!!!:) We’ve had another large mixture of great folks aboard, Bachelor party’s, families, our great Air Force crew, an more. Mostly for the 6 hour combo trips, the past couple weeks. We hit the inshore light tackle stuff for an hour are so catching up 30, 40 nice croaker along with a few drum an white trout. Then make a short very relaxing boat ride, especially aboard the roomy WhipaSnapa!!! (It just rides so sweet)!!:) out to one of the Barrier Islands off the Ms. shores to get our chum on! Which the past couple weeks Ol Horn Island has been the secret spot. And well, some string pulling shonuff(w/a few those very descriptive words) slipping out every now an then!!! Pretty good mixture of sharks-(blacktip, spinners, atlantic sharpnose), king mackeral, jack cravelle, etc…. But its been a very consistent catch of huge smile pulling Reds. An a bunch of em! That had the WhipaSnapa’s great guest scrambling to get the reel that was screaming!!! So could be the one to lock an load. They were at times double and tripled up w/ the big ol reds an :)s!

We were chumming with poggies. Baits were a nice selection of golden croakers that were anchored on bottom w/about a 2oz sinker rigged Carolina style.. Kings, sharks ,an Jacks were mostly on the croaker as well. But freelined on the surface just behind the transom in the amazing chum slick, produced by our master baiter Mr. Austin F. Might have to replace the drags on the sticks after this week. Moan we saved a few for you an your great WhipaSnapa boating adventure !! Thanks ya’ll lovin every minute of it…

So what you waiting for here is your invitation:

Getcha self on down here, load up on the ol’ WhipaSnapa an let’s get it on!!!

MISSISSIPPI: Ended the Day With 9 Trout, 4 Reds & 1 Flounder

Monday, April 2nd, 2012

…Now to get to the fishing…I had Will, Bill, Jim, and Mark on Saturday. The first three guys on the list surprised Mark with a charter for his birthday. Mark is a local contractor doing some great work with Habitat for Humanity. I will let you in on a little tip. If you are going to surprise your brother-in-law with a charter, don’t pop up at his house with all the kids and wives the night before, “Surprise we are all staying here for a couple days.” That was 13 people and 1 dog crashing Marks birthday weekend, non the less he seemed in good spirits and happy to be on the water with family. We pounded the marsh looking for that one great bite which did not come. All the trout and bait I was finding a week or two ago has seemed to vanish. I can’t figure it out, maybe the rain, maybe it was just the first wave of trout, and this next full moon will bring a new batch of fish. We did how ever supplement the lack of trout with red fish. We found plenty of reds we probably caught over 20, the size was not all there but the action was pretty good. We ended the day with 10 trout 8 reds and 2 flounder. Not the box full we were hoping for, but a beautiful day on the water with great people!

Sunday I had Pat and Ryan from Georgia. I met Pat at the Saltwater Sportsman Seminar a year ago. Pat and Ryan both were eager to get to the marsh and away from the sounds of slot machines for a little while. We did much of what I did the day before, hunting. We could never find more then one or two trout per spot. It wasn’t a matter of finding good water, I found some of the prettiest water I have seen in a week. Again the bait was just not there along with the fish. The bright part of the day was to see Ryan catch the first two reds, which were also his first two reds, on 10lb test. We get them in the boat and Ryan says,”That’s 4-4.5lbs”, so I weigh it and sure enough, 4.5lbs. Well, his dad Pat gets one in the boat and Ryan says,”That’s 6lb”, he was right on again. Come to find out he has been working in a meat market for ten years. These guys were a pleasure to be around and am looking forward to fishing with them in the fall. We ended the day with 9 trout, 4 reds, and 1 flounder.

MISSISSIPPI: Winter Fishing Tips – Use Dark or Natural Colored Soft Plastics in 10ft of Water

Monday, January 2nd, 2012

Power-Pole Style Anchor SystemCheck out this big 10 lb 9 oz bass recently caught by 7 year old Bailey at Calling Panther!

Winter Fishing Tips

Large mouth bass can be caught in the winter.  Try using shiners in 10 feet of water for big fish. If using artificial lures, try using dark or natural colored soft plastics in 10 feet of water.  Target the areas with significant depth changes. Also, try crankbaits and rattletraps off the levee in the afternoons.

Bream fishing can be slow, but try using crickets and redworms around brushtops in 5-10 feet of water.

Catfish can be caught on liver or cool-cat worms fished on the bottom in about 5-10 feet of water. Also, try the creek channel in the lake as well as the creek at the nature trail.

Crappie can be found in 15 feet of water suspended at around 9 feet.  Fish structure in these areas with a minnow or jig (white or chartruese).  Also, try the structure around the dam.

MISSISSIPPI: Big Brute Sheepshead Have Been Avg. 4 to 8 lbs

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011

Sheepshead and Reds make them drags sing!!! 12-5-2011

This Biloxi, Ms. Charter Boat Whipasnapa, has delivered a many of good looking smiles lately. Wonderful folks from all around this great USA and abroad, have enjoyed time aboard that Darn ol Whipasnapa this past week or so.

Ohio, Iowa, Alabama,Texas, Missouri, California, Rhode Island, Ms. & England probably even missed a few. Sure glad to have’em. And according to all the smiles, they were glad to be aboard. With a light tackle spincast in hand something on the other end making those drags sing. We all know what happens, when that happens..:)

Them dang big ol sheepshead on light tackle is bout as good as it gets. They really put up one heck of a scrap. I have really enjoyed experimenting with them in the kitchen. They eat excellent! Very versatile, grilled, baked, fried, stuffed, pattied, po boyed or potato crusted all have suited the taste buds mighty fine!

They have been very reliable as well, averaging 12-20 per trip, only fished 2 to 3 hrs. on most. The Big brute sheepshead have been avg. 4 to 8 lbs with a red are 2 in there to boot. Of course the biggest ones got away just before surrendering to the net. Most trips flew in, so not really keeping a whole lot. Some took a few to the local restaurants to have prepared to their liking. They all had thumbs up on that gig!!
We still gettin’em’on! So moan down an get’em’on with us. shoot throw some out there for that holiday table spread!!

Probably the last report for this great 2011 season so…We Wish everyone a VERY Merry Christmas !!!

MISSISSIPPI: Columbus Lake – Throw Shallow Running Crankbaits, Spinnerbaits & Swimbaits

Friday, November 11th, 2011

The crappie bite is fair to good and should continue thru this month.

Hit the old river runs right now for best results. The runs that are closed off on the upstream end will be the ones to target. Crappie are holding on stumps and laydowns in 4 to 8 ft of water that have deeper water nearby. Crappie jigs have been outproducing minnows, but that can change daily.

The bass reports are still fair with most of the action happening in the same areas as the crappie. The river runs are producing a few quality fish, and the gravel pits are holding good numbers of keeper-size bass. The bass seem to be holding just off shoreline structure and relating bait vs. wood or grass. Throw shallow running crankbaits, spinnerbaits and swimbaits where shad are active.

Catfish reports are the same as for Aberdeen with most folks hitting the channel and the mouths of the old river runs with jugs and rod-n-reels with some success.
