ONTARIO – Canada: Jigs and Minnows Were Best this Week

Tuesday, September 4th, 2012

More excellent fishing to report this week, although some may interpret it to be “slow”.

Don Thompson’s crew certainly would as they ONLY managed to boat 675 fish this week, one of the “slowest” years Don remembers in his 20+ coming to camp. I guess it’s all relative when you have been coming to camp for that long. How’s this for a week of fishing. Andy Augustine- many of you recognize the name along with his father Keith, as two of our most dedicated pike fishermen. Well they do a little walleye fishing on occasion while here too. In fact, Andy had releases this week of 29″, 26″, 24″, 23″, 22″, four 21″, and a 20″. Keith his father released walleyes as follows: four 22″, six 21″, and four 20″. Not to be completely outdone by “the boys”, Esther (Mom) while not spending nearly as much time on the water as the guys still managed to release a 24″, and three 21″ walleye.

Keith Messenger’s crew mentioned that the week was the best fishing for big walleye they have had since they have been coming to camp (relative newbies at three years). Rod Glessner released 25 1/2″ and 24″ walleyes, Don Schmidt released a 25″ walleye and Keith released a 20 1/2″ walleye, and they had a bunch more in the 18-20″ range and one sixteen incher that was so fat they measured it three times as they just couldn’t believe their eyes. Warren Tester’s had another crew here for their second trip this season with Bruce Rimstad releasing  22″ and 21 1/2″ walleyes, John Siffert releasing 22″, 21″ and a 19″ walleye, and Carter Christie releasing  21 1/2″, 20″ and 19″ ‘eyes.

Finally Brian Pralle was here again with his sister Brenda and parents Don and Joan and caught plenty of fish to take home and eat during the week. In fact Brenda, on her first Canadian fishing trip released a beautiful 21″ walleye as did Don.

Jigs and minnows were best this week fished on deeper structure in 24-32 fow, although a shallower bite was also going on with the same presentation in 16-18 fow.

MISSISSIPPI: Crappie – Catching in Deeper Water, Around Brushtops on Minnows & Jigs

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

Water temps are running in the low 70’s.

The bream report is good with a lot of bream bedding right now in 3-8ft of water. Most anglers are tight-lining crickets and redworms, and a few are being caught on jigs. The bass reports have been fair to good. Most anglers are hitting shallow grassy areas, as well as points and the creek channel. Texas-rigged plastics, crankbaits, and spinnerbaits have all been catching fish.

Look to catch a few bass holding around bream beds as well. We’re hearing more reports of bass anglers harvesting some fish, which should be a tremendous help to the population if it continues.

The crappie bite is fair with a few anglers catching them in deeper water around brushtops on both minnows and jigs.
