ALABAMA: Lake Eufaula – Bass are still Working Shallow Cover

Friday, August 10th, 2012

The river remains low, please use the cans and creek markers. The stumps are just under the surface. The marked river and creeks are safe to run, avoiding them could result in injury or a damaged boat.It is not worth the chance. Idle to the spots off the safe areas to fish.

Bass are still working the shallow cover areas well up into the day as long as the clouds stay up. As soon as the sun breaks through, look for the shad action right behind you. Big fish are feeding around the pads. A swimming worm has better hook up percentage. They are striking but not eating the bait, so the frogs are getting more missed hits.

Pan Fish are slow but where you can find any brush hanging in the water, they are working the area. With the water down, it is hard to find bank cover right now.

Cats are doing good. Still, setting up on the top of a drop and fishing the deeper water is producing table fare. You can also fish big pinks around the outer edges of the pads early and you will catch some while they are roaming around feeding on the bait. If you have found a site to set up where the pads are near a drop, you have the best of both worlds, fish from both sides of the boat and you will be busy for sure.

Be sure and keep plenty of sunscreen and water with you. It is fun on the water this time of year, if you stay hydrated and do not get burned up when the sun does come out. Keep a close eye on the clouds, the afternoon storms can come on you fast. Pay attention to the winds, they will alert you of changing conditions you may not be able to see with the high banks up river.

ALABAMA: Lake Eufaula – Bass Need Extremely Slow Presentations

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

Water Level 187.86 msl
Temperature low 80’s
Clarity, stained to clear

The water level is dangerously low. Be sure and respect the river cans and creek poles.

The cold weather and low water have the fish off their game. Tournaments usually needing 20 plus pound bags this time of year are paying first place with less than 10 pounds.

The pads are not completely formed out, we should be fishing pad fields that are acres in size. The grass and cover are on dry ground.

Bass need extremely slow presentations of soft plastics and top water baits.

Crappie are still biting jigs on the top of drops and at night under lights.Jigs are the trick.

Pan fish are doing okay on worms and crickets. As the weather warms up, this action will pick up.

Catfish are slower than usual but warmer weather will change that for the better.

Remember:

The Lee King Benefit Buddy Tournament coming up in three weeks. This is our first memorial tournament since Lee’s passing. Please visit www.leekingbenefit.org for all the details, or stop by S & K Outdoors in Eufaula to sign up.

ALABAMA: Lake Eufaula Fishing

Thursday, December 2nd, 2010

Water level today 188.66 msl
Clarity clear to stained
Water Temperature; 60’s and cooling down

Bass are still being stubborn, schooling bass are going back to hitting the hard baits, top water poppers and the lipless crank baits. Soft plastics are working in the Texas rigs and jigs around any type of shore cover.

Crappie are really getting hot now and will only get better as winter continues. The trolling is the trick now, slow if the ticket. You will know you are trolling too fast when the hybrids begin to strike. They are a lot of fun on the ultra light tackle. We are seeing crappie in the 16″ size already. For the still fishermen, find the brush piles or overhangs on the shore line and work the bottom up ’till you locate the depth the crappie are using. Right now, fish are in the 13 foot depth, we are dropping the minnow to the bottom and cranking up two turns at a time and waiting for a bite. If nothing hits, do it again ’till you get a bite and then use this pattern for the rest of the trip. When trolling, tip your jig with a live minnow to increase your hits.

Cat fish are doing well on bottom lines or jugs. The fishermen at the dam are having good catches with some big fish coming in.

Remember to dress warm, the winter winds cut tight through you and drink plenty of water.

Merry Christmas

ALABAMA: Lake Eufaula Fishing

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

Bass are hitting Top Toad frogs and the new Revere Maxx weed less frogs early and late. The old popper baits are holding the fish up on top very well after the tight cover hit is over. Pink and bubble gum colors are getting a lot of attention. The different shaped baits are doing well as they tire of the conventional styles. The new Emerald Strike line is a good change from the old ones.

Soft plastics rigged on the Fin-tech Nuckle Ball jig and the Title Shot are getting great results.June Bug in the 6″ to 10 1/2″ curl tail worm and good. The Gold Shad Lizard is still hot, over 5000 sold since the Georgia Top Six visited Eufaula several weeks ago.

The Emerald Strike Droopy Eyeker is getting the Bass’ attention in deeper water. The fish are holding around tree piles and structure in 18 to 22 feet. They do not want to see anything moving fast in this heat. The big lipped Droopy Eyeker will stay in the strike zone on a very slow roll.

Night fishing for bass is picking up since the days are so hot. The results are seeing bigger bass being taken. Dark lures and baits are the best bet as the fish are seeing silhouettes against the night sky.

Crappie are doing a little bit at night around the causeway and bridges. You need plenty of repellant.

Cats are really on fire now, especially at the dam with the water running. The sizes are getting bigger with reports of 20 pound plus not uncommon.

ALABAMA: Lake Eufaula

Saturday, June 19th, 2010

Lake Eufaula, Alabama

Lake Level 188.71 MSL
Water clarity, clear to stained
Water temperature upper 80’s to low 90’s

Bass fishing has been hot these past few weeks. Tournament fishermen are bringing in good sacks of 24 + pounds to take first place. Last Saturday we had 169 teams fish the annual Lee King Benefit Buddy Tournament and it took the father and son team of Tom and Mike Pierce 24.93 pounds for five fish to cash in on the $1500.00 first place prize. Thank you to all the fishermen who toughed out the hot weather to support another successful event for Niemann-Pick disease research.

The bass are very active in the tight cover early, hitting the top toad from Big Bite in the tight cover. The Emerald Strike gold lizard and black neon floating finesse worm rigged on the Nuckle Ball jig are the next go to bait in the same water, just a few inches deep when the top water action slows down. When it is time to go deep, the 3/4 oz. Zone-R jig from Fin-Tech rigged with the black neon Emerald Strike finesse worm in doing good. Also the deep diving Emerald Strike big lipped Droopy Iker is a go to bait. It will get to 25+ feet on a hard crank and will easily stay in 18+ feet on a slow roll, which they seem to prefer right now. Carolina rigs with the sale soft plastics are also catching good bass. Any cover you locate on the 18 to 30 foot drops are holding bass. The absence of the hydrilla is bringing the old time ledge fishing back into play. The good ‘ole days on Lake Eufaula are coming back. Bring plenty of sun screen and water and do not miss the action. Last week when the Mayfly hatch finally occurred, the bluegill action was huge causing the shallow bass fishing to be crazy. The tournament anglers were loaded with action while the bass were feeding on the ‘gills. Shad have been schooling for the longest periods fishermen can remember. I had a client with me a few days ago and we witnessed the action in the shallows and deeper water all at the same time. One customer was in the store telling me he was in schooling fish for over an hour and a half at one time.

The blue gills are spotty but doing well on red worms and crickets. You must work the cover on the bank lines for a period of time and you will hit a pocket and pick up 10 to 20 and when it slows down, start the trek again ’till you find the next pocket.

Catfish are doing well, some nice ones are coming on tight lines, for the fisherman who wants a little faster action, the jugs are the answer, baited with cut bait or stir fry strips.

Trolling deep for the Hybrids is picking up now. The deep running Emerald Strike deep running Droopy Iker and the 1 1/4 oz Emerald Strike Lipless Crank Baits are really working on the big boys trolled under power, especially in the late afternoons in the river and creek mouths.

The action at the dam is still on fire. The big surf rigs using 5 oz lead on a three way swivel and a 1/4 oz. Fin Tech title shot jig and a pearl or white fluke or shad are bringing in some really big strippers.

Be sure and have plenty of cool water and sun screen to make for a safe day in the heat. Do not forget your camera, the baby birds are beginning to fly and try some independence. It is like a comedy act. God has provided plenty of photo opportunities for the memories next winter.
