GEORGIA: Lake Allatoona – Take Your Umbrella Rigs

Monday, October 15th, 2012

Line-Sides bite is Slow.

The lake is starting to turnover and the fish are scatter from one end of the lake to the other including the rivers.

These fish are on the move and are hard to stay on top of once you do find them. Then you throw in the full moon this pasted Saturday and the 3 plus inches of rain we had it makes fishing twice as tough as a normal turnover…

If your heading out this week be sure to take your Umbrella Rigs. The trolling bite isn’t much better then the live bait bite, but it will catch you a few fish this time of year…

I think we are getting just days away from a good bite.

The water temperature is in the middle 70’s and good things are just around the corner…..

GEORGIA: Lake Allatoona – Flex-It in Chartreuse Will Get Gobbled

Friday, February 17th, 2012

Very good.

Fishing this week is the same as last weeks maybe a little better, change nothing…. The fish are biting well, and we have been catching 15- to 30-fish on most trips, when at this time last year big shad kills had almost shut down the fishing.

The north end of the lake has been so muddy that it hasn’t been worth fishing.

Likewise, the south end — from Bethany Bridge to Tanyard — hasn’t been worth fishing either, mid-lake, from Duck Hole down to the dam is where most of the fish are. There are a few fish being caught from Duck Hole to Harbortown, but the highest concentrations of fish are from Galts Ferry to Clear Creek, and there are huge schools of fish and tons of boats in the 1/2-mile stretch at Bartow Carver.

The last two weeks has almost been like a late-summer bite, in that downlines are the deal. The fish are anywhere from 25 to 50 feet deep, I suggested starting the morning with downlines at about 32 feet and then adjusting as you figure out where the fish are. Medium shiners and shad are working equally well as bait, with trout running a close third. Spoons are also a good option if the fish appear to be sitting near the bottom. A 1/4- to 1/2-oz. Flex-It in chartreuse will get gobbled as quickly as a live bait if the fish are on the bottom. An umbrella rig will also catch a few fish, but they won’t hit it in muddy water.

Find the cleanest water available where you’re still marking fish before you pull a U-rig. His success with the U-rig has also come mid-lake.

GEORGIA: Lake Allatoona – Remember to Down Size Hooks to Match Shiners for More Strikes

Wednesday, January 4th, 2012

Line-Sides is Good.

I didn’t fish as much as I would have like this week due to the weather but the few times I was on the water fishing was good. The bait is starting to move back into the Creek and so are the Striper and Hybrids.

Mid lake seems to be holding better numbers of fish then the southend and the northend but I think all the creeks on the lake will produce line-sides right now. Shiners fished on free-lines and planner boards are producing better then trout and shad right now. Remember to down size your hooks to match your shiners for more strikes.

After the sun comes up switch to pulling umbrella Rigs. I have had my best luck this week pulling my rigs 145 feet behind the boat at 3.1 to 3.4 miles and hour. And have caught fish weighting up to 21 lbs.

As the lake starts to clears the umbrella rig bite will get great.

GEORGIA: Lake Allatoona – Live Bait is Really Starting to Work Well

Monday, October 3rd, 2011

Line side fishing is the same this week as last weeks . The fish are on the move, but will eat when you find them. Live bait is really starting to work well on these fish right now. But I still think the spoon bite is the best bite going right now. The southend of the lake is still the place to be. Any where from clear Creek to the Allatoona Creek arm. Troll these area’s with your Mack Farr u-rigs. As soon as you find one of these MEGA schools drop live bait down to them or use a 1 oz spoon on them.

The top water bite has down this weeks compare to last weeks. But should pick back up with the cooler weather we are expecting this weekend. Look for these fish on top early morning and late afternoon. Most of the top-water action we have seen this week has been in eye site of the dam.

GEORGIA: Lake Allatoona – Start Fishing Live Shad Downlined to 24 Feet

Thursday, August 11th, 2011

Good.

The live-bait bite is starting to fall off some because it’s hard to keep your shad alive, and the trolling bite is starting to pick up. We are catching 10 to 30 stripers and hybrids on a morning trip right now.

Because dissolved oxygen is so low in the lake right now, all of the fish seem to be within eyesight of the dam. Concentrate your efforts on either arm within a mile of the dam. Anywhere from the mouth of Stamp Creek to Bethany Bridge should hold fish. Good places to look are Coopers Branch, Iron Hill and the Red Top Campground cove. Once you find the fish, start the morning fishing live shad downlined to 24 feet. This can be a good bite if you’re on feeding fish, but fresh baits every three or four minutes are necessary to keep lively shad on the line.

Once this peters out, switch to trolling umbrella rigs. I have been having most of my success pulling nine 1/2-oz. white bucktails with chartreuse trailers about 110 feet behind the boat, which puts his rigs about 24 feet deep. Also keep your topwater baits ready in case any schooling fish come up. They’ll hit a popping cork, fluke or Sammy, but I prefers the biggest white Rooster Tail he can find. The secret to getting bit is to fish with light line (6-lb. test) and to retrieve your bait as fast as you can crank it in. In these conditions it’s important to get your fish back in the water quickly if you want to release it. Keep your camera ready because a quick release can mean the difference between a dead fish and one that swims away.

We also suggested riding back over the area you just fished and keeping any floaters.

GEORGIA: Allatoona – Caught Fish with Jewel Akins Jigs & Brown/Chartreuse Spanky’s Jigs

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011

Allatoona: Level: 2.3 feet below full pool. Temp: 88-90 degrees. Clarity: Clear; 4- to 4 1/2-foot visibility.

Bass: Fair to good.

Matt Driver reports, “Even though about 80 percent of the bass are deep this month, we have caught several fish shallower, with a few coming on Jewel Akins jigs and brown-with-chartreuse Spanky’s jigs on blowdowns in the main-lake pockets. This bite has been late evening and early morning. As usual the fresh brush bite is hit or miss, and you need to cover multiple piles just to catch a limit. Brush in the 12- to 18-foot range that is isolated and not heavily fished is holding good spots and largemouths. As in the past month, sonar and side-finder machines are very helpful. Fishing blind is not very productive. The night and evening bite is the ticket. Deep cranking a Spro Little John DD in cell mate and a big Colorado-blade spinnerbait around brush and large rocks in the 12- to 18-foot range is producing good fish. Use the Little John DD on 10-lb. Sunline fluorocarbon and a 7-foot, 11-inch St. Croix glass cranking rod so you can feel the different type bottom your bait is hitting. For numbers, the shaky head and drop shot are your best bet. For the shaky head, we are using the 1/8-oz. Davis Bait Company HBT jig head tipped with a natural-colored, squirrel-tailed worm made by Big Bite. As for the drop shot, I fish it on 6- or 8-lb. test Sniper fluorocarbon tipped with a Big Bite Shaky Squirrel finesse worm with a 1/0 Gamakatsu drop-shot hook. Fish it slow around rock and brush in 12 to 16 feet in the Etowah River. Don’t be afraid to make multiple casts to the same area to evoke a strike from a finicky bass.”

Craig Miller, of the Dugout, reports, “Concentrate your efforts on deep points and steep banks in 18 to 22 feet of water. The fish are on any piece of deep cover in these areas. The cover can be anything from brushpiles to rocks or stumps. The most productive baits are Texas-rigged worms or shaky heads with 6-inch Roboworms. Good colors are morning dawn and black grape. If the fish will not bite a worm, switch to a 1/4-oz. Spanky’s jig. Sometimes the fish prefer the jig. Fishing deep-running crankbaits at night in these same areas will also produce fish. Baits such as DD22s in midnight blue or raspberry will do the trick. Be sure to achieve maximum depth. Early in the mornings, there is a small window of opportunity to catch fish on topwater. Fish points and around docks with a Super Spook Jr. in chrome or bone. As the sun begins to rise, try to find as much shade as possible to fish.”

Linesides: Good.

Robert Eidson said the live-bait bite is starting to fall off some because it’s hard to keep your shad alive, and the trolling bite is starting to pick up. He’s catching 20 to 35 stripers and hybrids on a morning trip right now. Because dissolved oxygen is so low in the lake right now, all of the fish seem to be within eyesight of the dam. GEORGIA: Lake Allatoona-Pulling U-Rigs Near the Mouth of Stamp Creek

Friday, June 10th, 2011

Line sides fishing is great.

Guys the summer pattern is in full swing right now. That means it is time for Downlines, U-rigs ( Mack Farr ) and down riggers. Shad are very hard to keep a live right now.. So make sure you carry a couple a Doz. shiners with you when you head to the water. The southend of the lake is by far the best bite on the lake right now. Live bait fished off of any main lake point right now will get you bit. Also the humps in the mouth of all the main creeks are holding fish right now. There is also a good evening bite at the dam.

Trolling.

The trolling bite is great right now for big fish. I have had some really good fish this week pulling u-rigs near the mouth of Stamp Creek. The trolling bite is a little slower then the live bait bite. But seems to be producing bigger fish for me…

GEORGIA: Lake Allatoona – The Bite Really Slowed Down this Week…

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

Line-sides, Fair !!!! The bite really slowed down this week do to, high winds, major drop in the temperatures and the full moon phase. The river bite is almost over, and should be completely over by next week. The flats at the mouth of Sweet-water Creek, S-Turns and Little River are all holding fish right at sun up and then again at sun set. We are also starting to see some sparatic top water action on the flats out in front of Kellogg’s Creek and also on the flats out in front of the beach at Galts Ferry.

The bite should really get good in the next couple of days. This cold front we just had really made them get lock jaw on us… Look for the top water bite to really heat up in the next couple of weeks. Popping corks with ” Red Roosters ” flies , Rooster-tails or a Jr Spook will all work well on these top water line-sides. After the suns comes up there is nothing better then downing live bait on the edge of the river channels for a mix bag of Stripers, Hybrids, Spots and Catfish in the same locations as mention up above. The south-end of the lake was also producing good numbers of fish before the cold front. There wasn’t nearly as much top water action, but the trolling bite seem to be better on the south end of the lake. The mouth’s of Clark and Stamp Creek and then again in Iron Hill seem to be best when fishing south..

Catching bait this year isn’t nearly as hard this year as the past two years. You still have to work for them, but if your willing to get up early bait can be caught at Little River ” From the Bridge all the way up to Blanket Creek. And then again on the south-end of the Lake in Tanyard, Clarks, 75 Bridge – old 41 bridge and at the spillway. If your looking for big baits then you need to head to lake Acworth. Acworth is holding a ton of dollar bill size Gizzard shad this year.

God Bless.

GEORGIA: Lake Allatoona Fishing

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

1. Line-sides Good the fishing slowed down a little after the cold front that we had last week. But has really started to pick back up in the past couple of days .Flat lines and Planner Boards are working very well right at sun and then again at sun down. Trout Gizzard shad and Thread fins are all working well. The shiner bait has really slowed down. After the sun comes up try down lining of a any main lake point.

Trolling – It is still the BEST bite on the lake. Troll your Mack Farr u-rigs right on the edge of the river channel and hold on. The Dugout in Marietta has everything you need when it comes to trolling for Stripers….

Top water The top water bite is really starting to heat up. And the key to finding the top water bite is finding the birds. The sea Gulls show up in big numbers last week. And are staying close to the feeding line-sides. The best time to take a Monster stripers off the top is right at sun up. And just before dark. These fish aren’t as picky as the fish at Lanier.( Not as much fishing pressure ) they with hit anything you throw at them. When they are feeding on top.
