N CAROLINA: Wrightsville Beach – Spanish, Kings, Reds, Flounder Biting

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011

We have been dodging the weather it seems for weeks and weeks. But, on the days we can fish, the swimming critters have been very cooperative. Bluefish, Spanish, reds and a few flounder are biting inshore/near shore. Offshore the kings are biting along with wahoo, blackfin and mahi.

INSHORE:
Very nice reds, up to 29 inches have been biting fresh cut bluefish. Several in the 24-26 inch size range have been biting well also. A few flounder are biting as well. Some menhaden have shown up but they are spotty.

Near Shore:
Bluefish in good numbers and good size have been biting strong around the inlets and along the beach. Troll for them with deep divers, jig for them with your favorite jig or throw gotcha plugs to catch these choppers. A few Spanish have shown up mixed in with the blues. Most have been caught trolling clarkspoons.

Offshore:
Some bonito and false albacore have made brief appearances in the 3-10 mile range. Kings are still further out 25-40 miles.

Gulfstream:
Lots of wahoo, blackfin tuna and mahi have been caught by the boats making the bluewater trip.

Upcoming: Look for the Spanish bite to take off any day now. The water temp is in the 67 degree range. In the spring it is fun to catch these fish on Yozuri Deep Diver fished at 3 to 3.4 knots. As it warms up you will need to change to clarkspoons on #1 planers.

Until next time…..

LET’S GO FISHING!!!

FLORIDA: Smoker Kings in Panama City!

Saturday, April 9th, 2011

I know its been awhile since I have given a report lately, the good old spring time winds have finally started to show themselves.

I did however get a chance to get out today and we in store for an action packed day. The Spanish mackeral were everywhere and they were the big ones 4-5 lb average. There was also big bull redfish cruising around and willing to bite cigar minnows. But the real reason we were out there was for the kings. The smoker kings were swimming down the bar and we were sight casting to them also using dead and alive cigar minnows. They were very hungry to say the least. My brother caught two in the 40 lb range and we caught several more in the 20 to 30 lb class.

The pompano have also made their grand entrance and the bite was good for most of the day. As for the Cobia they have slowed down the last couple days but with the full moon only a week and half away it should show significant improvements in the coming future.

King fishing is very exciting, they pull lots of drag and sometimes jump out of the water when feeding. Don’t miss out on your oppurtunity to catch you a smoker king of your own

MISSISSIPPI: THE Gulf Is The Place To Be!

Friday, November 19th, 2010

Mr. Chet Bigon and Jason got us off to a strong start.

In from Texas, the guys boarded the THE WHIPASNAPA CHARTER BOAT and after our lil crisp but pleasant ride across the beautiful waters. IT WAS ON! They wasn’t keeping no fish but they was sure catching! Loads of snapper,(the practically extinct red snapper or so they say) couple nice cobia, kings and several other GREAT fighting fish kept the fellows bowed up and under pressure most of the day. Most all fish caught just free lining baits (DEAD OR ALIVE) Good weather, good fish bite, The Gulf is the place to be!!

Went hunting for a couple of days and with very lil movement, decided the Gulf is the place to be! Mr. Don Clark from Ca. brought his daughter (an great lil fisherwomen) in for a short lil light tackle trip Friday. Great trip!! They were also doing catch and release. Ms Amber Clark was cramping and hurting (from catching so many fish) yet still smiling. Think mostly cause she was putting it on dad. At the end cramps and all, she was still anxiously awaiting her pole to be baited an back in the water for more. She caught -flounder, sheepshead, trout, croakers, cats, and some great drum action wrapped us up! All fish caught on them fresh dead shrimp or cut bait!!!!!!

Had couple locals in for lil meat drive on Saturday. And yes, the Gulf is the place to be!! Limit of really nice red snapper, some nice mangroves, (finally) sharks, kings, and cobia, made for a pretty steady blast!!

ONE MORE WEEKEND FOR SNAPPER SEASON!!!

So load up and let that Darn WHIPASNAPA CHARTER BOAT, take you on your Gulf of Mexico Adventure!!

WISCONSIN: Big Kings Coho & Lake Trout filling the Cooler

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

Fishing Milwaukee is excellent with Big Kings Coho and Lake Trout filling the cooler. Southwest wind has pushed the warm water out. Very good action on all species working 40 to 70 feet of water in White Fish Bay three miles north of Milwaukee’s north gap.

With 48 degree surface temperature 2,3,4,5,6 and 8 color lead core are working. Travel northeast out of the North Gap about 3 miles at a 50 degrees compass for the cold water that holds the fish. Look for fish from 10 to 40 down on all presentations. Slide Divers with 100 feet of line out are a steady producer with magnum Reaper Peacock or Fish n Chip spoons. Downriggers from 20 to 40 down on long lead spoons are my go to rig with magnum silver spoons. Customers are enjoying great action on Chinook salmon to 18 pounds. A combination of Salmon and Trout in all sizes are active. The boat speed of 2.0 gave the best results.

NORTH CAROLINA: S. East Saltwater Report

Friday, June 11th, 2010

Fish have settled into a summertime pattern, which means most species are active but not exactly schooled up in one place. Fish are scattered but still feeding aggressively, especially around any kind of structure, at night, and in the early morning.

Pier fishing has been on fire at the end as nice king mackerel have been landed on the southern piers. In addition to the kings, Spanish mackerel, chopper bluefish, snapper blues, and even a few Jacks have been prowling around. Action for these fun and aggressive fish comes and goes but is often hot in the early morning, late evening and at night.

Some speckled trout are in the ocean now and being caught by surf and pier anglers. Pier anglers can use live shrimp while surf casters are generally throwing MirrOlures. There are also trout scattered inshore and live shrimp or Gulp baits are the best bet.

Flounder fishing continues to be the best thing going inshore as speckled trout and redfish action is off and on. Flounder can be caught drifting or trolling in the inlets but the bigger fish are around the bridges and docks of the waterway.

There are still lots of blues and some sea mullet in the surf, but the pompano have been slow to show this summer.

They should be along any day.

FLORIDA: The Bite Is Still On

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

The bite in Miami has been great. The fishing continues to be very strong with great catches of sailfish, snapper, kings, tarpon and some tuna. Let’s get right to it.

Let me start by saying that the mahi have not really shown up in good numbers just yet. We have caught one here and there and you hear of someone catching some but not in the numbers I like to hear. This situation can only improve from where it is right now.

Now lets talk about all that is IS happening in Miami. You would think that it was December with some of the sailfish numbers that we are experiencing. We have had some days of going 5 for 7 in just 3 ½ hours of fishing. That is excluding any other fish we might have caught during that action. I had a repeat customer out with me a couple of days ago. It was just he and I. At one point we had the bottom rod get slammed while a sailfish came tail walking by the boat only to see the far bait get slammed by who knows what and cut our line. Let’s just say that he was tired by the end of the day. But that is how good the sailfish have been biting they have been consistent and plentiful. Right now I don’t see this slowing down as long as we continue to have some current.

In addition to the sails the kingfish bite has been as good as I have seen it in a while. This weekend I fished a meat tournament (tuna, mahi, kingfish, wahoo). I saw one king that weighed 57 pounds and several kings between 40 and 50. We won’t even mention the 20-30 pounders that seemed almost unimpressive in comparison. The kings have been eating almost any and every kind of bait imaginable from the kite to flat lines to the mid depth rod. They have definitely kept us on our toes the past couple of weeks as they have been stacked up from Miami to the Palm Beach.

The blackfin tuna are starting to trickle in while the biggest one we caught pulled the scale down to the 27 pound mark. Mixed in with the larger blackfin are of course smaller blackfin and false albacore. These fish are lots of fun on light tackle and put up a tremendous fight.

The bottom bite has been very good for me. We have been catching mutton snapper into the 12-13 pound mark. For those of you who have been wondering the grouper season is now open so we will no longer have to put back some of those beautiful groupers we have caught the past couple of months. I always like to send my customers home with a bag of fish to remember me by.

The tarpon have been biting very consistently. We caught tarpon on all of our 1-9 trips except one. And to be honest we only fished for 1 hour that day due to the good offshore bite we had going on. The tarpon will be here till the end of June then we will be forced to fish the tides in the bay to catch them so get on them now while we can. Most of the fish are on the larger side with many of the fish ranging into the 100 plus range. The fish have been anywhere from the beaches to the bay depending on the tide. But don’t concern yourself with that let me take care of it and put you on some quality tarpon. Most people think that you have to race far offshore to catch big fish but this is untrue. Some of the biggest fish in the ocean, tarpon, are in only 10-20 feet of water. Well that is it for now so if you are tired of all the talk about oil spills and the world’s troubles give me a call and let’s go pull on some fish.

For those of you wondering about how the oil spill is affecting our area it is not. The beaches remain clean and the waters warm and beautiful. Hopefully we will be able to dodge this bullet but until now it has not had any impact on us.
