FLORIDA: Most of the Fish we have caught have been in the 18 to 30 inch range

Tuesday, May 1st, 2012

Finally, the windy months of March and April are almost behind us and we can look forward to the great fishing weather that May has to offer us on the Treasure Coast. Other than the usual windy days, it has been a pretty mild winter and spring has arrived. Look for warmer temperatures and little less blustery days. As the water temperatures climb, the fishing will steadily improve on the river. It will provide fantastic mornings for top water and lazy afternoons to drift the flats. May is one of my favorite months on the water!

Redfish will be our main target throughout the month of May. The past several years have bought us schools of slot sized redfish along the Indian River. Most of the fish we have caught have been in the 18 to 30 inch range. They have been sunning on the flats and May gets their blood pumping and turns on the feeding. I always have three lures ready during May…DOA shrimp, CAL jerk baits and top water lures. Gold spoons will also be a great addition to the arsenal when fishing for redfish. As the fish school up, look for them around the edges of the flats. Most of the river here on the Treasure Coast has been holding redfish and you should be able to find some on your favorite flats. I tend to enjoy the east side of the river, but we have found many on the west side as well.

Snook fishing in the early mornings will bring some rod bending action as they head up on the flats for an early morning or late evening meal. Top water lures, Baitbusters and DOA shrimp are all great lures to tempt a snook into biting. Docks will also hold snook lurking around for an easy meal. Live shrimp is hard to beat around the docks. In the inlet areas, try around the seawalls and bridges with live bait, Terror Eyz, feather jigs or deep diving plugs. I love early morning for great snook fishing opportunities!

Trout will continue to feed on top water at first light and live shrimp on popping corks during the day. As the sun rises, they will head off the shallows to deeper water in the two to four foot range. We have had some nice gator trout of late and should see some still in the river in the early parts of May. I have had great success with CAL jerk baits and Deadly Combos this year in place of live shrimp. Both sides of the river have been productive in early mornings. Winter fishing for trout has been good this year and spring should continue to give you some great action.

Bridges will hold the usual Sheephead catch, while snapper will be moving into the river along with flounder. Jacks will be patrolling the areas and creating havoc all over the river. Beaches will produce whiting with still a few catches of Spanish mackerel and bluefish. Tarpon will begin their trek into the river and you can start looking for them in the St Lucie River, Big and Little Mud areas and into the channels of the river. May is a great month to fish the Treasure Coast….plan on a trip out on the river soon!

As always, remember, fishing is not just another hobby….it’s an ADVENTURE!!

Good Fishing and Be Safe,

N CAROLINA: Inshore Fishing Around Wrightsville Beach Heating Up

Tuesday, April 19th, 2011

Hi Folks, fishing is definitely heating up. Water temps from the 5 mile to inshore are right at the 63-64 mark. There have been good catches of drum inshore, blues on the beach, false albacore around 10 miles and kings 20-30 miles out. Weather is getting more consistent and that will mean more fish.

Now here is my report:

INSHORE:
Black drum and some reds mixed in with them have been biting fresh shrimp in the creeks, the inlets and waterway. Best bite is on the falling tide. A few flounder have been caught, but no major bite yet.

NEAR SHORE:
Bluefish are biting on the high tide near the inlets and along the beaches. You can catch them jigging or trolling. A couple of more water temp degrees and the first wave of Spanish mackerel should arrive.

OFFSHORE:
False albacore and bonito have been reported in the 10 mile area. Kings are still 20-30 miles out.

GULFSTREAM:
Weather permitting, boats making it to the stream have had good catches of wahoo, blackfin tuna and African pompano.

UPCOMING:
As the water creeps up just a bit look for Spanish macs to make their appearance as well as some bonito. While the blues are biting now, look for some bigger fish to move in soon.

Until next time…

LET’S GO FISHING!!!

FLORIDA: Destin, Navarre, Pensacola Florida Inshore Fishing

Friday, February 25th, 2011

It sure looks like it’s going to be an early spring for 2011 here on the Gulf Coast of Florida. For last week and the next weeks forecast we’re averaging 10 degrees above normal. Anybody want to bet on the date that the first Cobia caught? (I’m sticking with March 8th).

With all this warm weather the Speckled Trout bite is not going to be far away from excellent, I’m already catching some nice fish in areas that I usually find them in April. (It’s still all catch and release for specks though). I’ve been on some schools of Red Fish (slot sized fish) that number in the hundreds. It’s just amazing how many Red’s there are in Santa Rosa Sound right now. The water is clear and the fish are hungry, the bait of choice has been the 1/8oz gold spoon.

If you’re fishing around the passes you will be catching male Sheepshead and the bigger Red Fish. It won’t be long before the big female Sheepshead start to show up. It looks like one out of ten fish are males right now.

Out on the beaches, look for smaller schools of Bull Red Fish, they’re there. I have already seen schools of Crevalle Jack’s some of the schools are numbering over fifty fish. There are mounds of bait showing up along the beaches also. All is pointing to a fabulous spring and I can’t wait!!!!!!

Fishing is the eternal Fountain of Youth. – “Herbert Hoover”

I know one thing for sure – You ain’t gonna catch’em sittin on the couch!!

So get out there, take a kid fishing and have a blessed day!

Missing the specks!!!

Well I know the surf is quiet, except for the schools of frigid reds, but i sure miss the specks. I’m hoping that this warmer weather this weekend will intice something to bite in the surf. The last good day i had was the first week of dec. Wore the trout out in the surf off Carolina Beach! Now all i can have fun with is the dogfish and skates, seeing that I’m a shore fisherman.

The conditions are prime for surf reds this weekend, so get out there and FISH!!!

LOUISIANA: South Central Louisiana – Inshore Fishing

Saturday, January 22nd, 2011

It was another good day of fishing yesterday ‘DOWN IN DULARGE’!

Bucky Monteiro was back for round 2 of whacking the trout! He brought Steve Lane from Florida to join in on the fun. Capt Gerald was also aboard (we let him come fish with us since we went in his boat, lol) and we limited out with 100 nice trout in about 2 hours.

We had a great time reeling in fish all morning. It did get a little crowded but everyone was behaving themselves lol. We caught every fish on swimbaits with a very slow retrieve on the bottom in about 6-8 ft of water. Check out the best colors in my photo. The past 5 days have produced big numbers of fish each day and I’m looking forward to more great trips next week if the weather cooperates.

Good luck fishing.

FLORIDA: Jacksonville Area Inshore Fishing

Saturday, January 22nd, 2011

When the weather cooperates, the fishing has been fantastic at times. There has been a great black drum bite going on at the Mayport jetties. The fish have been averaging 8-10 lbs. Remember, you can keep only one per person over 24 inches. I’ve had the best luck using 1/4 blue crab for bait. Redfish are mixed in with the drum and are also feeding up and down the length of the jetties. Reds can also be found in the creeks and along the ICW. They school up in large numbers in the winter. The trick is getting them to bite. Warmer days are best. Use smaller baits, and work them very slowly.

A few trout are around, but the extremely cold water seems to have shut them down a little. The water temperature has been as cold as 46 degrees recently. Yesterday, it warmed to 55 degrees in the creeks, and the fish were biting. Sheepshead, redfish, drum, yellowmouth trout, ringtail porgies, black sea bass, and bluefish are all good cold water fish to target.

If your schedule permits, fish during a warming trend. The fishing can actually be very good in the dead of winter, so give me a call!

Be safe.

N CAROLINA: Carolina Beach Inshore Fishing

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

The redfish bite is still going strong and should continue over the winter months as long as we get into a normal winter weather pattern. We have had some nice days lately with sunny skies and warmer temperatures. This is key this time of year and catching big numbers of reds is a good possibilty when the conditions are right.

The reds are schooled up on the flats and creeks of the lower Cape Fear area. Most of the reds are middle to upper slot fish with a few over slot and small ones mixed in. We are catching most of the reds blindcasting artificials and also picking up a few sightcasting when the winds are light. Fishing mud minnows on light jigheads is also a great way to pick up reds when the fish are finicky.

Hopefully the weather will return to normal and we’ll get some good fishing days in over the next week or two. I should have a good report for the first of Febuary. Check out a few of the photos from some of the recent trips.

FLORIDA: Stuart Area Offshore and Inshore

Friday, January 14th, 2011

The sail fish bite continues to sizzle as each tournament in the area produces record setting numbers of fish released.

Plenty of dolphin and some blackfin tuna are being caught in good numbers. Just south of the St. Lucie Inlet, the mackerel and blue fish bite continues to bend rods. We had fish on every cast using green glass minnow lures. We had one mackerel swung into the boat that had a bluefish clamped halfway up its body. But the best news of the past couple of weeks has been the return of the pompano.

We fished Doc’s goofy jigs just off the surf south of Bathtub Beach and boated some decent sized pompano and whiting. This spot is better on the incoming tide and shuts down on the outgoing tide. Pompano are also being caught around the Stuart Causeway Bridge and the Sailfish flats near the beginning of the outgoing tide. Plenty of jacks and lady fish are also in the mix. Hopefully the cold fronts that we have been going through will decrease and let the water temperature stay around the mid sixties because when it goes below sixty degrees a lot of the fish seek warmer waters.

More later.

FLORIDA: Inshore Fishing – Fort Myers to Boca Grande

Monday, December 20th, 2010

Even though the charters are slower than normal this year I have been fishing several days a week on my own so that I can stay on top of the fishing.

We are already experiencing a colder than normal winter and the water temps are already in the 50’s. That’s colder than some years where the water never dips below 60 degrees. The cold water has pushed a lot of the fish off the flats and into the creeks and canals. Redfish, speckled trout, sheepshead , flounder and pompano are still biting in these areas. I’ve been using live shrimp most of the time but artificial lures are doing well during the middle of the day when the water temps peak for the day.

I’m not a fan of fishing in canals, so i usually look for depressions on the flats and feeder creeks where the water is slightly warmer. The problem is that if you fishing near any canals at all, most of the fish in the area are going to go in them since a canal is a artificial water warmer. I’ve found that the redfish are handling the cold water the best and are still holding on the shallow grass flats the best. Speckled trout are more scattered than they were a month ago but if you hit a school of them you can catch them on every cast. Sheepshead are holding in the passes and in the potholes on the flats. However, they are biting best in the passes. I’m catching a number of flounder each day while targeting the redfish. Most are under the slot but I’ve been getting a few keepers each day.
Fort Myers Fishing Forecast:

The redfish and speckled trout have adjusted to the colder water temps and fishing for them will continue to be good for them between the cold fronts. Fish before the fronts and you’ll do well. Don’t expect to catch much the day after a cold front.

Report from Sweetwater Marina…

The fishing was pretty good today. Most people started catching fish around 1pm. Tomorrow the bite should be around 11am. The fish were going after both plastics and live shrimp.
