FLORIDA: Top-water Plugs have Produced Some Quality Catches

Saturday, July 16th, 2011

Redfish, redfish, and more redfish! We’re catching redfish aboard the Mega-Bite!

I’ve had a lot of trips the past few weeks where my clients didn’t want to go out and catch red snapper, so I said, “No problem; let’s go bow up on some big reds and drag-screaming Spanish.” With the redfish bite so good the past few weeks it has been a lot of fun watching my clients bow up on these fun fighting fish.

It’s no secret that the reds have been showing up in the pass a pretty good bit over the past 6 weeks, but when the bite shuts down in the pass, I’ll go to one of my honey holes where I’ve found some good redfish hanging out. Some of these fish are in the slot and some are big bruisers like the fish I’ve been catching in the pass. Redfish is one of my favorite fish to go after, and it is awesome watching my clients bow up on what is often the biggest fish they’ve ever seen.

Other inshore species that we’ve been catching are Spanish, bluefish and ladyfish. The Spanish have moved into the bay and the bite has been very good.

We’ve caught some nice Spanish in the 4 lb – 5 lb range, which is great light tackle action. Top-water plugs have produced some quality catches, as has slow trolling with spoons and jigs.

I’ve also hit a few of my honey holes in the bay that hold snapper, but the last few times I checked them out, the fish were a bit small. We had still had fun, and didn’t have to go way out into the gulf.

Back to the inshore red fishing. When it comes to catching the reds in the sound and bay, I’ve been using a variety of baits; in deepwater we are using live pinfish and finger mullet, on the flats, we switch over to MirrOlure’s suspending twitch bait Catch 2000 and Catch 200 Jr. and the Top-Dog Jr. I’m also tossing a Berkley Gulp 3″- 4″ shrimp on a 1/4oz jig head when appropriate. Another technique that has put some nice redfish in the boat has been tossing a live pinfish under a popping cork at a few of my honey holes. The reds can’t seem to get enough, and you are almost guaranteed to bow up.

I haven’t been trout fishing much the past two weeks. The couple of times I went, the fish have been kind of small. My clients have put a few nice keepers in the ice chest, but most of my clients want to feel the pull of those big reds, so that’s what we have been targeting for the most part.

I would like to mention the annual fall redfish run, which is only a few months out. This has to be one of my favorite times to fish, because it’s cool outside and the red fishing is outstanding. If you are coming to Pensacola in the fall and want to bow up on one of these monsters, give me a call and I’ll show you a great day on the water.

S CAROLINA: We Have Been Doing Well at Nearshore Wrecks & Artificial Reefs

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011

July has always been the magic date that kicks off our Tarpon season here in the lowcountry of South Carolina.

This year is no exception, as the bait in the form of Menhaden is here in full force. Many folks are unaware of the great Tarpon fishery we have in South Carolina. These fish migrate up the coast from Florida along with the Menhaden, and are available along the beaches, sandbars, and clear up the rivers where they like to take up residence on several of our bridges.

I fished briefly with Capt Danny Rourk the other day, and saw three fish roll near the boat, but never got a jump. We will be after them in full force as the month goes along. This is strictly a deep water live bait fishery, and we have to work around the sharks, but what an exciting moment when the Silver King takes the bait and makes that first fanatical jump.

We fish two or three rods down deep, and one or two on the surface, with live Menhaden. The bite is still fair for Redfish, and the Spanish mackerel and Bluefish are in good numbers off the beach. We have also been doing well at some of our nearshore wrecks and artificial reefs with Black sea bass, Weakfish (Summer trout), Spadefish, and several other species.

GEORGIA: This Seems To Be the Year of the Cut Bait

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011

Hot Summer temps usually mean an ice cold bite, but lately we have seen an exception. The Trout, Redfish, and Flounder have been pretty easy to find and willing to eat.

We finally have some local bait at the marinas, so the high priced Florida bait is gone until next year. It seems that our local bait is either extremely big or extremely small though.

We have mostly targeted Trout with some great success. We have had days where we caught close to 40 keeper Trout and some days with a 16 inch average.

One day that stands out is June 29th. We had 10 year old Talon Mann on board and he boated a 24 1/2 inch Trout! That is a great trophy for a 10 year old.

The Shark fishing at St. Simons Island has been stellar. Fishing behind the shrimp boats with cut Bonito or Ladyfish seems to be the key. We typically fish with live Pogies but this seems to be the year of the cut bait. We have had some Black Tips and Spinners in the 100 to 120 lb. range on most trips.

Don’t let the heat keep you from enjoying fishing in GA, and especially fishing in St. Simons Island, GA!

Cheers from Coastal Georgia Charter Fishing!

OREGON: Quality Sized Keepers are Coming from Tongue Point

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011

With the extension of the catch and keep sturgeon fishery on the lower Columbia through July 31st, opportunity for a productive combo salmon/sturgeon/bottomfishing trip is a rare opportunity. Some quality sized keepers are coming from Tongue Point to Hammond with most anglers scoring on sand shrimp.

Calm seas and mild tides yielded good catches of bottomfish to sunken jetty anglers on Monday. A rough ocean forecast will make this a poor option over the weekend.

Coho salmon season started good for anglers fishing way north of the mouth of the Columbia. Some chinook were in the catches but nice sized coho willingly took herring or anchovies for bait.

Ocean crabbing is poor for keeper sized males.

A big minus tide will make bar crossings treacherous this weekend but beach diggers shouldn’t have any trouble getting a limit of razor clams along Clatsop Beaches. Only a few weeks left before this season closes for a few months.

A few spring chinook are still being caught in Tillamook Bay but the bulk of the fish are in the Trask and Wilson Rivers. The hatchery hole on the Trask closes on June 30th and is filled with fish. Springers are available in other sections of both streams but will be reluctant to bite in the low, clear flows.

The Nestucca is also an option but returns have just been fair this season. Summer steelhead are also available here.

CONNECTICUT: Bass Averaging Eight Pounds

Saturday, June 11th, 2011

This week brought the first consistent numbers of squid in our area.

This also brought a good number of keeper sized bass. Our trips this week were all good with fish averaging eight pounds and several upwards of 15 pounds. All of these were taken on a fly. As long as the bait holds up the migrating bass will stick around.

Both tides fished equally as well. We saw our first schools of bass on top in the inshore waters.

MONTANA: Spring Creeks Have Been Awesome

Friday, June 10th, 2011

Montana’s snowpack is well above average and is coming down fast.

While many rivers are high and muddy, others are fishing very well. Spring creeks have been awesome in late May and June and the pale morning duns are just beginning to show up. Spring creek trout are not as educated this early in the season as they will be by late summer and the weed beds are not too developed yet making nymph fishing easy. Dry fly fishing over the PMD hatch on spring creeks such as DePuy, Nelson, Armstrong, Benhart, Thompson, O’dell and McCoy can be awesome. The Upper Madison above the West Fork continues to fish well.

Visibility doesn’t have to be great on the very upper part of the Madison to produce great fishing and this is a great run off destination. The Lower Madison has also fished well on some days but on others has been poor depending on dam releases and visibility. The Missouri near Wolf Creek continues to fish well and should be dynamite all the way through run off. Trophy stillwaters are a fantastic option in June. Most of these fisheries require rod fees but June is the best month of the year to catch these lunkers without the massive weed beds that build up later in the year.

CALIFORNIA: ‘Four Nuts in a Couple of Skiffs’ Went Out

Wednesday, June 8th, 2011

Keith Fraser of Loch Lomond Bait and Tackle in San Rafael gushed, “Sturgeon fishing is better than fantastic” in San Pablo Bay. On Saturday, in conditions Fraser listed as “Absolutely miserable”, the Morningstar and ‘four nuts in a couple of skiffs’ went out.

By 9:00 a.m., the Morningstar was taking waves over both the port and starboards side of the boat, so they were ready to pull the plug. While one of the anglers was getting ready to reel in to go, a sturgeon was hooked. As the fisherman was fighting the fish, the conditions backed off of bit, so they stayed out for the remainder of the day, and “Everyone on the boat caught a sturgeon by the end of the trip.” The skiffs landed 7 legal sturgeon apiece on Loch Lomond live mud shrimp. Fraser touts mud shrimp as the number one bait with ghost shrimp a close second. Bass fishing has been slow with an ‘occasional’ fish, but conditions will improve this week with the smaller tides. Drifting live shiners should also be go. Fraser said, “Most of the fishermen in our ballpark are now releasing the sturgeon  either because they have exhausted their tags or because they believe it is the right thing to do.” Loch Lomond has frozen mud shrimp in the shop with a shipment of live mud expected this week.

Mud shrimp isn’t the only thing working because Norman Harmon landed a legal sturgeon with a $100.00 tag on Friday using grass shrimp from Leonard’s Bait at Port Sonoma. Joel Sinkay of Leonard’s Bait said three anglers tried to go out this morning but the wind pushed them back to the river mouth. The wind lay down, and they ran out to the area about 1.5 miles east of the Pumphouse for one keeper sturgeon and six others lost in a variety of methods. Sinkay estimates the depth of this area to be around 8 feet on high tide. All of these fish bit Leonard’s grass shrimp. With the large tides, Sinkay has held off shrimping, but he will head out early Tuesday morning and work it hard for the next 10 days before the next series of minus tides. He plans on ‘stuffing the shop’ once again with grass shrimp before the next set of tides.

ALABAMA: No Real Monsters, Just Plenty of Pound Crappie

Tuesday, June 7th, 2011

With my son visiting family, that meant more time on the water for me.

So, I figured I would do a little night fishing by myself.  I launched at Hames Marina and fished for bass ‘til dark.  I caught several fish in the 2 to 3 pound range. All came in from 30 feet deep off of shaky heads and drop shot.  I fished shallower but only found small fish. As dark approached I used the last daylight to hit some secondary points for stripe.  I worked an area with two different size scroungers and worked a couple different techniques.  My hummingbird depth finder looked like the 4th of July. With fish from 20-40 feet, I boated three stripe all around ten pounds and had a 20 plus come off by the boat.  After losing the biggest fish, night set in and I headed to the lights to get some crappie for tomorrow’s lunch.  I put twenty in the cooler and called it a night. No real monsters, just plenty of pound crappie.  So if you interested in fishing Smith Lake day or night, give me a call.

I can put you on the fish.

LOUISIANA: Magic Bait is BURN HACKS flying

Tuesday, June 7th, 2011

Had two boats running with Doug Couvillon, Sonny Brignac and crew.

Nice having Doug and Sonny back on board. Doug’s son is in town from New York and wanted to get on some fish, he brought some friends of his to join in on the action. Found picture perfect conditions at our first stop. Slower start than I expected, but once we found the magic bait is was single, double, and triple BURN HACKS flying!!! LOL We were trying different colors and Sonny started maul draggin them every-cast, we all switched and it was ON!!! Trout were coming from all directions and the other 3 boats in the area were all catching too. For some reason the bite slowed down on us before filling our limit and then shut down completely. We made a few more stops finding fish at almost each stop.

Decided to go hit the marsh where I left the trout biting on Tuesday and had 3 in the boat within the first 8 cast, then no more to be found. Time for reds….Found some pretty water and started sight casting reds. Reds every where swimming by the boat but no hookups. Finally we started to get a few bites and ended up boating 8 reds and 4 flounder and had one red break off. Good times had by all, nothing better than happy customers! Capt Ryan’s crew also had a blast reeling in the specks all morning and catching 14 + reds and a couple bass. Guys ended up with a 120qt full of trout and 120qt full of reds. Lots of fillets for the guys!! Thanks again to Sonny and Doug and to Capt Ryan for running the second boat. Always nice to have good communication, and teamwork on the water.

I look forward to next time guys.

FLORIDA: EP Minnow Patterns in White with Green Backs Did the Trick

Saturday, May 28th, 2011

I had the pleasure of spending the week with two groups of anglers who made the trek to Naples for several days of fly fishing. We fished both mornings and evenings and although the tarpon seemed to go on holiday somewhere else, we managed to get quite a few snook and a few redfish the bend the rods.

Weak tides early in the week made the snook a little less than aggressive during the daylight hours, but Blackwell Smith and his cousin David Patten of Chattanooga had a blast with some sight fishing along the beach of Keewaydin Island. Aside from the sight fishing, we found the fish most active at sunrise and sunset with flurries of feeding fish blasting bait schools near the passes. The dock lights proved to be very productive as usual.

Here is a shot of Blackwell and his wife Dana with a nice fly caught snook after dark…

George Maggini came down with some buddies from Cincinnati for three days at the end of the week and I shared the group with a couple other guides for a mix of fly and spin fishing. Our plan was to try for the tarpon, but as I mentioned before they just didn’t show up in any number this last week. We did have some luck with the snook, jacks and a couple redfish.

George Maggini with a beautiful redfish caught Friday evening before release…

The beach snook were taking small white flies such as DT’s and glass minnow patterns. Along the mangroves, EP minnow patterns in white with green backs did the trick. In clear water along the beach it pays to scale back the shock leader to 20 lb test to draw more strikes from wary fish. A presentation parallel to the beach will get more bites.
