NEW YORK: Fishing is Very Good to Exceptional for Coho Salmon, Brown, Steelhead & Rainbow Trout

Monday, December 12th, 2011

Today is Monday December 12, 2011. Well here we are in the second full week of December and the only place anyone in Orleans County is Ice fishing is in their freezer.

With the mid week temperatures predicted to be in the low 50’s, I wouldn’t be breaking out the ice fishing gear yet.

Fishing on the open waters of the tributaries within Orleans County is at very good to exceptional level for Brown trout, Coho salmon and Steelhead/Rainbow trout fishing. The delayed release of water from the Erie Canal and the rains that we have had over the past week or so is keeping the water levels of all of our tributaries at good to slightly above level. Water clarity remains at a slightly stained state which makes for tremendous tributary fishing. The mid week prediction of more rain means that this trend should continue through at least the end of the year if not longer.

All seems quite on the smaller lakes within the county and the only other positive fishing note seems to be fairly good catches of Perch from the bridges area of the oak all the way North to the Point. This is the time of year that you can always find that stretch of water for you to enjoy with no one else on around to share it with.

Let’s make everyday a great fishing day, right here in Orleans County.

LOUISIANA: Fishing with Swim-baits, the Cocodrie Cocahoe in Purple/Chart

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011

Power-Pole Style Anchor System
Good times today having Tony Breaux, and Brayden Breaux on-board.

Slow start at our first stop picking away at a few trout and one flounder. Made a couple moves and found a good concentration of trout and some reds mixed in. We commenced to Burn Hacking them slowly but surely!!! We put together a nice mess of fish as usual, but it was not a fast and furious bite like on Wednesday.

Most fish fell victim to swim-baits, the Cocodrie Cocahoe in purple/Chart held its own at the end, with the Shiney Hineys catching a few trout and reds also.

Thanks again guys for a great day and even better company!

N CAROLINA: Do You Ever Feel Like Everything is Just Perfect?

Tuesday, November 29th, 2011

Do you ever feel like everything is just perfect?

Well on this particular morning that was the feeling I had. On board were three customers that were so excited about running 40+miles offshore to go King mackerel Fishing. This is the part that wasnt so perfect. On our way to the fishing grounds I had a bucket full of cigar minnows thawing out for the ride out. Well we arrived to our destination which was a spot called the Snapper Charlie and can be a very productive place to limit out on King mackerel this time of year. As I started to get the rods out and started baiting the hooks, there was no bucket or any baits in the boat.. My guess is they flew out on the ride out..

To this day I dont understand what happened to them..

So as im looking around the boat for some sibiki rigs, I decide to call Wally Traya who runs charters out of Oak Island, and it wasnt long he found somebody on the radio who had an extra box of minnows. Man what a relief that was. I give a Special thanks to wally and to Jim who runs the STIX SLINGER out of Little River, SC. If it wasnt for those two it would have been a very weird day trying to fish with no bait.. Long story short we got the bait and had a 9 fish limit by 10:am and ended up releasing 15 more until we ran out of bait. The seas were calm and it made for a great ride home with a cooler slam full of fish.

Good weather, Happy customers, and a safe trip home makes for a perfect day.

One lesson to all fisherman who are offshore, treat them as if they are family and help out if possible..

MONTANA: Fishing the Runs out of Lakes can be Great this Time of Year

Monday, November 7th, 2011

As we move into the late fall there is still some very good fishing opportunities to be had.

The morning fishing is pretty tough with the colder temperatures, but the late morning and afternoon hours have been very productive. The baetis hatch is still coming off but will be winding down by the end of November.

Browns are spawning, or will be spawning soon and have moved upriver and into larger tributaries. Fishing some of the runs out of lakes can be a great bet this time of year.

The spring creeks are now on winter rates and are still fishing great. Miles guided at DePuy spring creek the other day and they had consistent action and were able to throw dries over the baetis hatch for about two and a half hours after lunch. The best bets right now are probably the Upper and Lower Madison, Gallatin and Spring Creeks. Some of the options in Yellowstone Park are also fishing well such as the Madison, Gardiner and the Lewis Channel.

In general, the best fishing will be with nymph rigs before and after the hatch. On the spring creeks and occassionally on the other fisheries you can also throw baetis dries and emergers during the hatch. Browns are still hitting streamers but as the water temps drop you need to slow the retrieve and get closer to the bottom.

LOUISIANA: Full Moon as Being the Time When Fishing Just Goes Off the Charts

Monday, October 17th, 2011

When the Mississippi River starts getting lower, the water gets cooler and the river current starts getting slower in October, Capt. Larry Averitt (225.268.9616) says the specks and reds start moving up the river and feeding better.

“They move into the marsh and start feeding for the wintertime,” Averitt said. “They move in during October, and you can usually point to the full moon in October as the time you want to start getting back on the water.

“I’ve been guiding down here 15 or 20 years, and I see that full moon as being the time when fishing just goes off the charts. ”

Averitt revealed that he likes to fish Main Pass a lot during October, and that he prefers bouncing jigs off the bottom and Carolina-rigging live shrimp. So the fishing is a little bit different because he’s not fishing under a cork as much as he did back in the summer.

“Basically the fishing returns to what we call the inside,” Averitt explained. “Starting in October, you don’t have to run outside the marsh and fish the islands or rig structures. And the good thing is that you can go back to artificial baits. You can still use live shrimp, but it’s kind of like the springtime because you don’t have to.”

And one of the great things about fishing during October, according to Averitt, is that you can limit out on redfish and speckled trout sitting on the same spot without ever having to pull in your anchor.

“The places like the points we fished out in Customhouse Bay today will be great places to limit out without moving,” Averitt said. “That’s the reason that October is my favorite time to fish out of Venice.”

NEW MEXICO: San Juan River – Good Fishing with #24-26 black bodied pearl Krystal flash wing midge

Tuesday, September 6th, 2011

As of this morning the river flow is at 800cfs.

The water is clear with visibility around 5-6. The water is being released from the spillway side. The fishing has been good.
The upper areas have been good fishing with a small #24-26 black bodied pearl Krystal flash wing midge. #22-24 red larva’s early am. Black and gray bodied #22 Marks 3m midge, or black and gray big macs.

The upper braids has been fishing good with #24-26 dark gray or black bodied pupa’s, and the above patterns.

The main channel is fishing ok. The main current is coming down the north bank all the way to the T-hole. This is a lot of current, the fish are along the edges of the current lines, along the fast water and slow water seams. Be careful when wading, or crossing the river. I suggest using a walking staff or stick. The above patterns, and brown shammy or San Juan worm, #20-22 gray rs2 foam wings, have all been working.

From Texas hole down to the Crusher hole take out has been fishing good to great. As of late, what has been working for me is a #20-22 black and gray 3M, {mark’s magic midge}, black and gray big mac. and a gray rs2 foam wing. My client did very well yesterday. Dry fly action has been midge cluster pattern in the upper areas. There has been a decent beatis hatch from T-hole down to the quality water take-out. #22 Gray Adams sparkle dun or a parachute Adams should do the trick.

Navajo lake has been fishing good. Wacky worms or beaver tails, fished at 18-25 feet near the rocks has been working good for 2-3 lb. Smallies. The night temps are just starting to drop. The kokanee salmon bite has slowed down with the spawn starting less than a month away.

OHIO: Lake Erie – Fish Have Been Caught by Trolling with Divers & Spoons

Thursday, August 11th, 2011

Western Basin

Walleye fishing was good over the past week.  Most reports came from the reef complex and from the turnaround buoy of the Toledo shipping channel to West Sister Island.  Fish have been caught by trolling with divers and spoons, and also on inline weights with worm harnesses.  Fish can also be caught by casting mayfly rigs or drifting with bottom bouncers and worm harnesses.

Yellow perch fishing continues to be good over the past week in the western basin.  The best areas have been the turnaround buoy of the Toledo shipping channel, SE of Kelley’s Island, S of Green Island, and N of Ballast Island.  Anglers are using spreaders with shiners fished near the bottom.

Bass fishermen continue to have good catches of largemouth bass around the harbors and nearshore areas from Catawba to Marblehead.  Smallmouth bass have been caught around South Bass Island and Middle Bass Island.

Central Basin

Walleye Very good fishing has been reported 70-74’ NE of Geneva and 70-74’ N-NW of Ashtabula.  Anglers are using jet divers and dipsy divers with purple, blue, pink, silver and black spoons.  Anglers are also using wireline with stick baits.

Yellow perch fishing has been fair off of the Huron River mouth, in 26’ to 30’ of water off of Cranberry Creek, and off of the condos between Vermilion and Beaver Creek.  Very good fishing has been reported 42-46’ of N-NE of Edgewater Park, 40-48’ NE of Wildwood Park, 42-47’ N-NW of Fairport and 48′ NE of Conneaut.  Perch spreaders with shiners fished near the bottom produces the most fish.  Fish the bottom and keep the bait moving.  Mornings and evenings have been best.

Smallmouth bass fishing has been very good in 15 to 25’ around harbor areas in Cleveland, Fairport Harbor, Geneva, Ashtabula and Conneaut.  Fish are being caught on crayfish and leeches, dark green and red tube jigs, blade baits and crank baits.

Steelhead trout fishing has been fair while trolling for walleye at the same locations listed above for walleye off Geneva and Ashtabula.

White Bass   Anglers are catching white bass off the Eastlake CEI breakwall and Mentor Headlands breakwall.  Anglers are using agitators with white jigs and twister tails.  Mornings and evenings are the best times.  For boat anglers, look for gulls feeding on schools of shiners at the surface.  The white bass will be below the shiners.

The water temperature is 77 degrees off of Toledo and 77 degrees off of Cleveland according to the nearshore marine forecast.

LOUISIANA: Big Girls Came Out to Play Today Down in Dularge

Sunday, August 7th, 2011

Good times again today Down in Dularge!!

Had Jack Whitehead, Michael Whitehead, and Evan Trapp back on-board today. Trout is what we had on the agenda, and trout is what we caught!! BIG ones at that!!

Big girls came out to play today Down in Dularge and all on plastic. When our bite slowed we headed to a couple ponds to look for reds. No tide movement made it tough as the reds would follow the bait to the boat then turn. We boxed two and one bass, lost three. Guys threw in the towel due to the heat.

Thanks guys for another day in paradise!!

NEW MEXICO: Fish Being Landed with Worms, Spinners & Woolly Buggers

Tuesday, July 19th, 2011

Chama River
Upper section flow is 40 cfs. and below El Vado, the flow is 766 cfs. Fishing is fair in the upper Chama with some bigger rainbows reported being taken in and around Chama. Fish are being landed with worms, spinners, woolly buggers and various bead-headed nymphs. Below El Vado, trout fishing is good for rainbows up to 20 inches and browns up to 18 inches. Panther Martins and Rapalas are working for the browns and rainbows.

San Juan River

Upper section – Catch and Release flow is 499 cfs. Midges are hatching all day long. At the moment they are very small, midge pupa and larvae, size 22 to 28, chocolate, dark grey, cream and olive have been best. The hatch is strongest from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Try fishing BWO’s from 2 p.m. to about 5 p.m. Dark gray, brown and olive have been the best colors in a size 20 and 22. Both dry and wet patterns. Back to midges in the evenings. Black and brown have been killing it! Caddis are showing up in the evenings from 7 p.m. to dark. You will find the best activity through the bait water up to Simon canyon. Small brown caddis are the best, size 20 and 22. PMD’s are all over the lower river in the afternoons from 1 to 5 p.m. They are starting to show up on the upper river should be great in a couple of weeks! Hoppers and ants are working well too! Bunny leaches are great attractors in brown, black, purple, and white. If all else fails try fishing big foam patterns especially in the morning.

Lower section – Open waters, fishing is good with night crawlers, salmon eggs and the same flies as for the upper section. Some reports say the lower section is fishing a well as the upper quality waters. The lower section was stocked with 1,000 rainbow trout last week.

Abiquiu Lake
Fishing is slow for walleye with a few smaller sized fish being caught. Some small mouth bass have been reported but at best it is hit and miss for them. Catfish are reported as slow but a few bigger fish have been taken in the coves with stink bait and liver. No report on other species.

Heron Lake
Fishing is fair for trout from the bank and trolling. Most success has been by Willow Creek along the channel into the lake. Power Bait, worms and spinners tipped with corn are working well. Salmon fishing is good when trolling double whammies, Kokanee Killers and Panther Martin’s tipped with corn in 18 to 25 feet of water.

Jackson Lake
Trout fishing is reported as fair to good using Power Bait, salmon eggs and worms. Spinners with gold blades are reported working well on the backside of the lake.

Lake Farmington
Trout fishing is reported as fair by the spillway using Power Bait, salmon eggs and worms.

Navajo Lake
Fishing for smallmouth bass is very good in the coves with almost any method catching fish. The largemouth bass have also turned on and are starting to hit with both aggressive bites and feeding strikes. Both species are being caught on soft plastics, jerk baits or crank baits Salmon are starting to bite when using Rapalas or Kokanee Killers in 40 feet of water. Best fishing is from the dam to Francis Canyon.  Northern pike are hitting all over the lake. Try using xr-14 or f-18 lures in the afternoons and top water gear is working in the mornings.

GEORGIA: The Fishing Gods Were Smiling

Tuesday, July 19th, 2011

With Davis’ heavy workload at the marina and his son A.D. here for a short time until he returns to Kentucky, we found a short window to get a trip in Thursday afternoon.

With the full moon looming and the tides being what we were dealt, we headed out with fingers crossed. As it turned out, the fishing gods were smiling on A.D. and Pop. We enjoyed a good bite the entire trip with a good mix of short slot and over reds. A.D. was a little less than thrilled about chunkin back the big ones but once the reason was explained, he was very understanding. We got a pleasant surprise when trout showed up in our redfish hole as well, and A.D. was able to get six good keepers for dinner. Had a brief encounter with some feeding tarpon, but no takers. A.D. and Davis did the shark thing as well, with a nice one close to boat side that broke off before we could take a good pic. The next shark dumped the spool and we never got a look. Sorry fellas, Capt error for sure as we’re going to have to add a couple hundred more yards for some of those toothy critters.

Thanks Davis and A.D., I had a large time!
