OHIO: Lake Erie – Best Fishing Around West Sister Island

Friday, August 17th, 2012

Walleye fishing has been fair in the western basin. The best fishing has been around West Sister Island. Trollers have been using worm harnesses with inline weights or divers, and also divers with spoons.

Yellow perch fishing is improving and has been best near buoy 13 of the Toledo shipping channel, N of “B” can of the Camp Perry firing range, between Green and Rattlesnake Islands, and N of Cedar Point. Perch spreaders with shiners fished near the bottom produce the most fish.

GEORGIA: Lake Lanier – Best Fishing has been South of Brown’s Bridge

Monday, August 6th, 2012

Striper fishing on Lanier has been great.

Some days we have been catching some really good numbers. The days we are catching numbers, the fish are out over the channel feeding on schools of bait 30 feet down on a 90-120 foot bottom. When the fish are in this pattern the schools of fish we are finding are huge. Double hook ups are a common occurrence this time of year. Knowing where the tree lines are and schools of bait are are critical to finding these fish. On most days this week the fish are more active in the afternoon. However, we are still catching them in the morning. The fish are in different places making them slightly more difficult to catch. The down-line bite has been hard to beat. But the lead core bite is a close second. 6-9 colors with a 1 oz flash foil buck tail has been producing well for us. Fishing should be at it’s best through August. The best fishing has been south of browns bridge to the dam.

Spotted bass fishing has also been great on brush piles in 20-30 feet of water. The drop shot rig has been producing some great numbers of spots for us. Catching Spots on ultra light spinning gear is a lot of fun.

OREGON: Best Fishing is Taking Place from Portland to Longview

Tuesday, September 6th, 2011

Willamette Valley/Metro

Although inconsistent day to day, the wobbler fishery around Portland is underway. The best fishing is taking place from Portland to Longview with some hoglines consistently out-producing others. Veteran anglers expected better results on the current tide series but better action is likely to happen next week. Action is reported as good at the mouth of the Cowlitz.

The gorge is predictably slow for salmon, even though thousands are pouring over the dam daily. Summer steelhead counts are beginning to slow and so is the action. Larger, “B” run fish will begin to make a showing but warmer water temperatures keep these quality fish from biting on the mainstem.

Water temperatures at Willamette Falls is approaching 72 degrees. Fish upriver for bass which is good; trout success is only fair.

Trout fishing is worthwhile on the McKenzie with Caddis the primary hatch. Summer steelhead are available but most springers are dark.

Despite indications otherwise, North Santiam flows will increase starting September 1st. Salmon are due to spawn.

The Clackamas is low, clear and very slow for fishing. Coho may begin to show at the mouth and lower drifts although Clackamas coho are notoriously known for not biting all that well this far up the system.

A few steelhead are being taken from the milky waters of the Sandy where most chinook are past their prime. Coho should begin to show with the peak likely in early October. Returning numbers are not forecasted to be large however.
