AUSTRALIA: Kayak Fishing

Tuesday, September 11th, 2012

This week Craig Coughlan is filling in for Rob Paxevanos and Craig takes a look at Kayak Fishing Tournaments which are undergoing a surge in popularity.

Kayaks are a popular fishing platform for many of today’s anglers and with the large numbers of kayak anglers in the sport, the introduction of kayak fishing tournaments was inevitable.

In 2009, the first kayak only tournament series was introduced in Sydney, the Daiwa/Hobie BREAM kayak series, and it was a huge success.

Since 2009 the series has grown significantly to a 18 round series, covering all states in Australia except the Northern Territory plus a big 2 day Grand Final event.

In addition to the Daiwa/Hobie series, there is the Squidgies Southern Bream Series which covers waters from Sydney and south to Mallacoota in Victoria.

I have fished many of these events from both series since their introduction with mixed results and enjoyed every one of them. They attract anglers from near and far, making them a great social experience, and I met lots of people and made some good friends along the way.

The idea is to catch, and present 3 of your best Bream to the weigh master, and the heaviest bag wins. All fish must be presented alive at the weigh in and all fish must be released immediately after weighing.

Catching 3 bream within the required time period certainly sounds easy to me, and sometimes it is but on other days things just don’t go as planned.

Tournament fishing can be a real test of one’s patience and composure, a wrong decision could decide your whole day. In a boat, if you choose your destination and it is not fishing well you can simply fire up the outboard and head off to your next hot spot quickly. But in a kayak, obviously things move a lot slower so it is easy to waste a lot of time jumping between spots. Choosing your location to suit your preferred style of fishing for each event is important.

South Coast anglers have lots of events to choose from including those on the Clyde River, St.Georges Basin and the Shoalhaven river. These are an easy trip even for the masses that head down the mountain from Canberra, and it’s from these 3 venue’s I have experienced my best results with plenty of top 5 finishes plus a lonely win in my local, the Clyde river.

In Febuary this year, round 5 of the Daiwa/Hobie series was held at St.Georges Basin where I was lucky enough to scrape into 5th position earning me a spot in this years Grand Final, to be held at the Bemm River, Victoria in November where we all fish from identical kayaks to get us all on a level playing field.

The last time i was given the opportunity to fish a Grand Final was in 2010 in Forster NSW, and it was an experience i will never forget, and after missing out on last years Grand Final my only goal for this year was to qualify, so it was of course a huge relief to achieve that so early in the series to take the weight off my shoulders.

Anyone who fishes from a kayak, from the keenest of anglers to amateurs are welcomed into these events and I highly recommend giving it a go; they are a heap of fun and a great way to improve your skills. These event have given me the motivation I needed to visit some great fisheries along the East Coast that have been on my ‘to do list’ for a long time.

See you on the water

Craig Coughlan

AUSTRALIA: Lake Tyres – Bream Amongst the Snags on the Edges

Friday, August 17th, 2012

Brad and Mike Hodges spent last weekend down at Lake Tyres in search of bream on lures. Arriving just prior to lunch on Friday, Brad says it was slow going initially, until they found a few fish amongst the snags on the edges.

The following day produced the hottest bite with most fish succumbing to Berkley 3B Puppy-Dog hard bodied minnows. Considering it is the middle of winter and the water temperature just 10-11 degrees, the fishing was exceptional.

Though the bite slowed somewhat into the final morning, more than seventy bream were caught and released throughout the weekend.

AUSTRALIA: MORE Mud Crabs ON THE SOUTH COAST

Friday, February 17th, 2012

Scores of smiley mackerel and frog mouth pilchards have invaded the Clyde River over the last couple of weeks.

A lot of them will probably get flushed out with the recent rain and more heavy rain predicted, but the baitfish will be back with predators in tow when the water clears.

In the meantime there has been some less expected patterns. A couple of weeks ago Rob Fish from Clyde River House Boats reported that his customers caught some Mud Crabs to 1.5 kilos. This sparked a lot of interest, so I rang Rob and found out some more.

For a start the crabs were not even caught in pots, just on standard flathead fishing lines! Further more the family who caught the Mud Crabs caught 5 that trip, and the biggest, nicknamed ‘Hercules’ actually weighed 1.9 kilos, not 1.5 kilos as was first reported…it was big enough to feed the whole family!

As it turns out, Mud Crabs have been a bit more common on the Clyde than usual this season, especially up around Nelligen where experienced ‘crabbers’ have been bagging out at times with their crab pots. But newcomers catching 5 without a pot-wow!

Global warming? The east Australian currents in a La Nina year? Or what else? Who cares-this is a big bonus for locals and tourists alike, lets hope they still happen when the run off clears.

BREAM KING

Captain Kev from Wilderness Fishing is Mallacootas undisputed king of fishing on lure, so when he says there is some absolutely massive bream, flathead and whiting available at Mallacoota, you better believe it.

But that doesn’t they are easy to catch them-many Mallacoota anglers I spoke too missed out! He mumbled something about salinity, weather cycles and slow retrieves. Sounds like it’s time again for me to get down and find out just what new techniques he has pioneered on this amazing system. Can’t wait.

PLASTICS AIN’T PLASTICS

You may have read that the Storm Pro Shad is one of my favorite jewfish, flathead, Snapper and Murray Cod soft plastics because the tail wriggles seductively even when the lure is just moving along at a snails pace, but there is much more to it.

I’d been playing around with some different plastics again to see what else is new on the market, but found that the super soft varieties that wiggle well at slow speed don’t stay on the hook that well. Further more few have the baby Tailor shaped profile-and baby Tailor are our most common estuary bait fish thru much of the year.

Yet another obstacle was a finding an ultra thin body that permits hookups even when the lure fouls on the bite, as often happens. Another thing I look for is prominent ribs to hold scent in the body.

The Pro Shad has none of the above problems, yet all of the positive attributes, and this is why I came back to it yet again-it is still the best soft plastic of its type on the market.

Meanwhile out on the coast line Adam Giatras and friends evened the score with a few big jewfish when they speared two honkers one of which was well over the 1.4 meter mark! Now before line anglers say hey-that’s cheating, consider this-Adam is an experienced spear fisho, and has been trying to get his first jewfish for over 5 years!

All this is off the back of the bonafide 100 pound jewfish caught near the Shoalhaven River mouth a few weeks back. Seems like there is no end to the resurgence of this species. Punch my name into the You Tube Search Bar and you can see some local video footage of this amazing species.

SMITH AND DAWSON

I noticed that when I say it this heading it has a Clint Eastwood ‘Smith and Wesson’ ring to it. That’s because when locals Ray Smith and Dean Dawson fish together off the rocks the fish are in the firing line.

The duo hit pretty point and hooked an 8 foot Hammerhead Shark on Rays new Okuma Salina 2 Spin Reel. The fight was gun smoking hot-these sharks will make a similar sized marlin blush in the combined speed and power department. After nearly being spooled twice Ray got the beast in and tagged it. A shark this big off the rocks on spin gear-that’s something!

See you on the water

AUSTRALIA: Gossy is Well into Becoming Adept at Catching Flattys on Lures

Monday, November 7th, 2011

ESTUARIES

Well known and much loved radio identity and voice artist Dave Gosper has got right into his fishing and hits the water with his kayak when ever he can. Dave helped me with some voice lessons when I started my media career many moons ago, and I return the favor with some fishing advice when possible.

Gossy is well into becoming adept at catching flattys on lures, but has been keen on some bream as well so I suggested a switch to bait along with some pointers as per the chapter on the topic in my instructional DVD.

He returned all smiles with having caught a couple of bream, and, funny as ever, said that they were so big his wife still believes he detoured to the fish shop on the way home. I believe him…the smile was way too big to be a fib.

AN AUSSIE CALLED DODDY LAUGHS ALL THE WAY TO SOME MASSIVE Snapper

A few years back I fished with a bloke called Doddy from Port Lincoln in South Australia. Not only is this guy a freakish Fisherman, he is a real character with a contagious laugh.

Everyone on that trip from my producer, Camera Man, super model guest (Erin McNaught), myself and the rest of the gang will never forget the fishing and Doddys entertaining ability. Not surprisingly it was one of our best rating episodes ever.

I made him promise me that if he ever starts a charter boat he should call me, and that’s exactly what he’s gone and done.

A superb 9m cat ensures that when you catch those massive meter plus Snapper, King George Whiting, bluefish tuna and other fish he’s famous for, you will be doing it in comfort and style.

And I bet you all you like you won’t return with out a hint of his laugh in your own laugh. He doesn’t have a web site just yet, he’s one of those hidden gems that is harder to find, but you can find him on his mobile: 0428 630 253. Highly recommended fishing action and entertainment all rolled into one.

SNOWIES

Lakes Jindabyne and Eucumbene are fishing well on all the usual techniques, but a floating artificial dough bait tipped with scrub worms or bardi grub to help keep the dough bait from coming off is by far the best option for both numbers of medium sized rainbow and some XL sized browns.

Fished using a 14 gram running sinker rig, and the all important size 12 hook all via a nice light 3 kilo glo tip outfit and you are in for some real fun.

Interestingly, the water level drop in Lake Jindabyne that was used to help flush the Snowy River below has meant even better fishing for some observant anglers.

Mike Nicholls fished Hatchery Bay and reported that in areas the weed bands around the edges have been compressed from 30 meters wide down to around 5 meters wide. This has concentrated food and trout, and if you can find this habitat the fishing is exceptional.

Mike had his best polarizing sessions ever spotting on average around 5 big browns every hour or so, but as is sometimes the case they were hard to tempt on fly. While modern bait fishing strategies is bringing more of these fish undone, Mike has decided to continue chasing them on fly purely for the challenge factor.

Meanwhile the Eucumbene and Thredbo Rivers are still producing a reasonable numbers of Rainbow Trout along with the occasional brown as well.

With caddis hatches, flying ant falls and other insect activity occurring the rivers have come alive with rising fish at times and fly anglers lucky enough to be there at the time are getting some good sport.

For lure anglers on the streams there is a cool new twist on an old favorite. Friends of mine have been using the new Vibrax Glo in the Dark Spinners with great results on the rivers very early and late in the day and even into the dark. But to add to this ‘glowing report’, these lures now have a specialized two part main body which not only casts very well, it eliminates line twist which up to now has been a problem with these types of lures.

See you on the water.

Rob Paxevanos

AUSTRALIA: Williamstown To Werribee – Landed an Elephant Fish

Monday, October 24th, 2011

Ben and James Laverty shot out off Williamstown last Friday morning in search of Snapper. Setting out a berley trail and a spread of baits including pilchards and garfish along the 17m line produced a few Snapper. According to James, the bites were timid, but the action increased on the change of tide. Moving in to 15m of water also resulted in a few more Snapper averaging 55 to 60 centimetres.

Fishing in 10m of water towards Werribee South off Portarlington, Kevin Warwick and his son, Thomas, landed eight Snapper to 4.5kg and a surprise Elephant Fish during their first trip for the season. Kevin’s workmates, Binh and Ramez were also amongst the action with rods buckling almost simultaneously on the low tide change. All fish were caught on whole pilchards.

East of the Yarra River, Frank De Luca headed out off Brighton on Tuesday afternoon and almost immediately sounded up masses of Snapper in 14m of water. Once the baits were in the water, it didn’t take for a few fish to oblige with Snapper of 2.5 to 4 kg taken on squid and pilchards. Frank mentioned that the last of both the ebb and flood tides seems to be peak feeding period.

It was a similar scenario last Thursday evening where Snapper were again on the chew at Brighton, but this time in just 5m of water. Interestingly, after examining the stomach contents of a few fish kept for the table, Frank and his fishing buddy, David Gatt, noticed that they were all full of sea urchins.

Kayak fishing enthusiast, Richard Linossi, says it has been hard core fishing in the shallows off Ricketts Point and Blackrock, with some sessions yielding catch and release bags of 30 to 40 Snapper, averaging 1.3 to 3.5kg, on lures and soft plastics. A range of artificials including worm and baitfish profile soft plastics as well as various blades and vibes have been successful.

AUSTRALIA: Lysaghts – Excellent reports of early season Snapper

Monday, September 12th, 2011

CORINELLA:

Customers Steve and Boney fished the middle spit for squid during the week. The boys later headed to Elizabeth Island on dusk in search of gummies. They landed a cracker gummy that tipped the scales past 25kg. After a few quick snaps the big girl was released with no harm done. It was taken on yakka. They also got a nice 4kg fish and a few ripper squid. Great reports guys and awesome fish.

LYSAGHTS:

Excellent reports of early season Snapper have fired up this week with great fishing had off Lysaghts. Customers Pat and Paul fished on Thursday to land 2 beautiful Snapper ranging from 2kg – 3.5kg. Both fish were taken on pilchards.

Greg and Patrick fished in 12m of water off Lysaghts on Wednesday and caught 2 ripper Snapper as well. Both weighed about 2kg. Along with the Snapper they landed some thumper couta that were some of the biggest couta we have seen all year. All fish were caught on squid and pilchard baits.

FLINDERS:

As the season rolls on so does this fantastic squid fishing. Reports are coming in thick and fast and doesn’t look like slowing down. Regular customer and gun angler Danny Manning fished the pier on Monday and landed 4 crackers with the biggest going a touch over 2kg. He reports that a few guys were getting them on baited silver whiting jigs under floats but the most effective way was to cast 3.5 sized jigs and really give them a rip. The squid couldn’t get enough of it.

Drifting over the weedbeds in the boat has been successful to with most guys managing to pick up a couple of squid also.
