ARKANSAS: Prespawn Time is Here

Monday, October 15th, 2012

Prespawn time is here.

There is always great fishing on the White River what a great day!

The White River has had excellent fishing conditions. The lake has been staying just below normal winter pool level and the generator flow has been varying most days. Having a guide is key to catching those memories for a lifetime. When the generators do come on, take advantage of the rise it creates a very good bite for the Rouges, Spoons, Roster Tails, and other artificial baits. Trophy Browns are being caught at night when the generators are shut down. Come see me for details on this method. Don’t be bashful give us a call have a memorable experience with Big Phil’s Guide Service. Great fish are being caught right now. There is no better time to go on a guide trip than right now. The weather is changing but the fish are biting. If you catch a trophy fish we as guides prefer to keep the fish in the river so others can enjoy the experience of catching larger fish. A replica mount lasts longer and is no more expensive than a regular mount and it keeps trophy fish in the river for others to enjoy.

Please promote catch and release.

Please be aware of your trash. Don’t let it float down river. If you do see some please if possible pick it up.

Thanks

ARKANSAS: Bass are Eating Out on Deep, Long Points

Friday, August 10th, 2012

The surface temperature is 87-91 degrees.

Hybrid and white bass will bite pretty well if the wind is blowing strongly or generation is going on. Try top-water baits, in-line spinners, spoons and swim baits (in-line spinners seem to be working best). Look for the bait and the fish will be close.

Bass are eating out on deep, long points on the Arkansas Claw and Texas-rigged worms, Flukes and top-water baits working shallow, and a jighead worm working in the mid-depths.

Walleye are suspended in 30-35 feet of water, eating crankbaits and night crawlers.

Bream are shallow on beds and eating crickets, night crawlers and small crankbaits.

The crappie action has slowed somewhat; try minnows on jigheads around brush in 15-35 feet of water.

Catfishing is still going well all over the lake.

ARKANSAS: Throw Topwater Baits Early for Bass

Tuesday, July 24th, 2012

With the extreme heat and no rain the water temp is in the upper 80’s and the lake level is 547.5.

There are still a lot of fish down 20ft.-30ft. And deeper.

Most of the shallow fish are whites and bass while the deeper fish are usually hybrids and stripers. We need some rain to get the bite to get better. The weatherman says we are supposed to get some rain later this coming week. I hope he is right.

Throw topwater baits early for the bass chasing bait to the surface and then you can use a jig, dropshot,Carolina rig or drop a spoon.

If you are after the stripers they are moving around a lot and when you find them get your bait down to them in the water column. You need to be patient as the bite has been slow.

ARKANSAS: Brown Trout are still eating Sculpins as well as Shrimp

Tuesday, May 1st, 2012

The stretch of water from the White hole to Buffalo City has been exceptionally good for good sized Brown and Rainbow Trout, due to the steady flow of 3 or more units coming out of Bull Shoals Dam. We are also seeing alot of Golden Trout, which were just stocked in a small number last year. Brown Trout are still eating Sculpins well, as well as Shrimp. Berkely Bubblegum worms are working well on both Browns and Rainbows.

Cotter Fishing Forecast

With no visible end to the steady flow of water out of Bull Shoals Dam, the fishing will continue to get better and better, as the water temperatures will remain steady. dragging the aforementioned baits near known structure will produce some really good quality fish, and good quantities of them.

ARKANSAS: Spoons, Grubs, Swim baits and Live Bait are the Best

Friday, February 17th, 2012

Norfork Lake level is 552.5 and dropping slowly with a surface temperature of 45 degrees and it, too, is dropping slowly.

A cold front just came through leaving the area with its coolest temperatures of the year. Creeks are stained and are a perfect color for fishing. That’s where most of the fish are.

Not a lot has changed since the last report except more stripers are being caught. There are several schooling fish just inside the mouths of creeks feeding on the shad. These schools contain bass, hybrid and stripers. You will not know what it is until it hits.

Crappie are on brush and moving from one pile to another. They go shallow at dusk. There are some very nice fish being caught everyday. I have not caught any walleye for a few days but I do not run the whole lake. Harvey works the north end of the lake, Steve works the middle and Bink works the south. Spoons, grubs, swim baits and live bait are the best.

Jerk bait fishing is coming soon.

ARKANSAS: Greer’s Ferry – topwater bite good on Worms, Jigs & C-riged Lizards

Thursday, August 18th, 2011

The water level at Greers ferry is at 462.56 and falling that is 1.53 feet above normal pool.

The hybrids and white bass are back to eating better than they have been due to the recent rain and cooler water temps and more oxygen , use topwater baits ,in-line spinners, grubs, swimbaits as well as spoons, find the bait and the fish will be close by, and just be patient and you can catch some.

The bream bite is good shallow as the full moon spawn is over and they are guarding the young and eating crawlers, catalpa worms, crickets, crankbaits and topwater baits shallow as out to 27 feet of water

The recent rains should help the walleye bite, try crawlers dragged on jighead and try a drop shot rig, with crawlers on in 23-48 feet of water.

Catfish are still good all over the lake as most bait at a lot of depths will work.

Crappie is suspended in pole timber in 15-25 feet over 60-100 feet of water and will eat jig and jigs tipped with minnows

Bass fishing is good shallow, they are up chasing bream and the topwater bite is good as well as the deeper bite, on worms ,jigs and c-riged lizards  from 15 feet out to 50

ARKANSAS: White Bass, Kentucky Bass & Largemouth Bass Schooling in Mud Lake

Thursday, August 4th, 2011

It is HOT and Largemouth Bass are very lethargic during mid day, best early and late and bite shuts off during the heat of mid-day.

The bite over the past week, has become much more seasonal with continued increase of surface temperatures, reduced current in Little River, and virtually non-existent during the hottest mid-day part of these 100+ days.

White bass, Kentucky bass, and Largemouth Bass, were schooling in Mud Lake, Horseshoe Lake, Hurricane Creek, and McGuire Lake oxbows over the past week between 6-9am chasing large pods of threadfin shad.

Surface temps were consistent over the past week’s daytime highs, and are currently ranging 85 F early to 91 F later in the afternoon hours, depending on rain, wind, incoming fresh water, location and time of day.  Call the USACE for lake level daily updates, Little River current, discharge release, and tail water levels.

Lake level as of Monday 01 August, is 255.80 mfsl, and slowly falling, which is 41″ below normal due to four foot drawdown conditions.  Normal consv. pool is 259.20 feet.  The USACE has reduced the total discharge to 348CFS (cubic feet/ second) with 5 gates open at 1 foot.  The tailwater level as of Monday was 225.39 mfsl.  Clarity on main lake is good.  Visibility is currently ranging approx 12-15 inches in the River depending on location.  The oxbow’s clarity are much improved, slight stain, but much better and ranging approx 3-5 feet visibility depending on location.  Water quality improving lake-wide, due to recent more normal weather patterns, reduced wind, and virtually no incoming rain or thunderstorms.  Clarity and visibility can change dramatically on Millwood in just a few hours with high winds.

The final of three, successive, four-foot drawdowns are in progress, and scheduled to run through mid February 2012.  These four foot drawdowns over the past 3 years have been deemed a huge success by fishermen and residents of the lake by helping eliminating unwanted vegetation and drying lake bed to increase storage capacity of the lake during normal pool levels.
