MONTANA: Good Bets are the Gallatin, Lower Madison, Livingston Spring Creeks & Missouri

Wednesday, January 4th, 2012

Dig-In-Anchors.comAs we move into winter most of the lake run fishing and late fall hatches have run their course.

There are still a few fish moving out of the lakes that are worth targetting. Most of the browns are done spawning. Smaller streams will be closed for the winter months but many of the larger rivers and spring creeks are open all winter.

For the colder months it is important to find fisheries that either have spring fed influences or bottom release water from dams. Luckily many such fisheries can be found around Montana.

Fishing can actually be very good in the winter months.

The trout move into slower and deeper runs where they can be found in great concentrations. The most productive fishing is definitely nymph fishing. It is important to get the flies right on the bottom so adjust weights carefully. Yarn indicators also help detect the very subtle strikes that occur in the colder months.  Trout are in slow moving water and do not move fast to take flies so the strikes show up as a delicate flutter on a yarn indicator. It is good to have an itchy trigger finger when winter nymph fishing: set first and ask questions later.

Some good bets for the winter are the Gallatin, Lower Madison, Livingston Spring Creeks, Missouri and the Ruby.

MONTANA: Browns are Still Hitting Streamers

Monday, November 21st, 2011

As we move into the late fall there is still some very good fishing opportunities to be had.

The morning fishing is pretty tough with the colder temperatures, but the late morning and afternoon hours have been more productive. The baetis hatch is winding down and some wintery weather is starting to set in. Browns are currently spawning or finished spawning depending on the fishery, by the end of November most will be spawned out. The spring creeks are now on winter rates and are still fishing great.

Miles guided at DePuy spring creek the other day and they had consistent action and were able to throw dries over the baetis hatch for about two and a half hours after lunch.

The best bets right now are probably the Upper and Lower Madison, Gallatin and Spring Creeks.

The Missouri between the lakes has also been producing some big fish.

In general, the best fishing will be with nymph rigs before and after the hatch. On the spring creeks and occassionally on the other fisheries you can also throw baetis dries and emergers during the hatch.

A few browns are still hitting streamers but as the water temps drop you need to slow the retrieve and get closer to the bottom.

MONTANA: Streamer Fishing Should be Outstanding in The Next Few Weeks

Monday, October 24th, 2011

Montana Fishing Overview
Fishing remains excellent across Southern Montana. Fall is in the air and as the nights grow longer and cooler many of the lower reaches of the larger rivers in the region are turning on. Old favorites like the Upper Madison, Gallatin and Yellowstone are all fishing well. Water levels have dropped to normal levels on most of the rivers in the area. Hopper action is pretty much over and the main dry fly game will be focused on the blue winged olive hatch. These small grey mayflies (size 18-20) love cloudy days and with some grey skies forecasted make sure to have some in your box. The browns are also colored up and on the move and will continue to do so in preparation for spawning in November. This is the best time of the year to catch the biggest browns in the river. Streamer fishing should be outstanding in the next few weeks, especially on cloudy days. Nymph fishing big uggly streamers will also pick up some of these large trout. On most rivers try nymphing a bigger fly on top with a smaller baetis as a dropper.

Upper Madison River Fishing – (Very Good)
The upper river has great flows and continues to fish like a champ. The river has dropped back to normal levels and the fishing has been outstanding. Traffic on the river has dropped off and the big trout are eating again. The browns are moving and getting colored up and stripping streamers or nymphing big sculpins or zonkers can produce some real brutes. Some lucky anglers tag 25-30″ trout in the Madison every fall. If you want to hit a home run, this is one of the best rivers around to do it. Baetis will also be on the water and can produce some rising trout but often the action will still be subsurface. Baetis nymphs can be big producers this time of the year.

Lower Madison River Fishing – (Red Hot)
The Lower still has good flows and water temperatures have been dropping to safe levels for trout. The baetis mayflies have started and cloudy skies should produce some great dry fly fishing after lunch. Some of the nastiest weather can produce the thickest hatches. Big browns are also moving and should be feeding on cloudy days. Nymph fishing is a great way to target the big boys and the standard larger patters should target sculpins and crayfish. Small baetis nymphs will be a producer when trailed behind a bigger bug. Stripping streamers can also produce some huge trout if you commit to it. For the best dry fly fishing work the pockets and edges around weedbeds.

Yellowstone River Fishing – (Red Hot)
The Yellowstone has finally dropped to good fishing levels and is in great shape. The hopper and attractor dry fishing continues to be decent but fish are starting to key in on mayflies. I was on an overnight float a few days ago and we saw a sprinkling of baetis, larger grey drakes and some rusty spinners in the morning. Not lots of bugs yet, but the trout seemed to prefer mayflies over terrestrials. The exception are ants, the trout seem to definitely be looking for flying ants on hot sunny days. With grey skies and cooler weather in the forecast the beatis fishing should really ramp up soon. The boat traffic is very light now and nearly every inside corner after riffles can produce some fish on dries. The dry fly fishing on the ‘Stone has been so good that most of us haven’t tossed a nymph or streamer in a while, but when the cool rainy weather sets up the streamer fishing for monster browns should really turn on.

Gallatin River Fishing – (Very Good)
The Gallatin is in great shape and fishing pressure has lightened in the canyon and below. The water is gin clear and the river looks gorgeous. The clear water gives the fish a bit more time to look at your bugs so dropping to 4 and 5x isn’t a bad idea. Smaller patterns are definitely the ticket now and nymphing double small flies is the way to go. On cloudy days the baetis dry fly hatch will produce some rising trout. The afternoon fishing just after lunch has been the most productive.

Boulder River Fishing – (Very Good)
We haven’t been on the Boulder much since July, but it should be in prime shape now that fall has set in. Wade fishing is the only game with the low flows and nymphing the bigger runs or tossing dries to rising trout over the baetis hatch should be very good.

Ruby River Fishing – (Poor-Fair)
The Ruby has been a bit of an enigma this season. The clarity on the river has been off on most of the days we have visited due to the work on the dam. We have been pretty gun shy about heading that way with the questionable fishing conditions. It normally fishes like a champ this time of year on streamers and at some point the water clarity has to improve but you should have a back up if you try it.

Missouri Fishing – (Very Good)
The Mo near Townsend is a great option for targetting lake run rainbows. The river down by Craig can produce some great dry fly fishing over the baetis hatch in October.

Ennis, Hebgen and Harrison Lake Fishing Report
Lake junkies have been having some great fishing pulling streamers along banks and weed beds. The Callibaetis and tricos are done for the season.

Spring Creeks Fishing – (Very Good)
The spring creeks always get good in October as the pressure drops off and the baetis hatch kicks in. Expect a daily afternoon hatch of baetis that will bring fish to the surface. Cloudy days will bring lots of fish up and sunny days a few sporadic risers. There are still a lot of weeds which makes landing big trout tougher, but they will begin dying off and the weeds will improve as we move into the late fall season.

MONTANA: Dry Fly Fishing Remains Outstanding on the Yellowstone

Monday, October 3rd, 2011

Fishing is heating up across Montana.

Very few folks are on the water and the trout have been feeding hard.

Dry fly fishing remains outstanding on the Yellowstone and big browns are starting to move on the Stone and Madison.

MONTANA: Yellowstone River – Nymph Fishing Has Been Spectacular

Monday, September 12th, 2011

The Yellowstone has finally dropped to good fishing levels and is in great shape. The nymph fishing has been spectacular with lots of fish and some great size.

The dry fly bite is now officially on and trout are eating attractors, nocturnal golden stones and hoppers.

The river is in amazing shape and many guides have commented this is the best fishing on the Yellowstone that anyone can remember. The flows are only going to get better and the phenomenal fishing will last well into the fall months. With the healthy flows the hopper banks are plentiful and fish have finally started looking for the big terrestrials. The best hopper fishing is yet to come. With hopper fishing arriving so late this year, the trout will not be nearly as educated on the big foam flies as they normally are going into September.

Guide traffic always drops off at the end of August as school starts back up and the number of boats on the water wll diminish fast just when the best terrestrial fishing of the year hits.

If you ever wanted to sample fall fishing in Montana this is the year to do it!!!

MONTANA: Upper Madison River – Red Hot

Monday, August 1st, 2011

The upper river has great flows and continues to fish like a champ.

The salmonfly hatch was one of the best in decades but is now a thing of the past. The aquatic hatches are beginning to wind down a bit but caddis are still very important and a few late pmds are still around. This is the time of year when the Madison can be really great as other guides head to different rivers like the Yellowstone that are now open and the traffic really dries up even though the fishing is terrific.

The dry fly fishing on the Madison has been outstanding this season with attractor dries and caddis. The terrestrial fishing will start up soon.

Nymphing remains terrific and the fish become more opportunistic and spread out their feeding across the day now that there are less aquatic insects on the water. We are never shy about hucking big streamers or dragging some behind an indicator this time of year.

MONTANA: Several Rivers Have Produced Home Runs

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011

Overview
It looks like flows from run off have peaked a few days ago and rivers are dropping fast around Southwest Montana. The next few days and weeks should produce more and more clear water and anglers will delight in casting to trout that haven’t seen in months (or since last year!). Several rivers have produced home runs right through run off including the Madison and Missouri and other long time favorites like the Gallatin and Yellowstone are just around the bend. The Madison continues to fish like a champ although the water with good vis above the West Fork is starting to get pretty crowded. The color is improving by the day on the float section of the Upper and should green up any day now. The Lower Madison has also dropped back down to 5000cfs and should continue to drop a bit each day. It is producing fish again and should really kick into high gear any day now. The spring creeks continue to fish well and the PMD hatch has produced a large number of trout to the net over the 20″ mark. The trout are starting to smarten up in the creeks and refusals are more common than just a week or so ago but they should still produce good fishing while the hatch lasts (good luck getting rods, all of the creeks are booked solid until mid July).

Upper Madison River – Very Good
The river below the West Fork has a lot of color but you can still fish the right bank for a long way down. We have been targetting the upper river with great success. The fish are in soft water with the high flows. You don’t have to hit too many runs to start racking up a lot of fish. Standard fair including worms and stones continue to produce, but don’t forget a PMD nymph as a dropper as an option even when there is color in the water. Flows are dropping steadily now and will be dropping below Kirby soon. Guides are now starting to work the water below Lyons bridge and the fishing will turn explosive very soon as the float section greens up. Flows will remain higher than average on the float section for July pushing trout onto the banks until the middle of the month which should be ideal for the salmon fly. Just make sure you make accurate casts and plan on loosing some flies in the willows.

Lower Madison River – Very Good
The Lower cranked back up to 7000cfs for a while and turned to mud. It just dropped back to 5000cfs and should continue to drop a bit each day. Clarity is still off as of yesterday but should be improving by the day. Sean Blaine fished it with some friends on the 3rd and caught fish but felt the visibility still needed to improve a bit. I would guess it should be turning on very soon. Fish will still be over the weed beds even at 4000-5000 cfs but banks will also be productive. If you are the first boat or two down in the morning the banks can be very good, but if you have a late start the fish will have seen some flies. The weed beds are much more substantial and will produce even if you are late to the prom. Big bugs on top like a yuk bug, JJ, wooly bugger, etc trailed by a worm or a small crayfish. Other trailer flies like small stones, attractor nymphs, PMD emergers and caddis emergers can also produce.

Bear Trap Canyon -  Good
Be careful with the high flows, but if you know how to fish this in high water you can be greatly rewarded. Definately don’t even think of floating it now. A friend of ours had an epic day nymphing stones on seams at 4000 cfs and less than 6″ of visibility recently. We don’t guide this much until it drops to floatable levels, but the canyon offers lots of structure that produces softwater havens for trout that don’t want to swim in the jet stream.

Yellowstone River – Poor
Thar she blows! The stone got huge this year but is dropping steadily. This is the last river to clear and will probably start fishing again in the second half of July.

Missouri – Very Good
The Mo is big right now but still clear and will fish all the way through run off. Mostly a nymphing game with wire worms and your favorite dropper which seems to be a ray charles with a hot red bead. Lots of fish are being caught if you can get your flies to where the fish are. Wire worms and fire bead sow bugs have been the ticket for most of the guides that we have talked to. Sean Blaine is there for the next 10 days and just reported that they have been experiencing some very solid fishing and that the trout definitely have their feed bags on. You will probably see a lot of other boats out there with other rivers being off, but it will be a safe bet for the next few weeks until other rivers settle.

Ennis, Hebgen and Harrison Lake
Ennis Lake is still dirty but should turn on soon. Hebgen is starting to see some callibaetis but not many risers. Streamer fishing on Hebgen to bank cruisers has been very good and is producing some huge trout. Sight fishing to cruisers with callibaetis and damsels on Harrison is always a fun way to spend the morning.

Spring Creeks – Red Hot
The spring creeks always fish great in June. We’ve had some epic days on McCoy spring creeks lately and the Paradise Valley creeks continue to fish well.

One of our guests recently pulled out a 23.5 inch brown out of Behnarts during the PMD hatch. Water temps are warmer in the spring creeks relative to the larger rivers and fish feed during larger periods of the day. THe pale morning duns are now thick on all of the spring creeks and are hatching for hours at a time.

On sunny days the fish key in on the emerges sub surface and on cloudy days you will see more heads. Weeds haven’t been too much of a problem yet and nymph fishing has been awesome in the mornings. Big fish seem to be in the creeks this year and we have pulled several fish over 20″ this season.
