MISSISSIPPI: Big ol Bull Reds play One Heck of a Game of Tug of War

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012

The Biloxi, Ms. charter boat WhipaSnapa (an it’s lovely guest). Seriously been hammering some huge, hard fighting reds. Just beyond the Mississippi Sound. Out at the beautiful,an very fishy, Horn Island.

You talkin bout a fight, them dang Big ol Bull Reds play one heck of a game of tug of war. PULL UP REEL DOWN!!!!!!:) We’ve had another large mixture of great folks aboard, Bachelor party’s, families, our great Air Force crew, an more. Mostly for the 6 hour combo trips, the past couple weeks. We hit the inshore light tackle stuff for an hour are so catching up 30, 40 nice croaker along with a few drum an white trout. Then make a short very relaxing boat ride, especially aboard the roomy WhipaSnapa!!! (It just rides so sweet)!!:) out to one of the Barrier Islands off the Ms. shores to get our chum on! Which the past couple weeks Ol Horn Island has been the secret spot. And well, some string pulling shonuff(w/a few those very descriptive words) slipping out every now an then!!! Pretty good mixture of sharks-(blacktip, spinners, atlantic sharpnose), king mackeral, jack cravelle, etc…. But its been a very consistent catch of huge smile pulling Reds. An a bunch of em! That had the WhipaSnapa’s great guest scrambling to get the reel that was screaming!!! So could be the one to lock an load. They were at times double and tripled up w/ the big ol reds an :) s!

We were chumming with poggies. Baits were a nice selection of golden croakers that were anchored on bottom w/about a 2oz sinker rigged Carolina style.. Kings, sharks ,an Jacks were mostly on the croaker as well. But freelined on the surface just behind the transom in the amazing chum slick, produced by our master baiter Mr. Austin F. Might have to replace the drags on the sticks after this week. Moan we saved a few for you an your great WhipaSnapa boating adventure !! Thanks ya’ll lovin every minute of it…

So what you waiting for here is your invitation:

Getcha self on down here, load up on the ol’ WhipaSnapa an let’s get it on!!!

MISSISSIPPI: Ended the Day With 9 Trout, 4 Reds & 1 Flounder

Monday, April 2nd, 2012

…Now to get to the fishing…I had Will, Bill, Jim, and Mark on Saturday. The first three guys on the list surprised Mark with a charter for his birthday. Mark is a local contractor doing some great work with Habitat for Humanity. I will let you in on a little tip. If you are going to surprise your brother-in-law with a charter, don’t pop up at his house with all the kids and wives the night before, “Surprise we are all staying here for a couple days.” That was 13 people and 1 dog crashing Marks birthday weekend, non the less he seemed in good spirits and happy to be on the water with family. We pounded the marsh looking for that one great bite which did not come. All the trout and bait I was finding a week or two ago has seemed to vanish. I can’t figure it out, maybe the rain, maybe it was just the first wave of trout, and this next full moon will bring a new batch of fish. We did how ever supplement the lack of trout with red fish. We found plenty of reds we probably caught over 20, the size was not all there but the action was pretty good. We ended the day with 10 trout 8 reds and 2 flounder. Not the box full we were hoping for, but a beautiful day on the water with great people!

Sunday I had Pat and Ryan from Georgia. I met Pat at the Saltwater Sportsman Seminar a year ago. Pat and Ryan both were eager to get to the marsh and away from the sounds of slot machines for a little while. We did much of what I did the day before, hunting. We could never find more then one or two trout per spot. It wasn’t a matter of finding good water, I found some of the prettiest water I have seen in a week. Again the bait was just not there along with the fish. The bright part of the day was to see Ryan catch the first two reds, which were also his first two reds, on 10lb test. We get them in the boat and Ryan says,”That’s 4-4.5lbs”, so I weigh it and sure enough, 4.5lbs. Well, his dad Pat gets one in the boat and Ryan says,”That’s 6lb”, he was right on again. Come to find out he has been working in a meat market for ten years. These guys were a pleasure to be around and am looking forward to fishing with them in the fall. We ended the day with 9 trout, 4 reds, and 1 flounder.

MISSISSIPPI: Winter Fishing Tips – Use Dark or Natural Colored Soft Plastics in 10ft of Water

Monday, January 2nd, 2012

Power-Pole Style Anchor SystemCheck out this big 10 lb 9 oz bass recently caught by 7 year old Bailey at Calling Panther!

Winter Fishing Tips

Large mouth bass can be caught in the winter.  Try using shiners in 10 feet of water for big fish. If using artificial lures, try using dark or natural colored soft plastics in 10 feet of water.  Target the areas with significant depth changes. Also, try crankbaits and rattletraps off the levee in the afternoons.

Bream fishing can be slow, but try using crickets and redworms around brushtops in 5-10 feet of water.

Catfish can be caught on liver or cool-cat worms fished on the bottom in about 5-10 feet of water. Also, try the creek channel in the lake as well as the creek at the nature trail.

Crappie can be found in 15 feet of water suspended at around 9 feet.  Fish structure in these areas with a minnow or jig (white or chartruese).  Also, try the structure around the dam.

MISSISSIPPI: Big Brute Sheepshead Have Been Avg. 4 to 8 lbs

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011

Sheepshead and Reds make them drags sing!!! 12-5-2011

This Biloxi, Ms. Charter Boat Whipasnapa, has delivered a many of good looking smiles lately. Wonderful folks from all around this great USA and abroad, have enjoyed time aboard that Darn ol Whipasnapa this past week or so.

Ohio, Iowa, Alabama,Texas, Missouri, California, Rhode Island, Ms. & England probably even missed a few. Sure glad to have’em. And according to all the smiles, they were glad to be aboard. With a light tackle spincast in hand something on the other end making those drags sing. We all know what happens, when that happens..:)

Them dang big ol sheepshead on light tackle is bout as good as it gets. They really put up one heck of a scrap. I have really enjoyed experimenting with them in the kitchen. They eat excellent! Very versatile, grilled, baked, fried, stuffed, pattied, po boyed or potato crusted all have suited the taste buds mighty fine!

They have been very reliable as well, averaging 12-20 per trip, only fished 2 to 3 hrs. on most. The Big brute sheepshead have been avg. 4 to 8 lbs with a red are 2 in there to boot. Of course the biggest ones got away just before surrendering to the net. Most trips flew in, so not really keeping a whole lot. Some took a few to the local restaurants to have prepared to their liking. They all had thumbs up on that gig!!
We still gettin’em’on! So moan down an get’em’on with us. shoot throw some out there for that holiday table spread!!

Probably the last report for this great 2011 season so…We Wish everyone a VERY Merry Christmas !!!

MISSISSIPPI: Columbus Lake – Throw Shallow Running Crankbaits, Spinnerbaits & Swimbaits

Friday, November 11th, 2011

The crappie bite is fair to good and should continue thru this month.

Hit the old river runs right now for best results. The runs that are closed off on the upstream end will be the ones to target. Crappie are holding on stumps and laydowns in 4 to 8 ft of water that have deeper water nearby. Crappie jigs have been outproducing minnows, but that can change daily.

The bass reports are still fair with most of the action happening in the same areas as the crappie. The river runs are producing a few quality fish, and the gravel pits are holding good numbers of keeper-size bass. The bass seem to be holding just off shoreline structure and relating bait vs. wood or grass. Throw shallow running crankbaits, spinnerbaits and swimbaits where shad are active.

Catfish reports are the same as for Aberdeen with most folks hitting the channel and the mouths of the old river runs with jugs and rod-n-reels with some success.

MISSISSIPPI: Chotard & Albermarle – Try Soft Plastics & Spinnerbaits Around Edges of Trees

Monday, November 7th, 2011

Fishing on Chotard and Albermarle is always dependent upon the MS River level and movement.  As the water slowly leaks out of the oxbows and back into the River, fishing is great!  For best results on these lakes, always check the MS River report to know if the river is moving in or out of the lake and target areas of moving water for improved fishing. Today, the river is at 12ft and slowly rising.

Bass fishing has been great during the past few weeks.  The cold front could slow down the bite, but it should pick back up later in the week.  The trees along the bank across from Laney’s should be holding fish.  Try soft plastics and spinnerbaits around the edges of the trees.  The points along Chotard are producing good-sized fish.  Try texas-rigging a plastic worm when fishing the points.

Crappie fishing has also been great lately.  However, crappie are often very finicky about pressure changes, so they may slow down for a few days as well.  These lakes are known to have big crappie and a lot of them.  Try using minnows or jigs around the willow trees.  If you cannot find them there, try some of the deeper treetops along the lake.  Also, slow-trolling open waters along the bank can be a very effective method on these lakes.

Bream fishing is great right now as well.  Try using crickets or redworms around treetops in deep water.  There have been reports of fishermen filling their coolers with nice size fish.

Catfishing is always good on the lakes.  As an oxbow of the MS River, catfish will always be a good option.  Try tightlining in deep water with chicken liver, cutbait, or nightcrawlers.

MISSISSIPPI: Lake Mike Conner – Crappie Can be Found Holding Near Structure, Jigs & Minnows Work Well

Monday, October 24th, 2011

Bass fishing has been good.  Most fish caught have been fairly small, but some in the 2 lb range were taken.  Please feel free to take a mess of small bass home with you!

Crappie can be found holding near structure in deeper areas of the lake.  Jigs and minnows work well.

Bream anglers have done well using worms, crickets, and tube jigs.

Catfish fishing has been great!  Fish are biting best at night.  Worms, chicken liver, and shiners have been good baits to use.  The hot spot has been between the boat ramp and the dam.

MISSISSIPPI: Fishing the Lower River & Marsh Catching Bass Using Soft Plastics

Monday, October 17th, 2011

Bass fishermen still fish the river & oxbows catching bass around woody cover in the main channel as well as the oxbows using soft plastics and spinnerbaits. Anglers fishing the lower river & marsh continue to report catching a few bass using soft plastics, especially on a falling tide.

Several reports came in of anglers catching flathead catfish in the 20 to 40-lb. range in the mid-river areas near Smith’s Fish Camp using live bait.

The bream are still being caught using crickets in the oxbows & main channel near woody cover. Some anglers continue to report decent catches of redear (shellcracker) in the lower river oxbows and main channel south of the forks as well as in the marsh using redworms in 4 to 8 ft. of water. Some of the better catches reportedly coming from the edges of the main river channel & along the edges of the larger bayous in the marsh near I-10 using redworms.

A few new crappie reports came in from the oxbows where some anglers are trolling mid-lake using small crankbaits or jigs to catch fish in the 1 to 1.5-lb. range.

MISSISSIPPI: Lake Mary Crawford – Bass are Being Caught on Spinner baits and Plastic Worms

Monday, October 3rd, 2011

Bream fishing has been fair this week with most fish being caught withn crickets in 4-6 ft of water.  Fishing near brush or other structure is recommended.

Bass are being caught on spinner baits and plastic worms.  The best fishing has been in 4-6 ft depths and using spinnerbaits, crank baits, and soft plastics.  Feel free to take a mess of small bass home with you.

Crappie are being caught in 3-7 ft depths with minnows.  Target some of the brush tops listed below or around the fishing piers.

Over 10 new fish attractor sites were created during January 2011. Several of these sites were marked with GPS and the coordinates are listed below. The lake depth map has been updated showing many of these locations. The additional habitat should provide structure for various fish species and offer hot spots for anglers to try. Good luck!
