S CAROLINA: Put Six Real Nice Sea Trout in the Boat

Had a good trip Friday with old client AJ Bland, and his friend Byron. We put six real nice sea trout in the boat, and then went and caught four Redfish to top off the trip.Our water temps continue to rise and the Cobia will show in the sounds shortly. I’m ready to give them a try.

S CAROLINA: A Local Tells Me Oysters Are Really the Secret Bait

Lots of folks in the Beaufort area have been targeting Sheepshead the last several weeks.

The bigger fish are in the sound spawning, and are being taken off the bridges and other piling structure. Fiddler crabs are a good bait, but a local tells me oysters are really the secret bait of choice. Drop them to the bottom, and slowly lift a foot or two. If you feel any resistance at all, set the hook. These fish are very light biters, and can be tough to catch. They also are excellent table fare, and put up a great fight on the line.

S. CAROLINA: First School of Fish Just After We Started Poling

We headed out at first light on New Years day looking to sight fish for schooling reds.

It was a bit chilly getting off of the ramp but as we got moving down the river it really wasn’t too bad. The water temperature dropped a few degrees which seemed to slow the fish down a little. We got onto our first school of fish just after we started poling and put the first fish in the boat by 6:45 am… first red of the year; I don’t know for sure, but it would be hard to beat! We went on to catch 15 more over the next few hours and got back to the ramp early.

S CAROLINA: We Have had Success at All Stages of the Tide

Have had several trips over the last week or two in the Port Royal Sound area, and the Redfish bite seems to be on the upswing.

We have had success at all stages of the tide, including an excellent day in the grass on a 9 ft tide. The water has cooled off this week and is in the mid to upper 50′s, and the fish seem to have begun schooling better than they were the last month or so. Had a trip last Saturday with a nine year old and his grandparents, and they caught 27 Redfish off one oyster shell that had current moving around the point. All of these fish but one were in the slot limit range of 15 to 23 inches.

This bite, which has been on big mud minnows and big shrimp, should continue through December. The Seatrout bite continues to slow as they hard to find after our winter kill in Jan and Feb.

S CAROLINA: Three of Us Caught around 30 Trout

Fishing in our area this fall has been a little different than the normal bite we generally see this time of year.

Our water temps continue to be in the mid 60′s inland, and we still have lots of mullet, and shrimp and menhaden in the estuary. Normally our water temps are a little lower, and the majority of the bait has moved out.

Our Redfish are not in the big schools that will be prevalent as the water temps fall. We are catching them here and there, but the big bites with double digit catch numbers have yet to show.

Did have an excellent trip last week where three of us caught around 30 trout, and a couple of nice Redfish to boot. Most of my Redfish trips have been under the double digit mark, but look for that to change as the weather cools off.

December could turn out to be one of our better months this year.

S CAROLINA: Spoons (Fire Tiger & Silver/Blue) are Good this Time of Year

Trout: (Slow to fair)
Captain Steve Pietrykowski reports that a few trout are moving shallower as water temperatures cool, but the best pattern is still fishing in 65-80 feet. Spoons are a good choice at this time of year, and fire tiger and silver/blue are good colors.

Black Bass: (Fair)
Captain Pat Bennett reports that as air and water temperatures drop the fishing is improving. Early and late try topwater lures such as Spooks and Jitterbugs around long points. Also target bass related to shoreline cover proximate to deep water, where they can be caught on shakey head worms, Carolina rigs and spinnerbaits. The first drop-off is often strong. Fish can also be caught on soft plastics fish around bluff walls. Many bass continue to be out in deep, open water following roaming schools of baitfish, but many of these bait schools should make their way up the rivers and creeks as the fall progresses. Water levels continue to drop, so be careful putting in and running on the lake.

S CAROLINA: 74 Degree Water & Hit on a Blue Water Candy (1 oz)

On Saturday, Capt. Keith Logan of Feedin Frenzy Charters out North Myrtle Beach, SC; Scott Smith of Charlotte, NC; and, Ryan Bright of Dallas TX, went to the Gulf Stream for some Wahoo fishing.

We left Cricket Cove Marina in Little River, South Carolina, at 5:30am and headed to the bluewater. With Capt. Keith at the helm, the seas were 2 to 3 feet about 4 seconds apart on the way out. The Yamaha powered Regulator 26 made 32 knots on the way out. Wow, what a great ride the Regulator is! We arrived at the 100/400 around 7:45 am. The water was “King Green” and 72 degrees, so we put lines out and worked offshore to 285 feet of water. There, we found 74 degree water and had a hit on a Blue Water Candy 1 oz. Bling Skirt with a blue and white head and Cotton Candy skirt with a med ballyhoo on the planer line. It was a 30 pound Wahoo and was boated by Ryan.

We still could not find 78 degree water, so picked up lines and moved to the Black Jack Area, where we found 76 degree water. We put lines back out and trolled offshore looking for warmer water. We got a hit in 303 feet of water on a Blue Water Candy 1 oz. Bling Skirt with a blue and white head and Cotton Candy skirt with a med ballyhoo on the planer line. It was a 50 pound Wahoo and was boated by Scott.

We fished until noon, picked up, and headed home with two nice Wahoo so we could get ready to fish the Fall Brawl on Sunday, out of Ocean Isle Fishing Center. Both Wahoo were caught on Blue Water Candy 1 oz. Bling Skirt with a blue and white head and Cotton Candy skirt with a med ballyhoo on the planer line.

S. CAROLINA: Found the Redfish Moving Off the Grass Flats

Fished in St Helena Sound this week, and had excellent luck on the Redfish.

We put 21 in the boat on a 4 hour trip on Wednesday. We fished the last of the incoming tide and the outgoing, and found the Redfish moving off the grass flats around the oyster shells. We had several over the legal slot size of 23 inches.

The bull Redfish bite is also going on strong in the Port Royal Sound with lots of fish in the 25 to 35 pound range. These fish must be returned, so be sure to handle them with care if you go.

S CAROLINA: Trout – Done Fairly Well on Them with Live Shrimp & Popping Cork Combos

Had several trips the last couple of weeks in St Helena Sound area.

The Coosaw River and the Combahee River have started to show some trout. It looks now like we will have a better trout year than predicted by DNR, as we have done fairly well on them with live shrimp and a popping cork combo. It should only get better as the water temps continue to fall.

The Redfish bite has also been very consistent, with the larger Bull Reds in the deep holes on the rocks, and the school fish biting well on the flats. Grass edges with oyster shells have produced good results.

I have also been picking up a flounder or two each trip.

Our bite should continue to improve as we move into the heart of the mullet run.
