AUSTRALIA: MORE Mud Crabs ON THE SOUTH COAST

Friday, February 17th, 2012

Scores of smiley mackerel and frog mouth pilchards have invaded the Clyde River over the last couple of weeks.

A lot of them will probably get flushed out with the recent rain and more heavy rain predicted, but the baitfish will be back with predators in tow when the water clears.

In the meantime there has been some less expected patterns. A couple of weeks ago Rob Fish from Clyde River House Boats reported that his customers caught some Mud Crabs to 1.5 kilos. This sparked a lot of interest, so I rang Rob and found out some more.

For a start the crabs were not even caught in pots, just on standard flathead fishing lines! Further more the family who caught the Mud Crabs caught 5 that trip, and the biggest, nicknamed ‘Hercules’ actually weighed 1.9 kilos, not 1.5 kilos as was first reported…it was big enough to feed the whole family!

As it turns out, Mud Crabs have been a bit more common on the Clyde than usual this season, especially up around Nelligen where experienced ‘crabbers’ have been bagging out at times with their crab pots. But newcomers catching 5 without a pot-wow!

Global warming? The east Australian currents in a La Nina year? Or what else? Who cares-this is a big bonus for locals and tourists alike, lets hope they still happen when the run off clears.

BREAM KING

Captain Kev from Wilderness Fishing is Mallacootas undisputed king of fishing on lure, so when he says there is some absolutely massive bream, flathead and whiting available at Mallacoota, you better believe it.

But that doesn’t they are easy to catch them-many Mallacoota anglers I spoke too missed out! He mumbled something about salinity, weather cycles and slow retrieves. Sounds like it’s time again for me to get down and find out just what new techniques he has pioneered on this amazing system. Can’t wait.

PLASTICS AIN’T PLASTICS

You may have read that the Storm Pro Shad is one of my favorite jewfish, flathead, Snapper and Murray Cod soft plastics because the tail wriggles seductively even when the lure is just moving along at a snails pace, but there is much more to it.

I’d been playing around with some different plastics again to see what else is new on the market, but found that the super soft varieties that wiggle well at slow speed don’t stay on the hook that well. Further more few have the baby Tailor shaped profile-and baby Tailor are our most common estuary bait fish thru much of the year.

Yet another obstacle was a finding an ultra thin body that permits hookups even when the lure fouls on the bite, as often happens. Another thing I look for is prominent ribs to hold scent in the body.

The Pro Shad has none of the above problems, yet all of the positive attributes, and this is why I came back to it yet again-it is still the best soft plastic of its type on the market.

Meanwhile out on the coast line Adam Giatras and friends evened the score with a few big jewfish when they speared two honkers one of which was well over the 1.4 meter mark! Now before line anglers say hey-that’s cheating, consider this-Adam is an experienced spear fisho, and has been trying to get his first jewfish for over 5 years!

All this is off the back of the bonafide 100 pound jewfish caught near the Shoalhaven River mouth a few weeks back. Seems like there is no end to the resurgence of this species. Punch my name into the You Tube Search Bar and you can see some local video footage of this amazing species.

SMITH AND DAWSON

I noticed that when I say it this heading it has a Clint Eastwood ‘Smith and Wesson’ ring to it. That’s because when locals Ray Smith and Dean Dawson fish together off the rocks the fish are in the firing line.

The duo hit pretty point and hooked an 8 foot Hammerhead Shark on Rays new Okuma Salina 2 Spin Reel. The fight was gun smoking hot-these sharks will make a similar sized marlin blush in the combined speed and power department. After nearly being spooled twice Ray got the beast in and tagged it. A shark this big off the rocks on spin gear-that’s something!

See you on the water

AUSTRALIA: Pt Phillip Bay Reds – Baits Including Squid, Pilchards, Garfish…

Power-Pole Style Anchor
Ben Laverty and his father, James, sounded up Snapper in 12m of water off Altona last Sunday afternoon. According to Ben, there were heaps of baitfish, including yellowtail scad and garfish, in the area which was promising.

Setting the anchor well away from a cluster of boats, the boys managed five Snapper to 3.5kg, most of which were taken on pilchard, with one falling to a freshly caught yakka.

George Gabriel just can’t seem to get enough of the Snapper action, once again bagging out in 17m of water off Mordialloc. After setting out a berley trail, it took just twenty minutes for the first fish to be brought on board. During the afternoon, George recorded his personal best red of 4.1 kilograms. Once again, a range of baits including squid, pilchards, garfish, yakkas, slimey mackerel and silver whiting proved successful.

John Regali and his mate headed out with Reel Time Fishing Charters where they were astounded by how many fish were caught in such a short period of time. Leaving Carrum prior to sun up, the boat was back at the ramp just a few hours later with more than thirty Snapper to approximately 3.5kg taken in quick succession.

Marcus O’Dwyer and his father, John, headed out from Carrum in search of Snapper. After a series of moves, the anchor was set in 10m of water where plenty of small flathead kept them occupied until John hooked his first ever Snapper. According to Marcus, his father had never experienced a fish take so much line off his reel before and he couldn’t believe the fight. With a broken sounder and no previous experience in this area of the bay, the boys finished the session with just the one red, taken on a pilchard tail.

AUSTRALIA: Gossy is Well into Becoming Adept at Catching Flattys on Lures

Monday, November 7th, 2011

ESTUARIES

Well known and much loved radio identity and voice artist Dave Gosper has got right into his fishing and hits the water with his kayak when ever he can. Dave helped me with some voice lessons when I started my media career many moons ago, and I return the favor with some fishing advice when possible.

Gossy is well into becoming adept at catching flattys on lures, but has been keen on some bream as well so I suggested a switch to bait along with some pointers as per the chapter on the topic in my instructional DVD.

He returned all smiles with having caught a couple of bream, and, funny as ever, said that they were so big his wife still believes he detoured to the fish shop on the way home. I believe him…the smile was way too big to be a fib.

AN AUSSIE CALLED DODDY LAUGHS ALL THE WAY TO SOME MASSIVE Snapper

A few years back I fished with a bloke called Doddy from Port Lincoln in South Australia. Not only is this guy a freakish Fisherman, he is a real character with a contagious laugh.

Everyone on that trip from my producer, Camera Man, super model guest (Erin McNaught), myself and the rest of the gang will never forget the fishing and Doddys entertaining ability. Not surprisingly it was one of our best rating episodes ever.

I made him promise me that if he ever starts a charter boat he should call me, and that’s exactly what he’s gone and done.

A superb 9m cat ensures that when you catch those massive meter plus Snapper, King George Whiting, bluefish tuna and other fish he’s famous for, you will be doing it in comfort and style.

And I bet you all you like you won’t return with out a hint of his laugh in your own laugh. He doesn’t have a web site just yet, he’s one of those hidden gems that is harder to find, but you can find him on his mobile: 0428 630 253. Highly recommended fishing action and entertainment all rolled into one.

SNOWIES

Lakes Jindabyne and Eucumbene are fishing well on all the usual techniques, but a floating artificial dough bait tipped with scrub worms or bardi grub to help keep the dough bait from coming off is by far the best option for both numbers of medium sized rainbow and some XL sized browns.

Fished using a 14 gram running sinker rig, and the all important size 12 hook all via a nice light 3 kilo glo tip outfit and you are in for some real fun.

Interestingly, the water level drop in Lake Jindabyne that was used to help flush the Snowy River below has meant even better fishing for some observant anglers.

Mike Nicholls fished Hatchery Bay and reported that in areas the weed bands around the edges have been compressed from 30 meters wide down to around 5 meters wide. This has concentrated food and trout, and if you can find this habitat the fishing is exceptional.

Mike had his best polarizing sessions ever spotting on average around 5 big browns every hour or so, but as is sometimes the case they were hard to tempt on fly. While modern bait fishing strategies is bringing more of these fish undone, Mike has decided to continue chasing them on fly purely for the challenge factor.

Meanwhile the Eucumbene and Thredbo Rivers are still producing a reasonable numbers of Rainbow Trout along with the occasional brown as well.

With caddis hatches, flying ant falls and other insect activity occurring the rivers have come alive with rising fish at times and fly anglers lucky enough to be there at the time are getting some good sport.

For lure anglers on the streams there is a cool new twist on an old favorite. Friends of mine have been using the new Vibrax Glo in the Dark Spinners with great results on the rivers very early and late in the day and even into the dark. But to add to this ‘glowing report’, these lures now have a specialized two part main body which not only casts very well, it eliminates line twist which up to now has been a problem with these types of lures.

See you on the water.

AUSTRALIA: Williamstown To Werribee – Landed an Elephant Fish

Monday, October 24th, 2011

Ben and James Laverty shot out off Williamstown last Friday morning in search of Snapper. Setting out a berley trail and a spread of baits including pilchards and garfish along the 17m line produced a few Snapper. According to James, the bites were timid, but the action increased on the change of tide. Moving in to 15m of water also resulted in a few more Snapper averaging 55 to 60 centimetres.

Fishing in 10m of water towards Werribee South off Portarlington, Kevin Warwick and his son, Thomas, landed eight Snapper to 4.5kg and a surprise Elephant Fish during their first trip for the season. Kevin’s workmates, Binh and Ramez were also amongst the action with rods buckling almost simultaneously on the low tide change. All fish were caught on whole pilchards.

East of the Yarra River, Frank De Luca headed out off Brighton on Tuesday afternoon and almost immediately sounded up masses of Snapper in 14m of water. Once the baits were in the water, it didn’t take for a few fish to oblige with Snapper of 2.5 to 4 kg taken on squid and pilchards. Frank mentioned that the last of both the ebb and flood tides seems to be peak feeding period.

It was a similar scenario last Thursday evening where Snapper were again on the chew at Brighton, but this time in just 5m of water. Interestingly, after examining the stomach contents of a few fish kept for the table, Frank and his fishing buddy, David Gatt, noticed that they were all full of sea urchins.

Kayak fishing enthusiast, Richard Linossi, says it has been hard core fishing in the shallows off Ricketts Point and Blackrock, with some sessions yielding catch and release bags of 30 to 40 Snapper, averaging 1.3 to 3.5kg, on lures and soft plastics. A range of artificials including worm and baitfish profile soft plastics as well as various blades and vibes have been successful.

AUSTRALIA: Lysaghts – Excellent reports of early season Snapper

Monday, September 12th, 2011

CORINELLA:

Customers Steve and Boney fished the middle spit for squid during the week. The boys later headed to Elizabeth Island on dusk in search of gummies. They landed a cracker gummy that tipped the scales past 25kg. After a few quick snaps the big girl was released with no harm done. It was taken on yakka. They also got a nice 4kg fish and a few ripper squid. Great reports guys and awesome fish.

LYSAGHTS:

Excellent reports of early season Snapper have fired up this week with great fishing had off Lysaghts. Customers Pat and Paul fished on Thursday to land 2 beautiful Snapper ranging from 2kg – 3.5kg. Both fish were taken on pilchards.

Greg and Patrick fished in 12m of water off Lysaghts on Wednesday and caught 2 ripper Snapper as well. Both weighed about 2kg. Along with the Snapper they landed some thumper couta that were some of the biggest couta we have seen all year. All fish were caught on squid and pilchard baits.

FLINDERS:

As the season rolls on so does this fantastic squid fishing. Reports are coming in thick and fast and doesn’t look like slowing down. Regular customer and gun angler Danny Manning fished the pier on Monday and landed 4 crackers with the biggest going a touch over 2kg. He reports that a few guys were getting them on baited silver whiting jigs under floats but the most effective way was to cast 3.5 sized jigs and really give them a rip. The squid couldn’t get enough of it.

Drifting over the weedbeds in the boat has been successful to with most guys managing to pick up a couple of squid also.

AUSTRALIA: Canberra, South Coast & Snowy Mtns – Purple Favorite Lure Color

Monday, August 1st, 2011

People like me who live a little way inland will really appreciate the warmer temps the south coast has on offer over winter. For example it has to be at least 5 degrees warmer on average than Canberra along the coast, so if you can pick days when the wind is not blowing it is quite comfortable without having to be rugged up in snow gear!

With this in mind I kept my eye on a nice slow moving high pressure system and then I hit the coast in search of a few tuna.

Fishing with Albino Imbriano and friends on the aptly named boat “Square Meters” (the lads work in the local concrete formwork industry), we hit the 1000 fathom line off Durras.

On the way we spotted a trawler pulling in their nets and did a few laps around the massive berley trail, but as fishy as it looked it was to no avail.

Moving onto a small sea mount we spotted some nice marks on the sounder at 100 fathoms, which turned out to be Albacore sitting just on the line (thermocline) where the water dropped a few degrees.

These fish were too deep to temt on lures, so we had to stop and cube with pilchards to get their interest. The Albacore were not big at around 2 kilos a piece, but still great fun on light tackle. We also spotted a shark that interestingly didn’t stay in the trail.

The word was that the fishing was better further south at the Tuross Sea Mounts, so that’s where we headed.

As soon as we arrived, the trolled lures got hit from better sized Albacore, and we changed between cubing and trolling in an area about a mile wide and three miles long. The Albacore were spread out throughout this area, and there were some solid fish to 10 kilos amongst them.

We missed out on yellowfin, but Anthony Stockman Fishing just 4 miles away got a nice 25 kilo yellowfin, and tuna guru Brett on Opportunity got onto a patch of 10 kilo yellowfin a few miles south of the smaller Tuross Sea Mount.

The blue fin tuna were scace, but a few were reported further south off Merrimbula and some good fish were caught wide of Wollongong.

So no big yellowfin or bluefin, but we were still pretty happy with our catch-we must’ve caught over 15 Albacore, and left them biting.

Albacore are the best eating tuna in our neck of the woods-they’re known as the chicken of the sea for their mild ‘un gamey’ flavor, and chicken like texture. But they must be bled and iced immediately if they are to be properly appreciated.

They are easily over cooked, in which case they flesh dries (again like chicken), so leave a little pink in the center of the steaks and they will cook through the rest of the way while on the plate. If you want a real treat, try Chicken Cacciatore, but replace the chicken cubes with Albacore cubes-YUM!

But back to how to catch them in the first place. For bait, Tweed Pilchards served us well, and the 25 kilo bulk block (trap bait block) worked out much cheaper than buying multiple 2 kilo bags.

On the troll, the deep divers just 10 meters from the transom worked best, the XRap Magnum 30 in “Purple Mackerel” scored more than half of the entire catch… Purple has long been a favorite lure color for tuna, and hence tuna fisherman-no one knows why…

It was a great 2 days, with good company, good weather and good fishing.

AUSTRALIA: AnglerTech & Mudguts Spinner Baits have Accounted for the Majority of The Fish

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011

OLDMAN CREEK
Is still a standout, it has settled down again since the environmental flows have stopped. The water level has dropped back to a fishable level and the cod and yellowbelly are responding accordingly. The clarity is plenty good enough for lure fishing and we do expect this to stay this way baring a heavy rain event. The majority of the catches have been cod but there has been a few Yella’s thrown into the mix. AnglerTech and Mudguts spinner baits have accounted for the majority of the fish in the last week. The colour debate is still strong but after listening to all the reports most colours have had some degree of success. Red and black and white are the stand out. As mentioned previously accurate casting is a must as is an intimate knowledge of the fish’s habits as the natives are a real challenge at this time of year. Keep in mind when the weather turns to crap and the barometer drops the fishing will turn to crap. But you will get some windows of hot fishing at times just be ready to go when that happens.

MURUMBIDGEE RIVER
Can be downright frustrating during the colder months but it can also be extremely rewarding because those pesky small cod are not as active which will improve your chances of hooking a monster. It is usually a lot longer between strikes but as a rule it is well worth the wait. If I was working the river for a trophy cod I would stick to the larger blade spinnerbaits such as the AnglerTech cod series with the size 8 blades and a large soft plastic as a trailer. This gives the lure a larger profile which will give these big cod a reason to expend a bit of energy and chase it. Colour is any ones guess but you can play it safe and stick with purple or red and black. These are safe bets or you could always go out of the square and use white which has been putting a few runs on the board of late. Hopefully I will be able to post a few picas of all of these Yella’s and cod that have been coming out of the creek and river over the last month or so I have seen them but most of the pics are on mobile phones and the boys don’t seem to know how to email them.

BLOWERING DAM
Has not let us down in the last week or so. The red fin still have a healthy appetite for small yabbies and or ice jigs and blades. I still would prefer to troll a custom crafted scud with a soft plastic above it. This system has been a winner for me this season. Don’t forget that we still have a bounty on a 6lb red fin. If anyone can bring me in one that weighs in at 6lb or more with guts and gills in, must be in good condition as we want to get it mounted I will give you $500.00 cash. This bounty has been in place for five years and no one has claimed it as yet. I have no dought that one day it will be claimed. Try Yellowin bay if you are chasing the Reddies I had a few good reports from this area. A few cod are starting to show on the troll during the day so this could be a good sign. Hope it is not just a flash in the pan.

TALBINGO DAM
Is good enough to take a drive. Most fisho’s who troll it using fenders and worms are coming home with a feed. The best part is you don’t have to travel far from the boat ramp if you are chasing trout. For the redfin you might have to move around a bit but it could be worth it. Don’t forget that if the dam is glassy calm at any time that you are there you will need to run leadline. This time of year I would only use Scrubworms as they can handle the hard cold conditions that you are likely to encounter.

AUSTRALIA: Salmon Being Caught in Good Numbers Along the South Coast

Wednesday, June 8th, 2011

Well what a mixed bag we have for you this week, nothing on the bigger fish to report but if you were lucky enough to be out on the water on Saturday, what a day condsidering what the weather was like on the Sunday afternoon and late evening.

We have had some good rainfall over the last few days which will hopefully arouse some fish out there, I know for all those that are on tank water you will be breathing a sigh of relief. Hopefully the water temperatures will be where we want them to be to get some decent fish caught.

Salmon are still being caught in good numbers along the South Coast towards Albany, have also had reports of catching afew from Binningup Beach but they were quite away out. As you all know, the Salmon haven’t been running like they normally are with the water temps too high closer to shore.

Busselton Jetty has had some action over the last week with more than one customer experiencing good results on Crabs. One customer quite happy to report catching his bag limit within the first hour of getting there, another happy to report catching his limit using lights behind the hospital. Not only have Crabs being getting caught from the Jetty but one customer going out a little deeper hooked onto some nice Flounder, King George Whiting and a couple of good sized Squid.

Mullaway have been reported being caught at Forrest Beach and down at the Capel River Mouth, with Taylor also being caught at Forrest Beach.

Herring, and Whiting are still doing OK with reports of good numbers around the beaches and in particular Herring getting caught along the beach near the Lighthouse in the early morning. High tide fishing doing well at the Hungry Hollow.

It’s been a long time since i cooked Flounder, so i went online to find a couple of recipes. Check out www.allrecipes.com in particular the Baked Seafood Au Gratin sounds great not to mention the Crab Stuffed Flounder.
