ARKANSAS: Brown Trout are still eating Sculpins as well as Shrimp

Tuesday, May 1st, 2012

The stretch of water from the White hole to Buffalo City has been exceptionally good for good sized Brown and Rainbow Trout, due to the steady flow of 3 or more units coming out of Bull Shoals Dam. We are also seeing alot of Golden Trout, which were just stocked in a small number last year. Brown Trout are still eating Sculpins well, as well as Shrimp. Berkely Bubblegum worms are working well on both Browns and Rainbows.

Cotter Fishing Forecast

With no visible end to the steady flow of water out of Bull Shoals Dam, the fishing will continue to get better and better, as the water temperatures will remain steady. dragging the aforementioned baits near known structure will produce some really good quality fish, and good quantities of them.

ARKANSAS: Spoons, Grubs, Swim baits and Live Bait are the Best

Friday, February 17th, 2012

Norfork Lake level is 552.5 and dropping slowly with a surface temperature of 45 degrees and it, too, is dropping slowly.

A cold front just came through leaving the area with its coolest temperatures of the year. Creeks are stained and are a perfect color for fishing. That’s where most of the fish are.

Not a lot has changed since the last report except more stripers are being caught. There are several schooling fish just inside the mouths of creeks feeding on the shad. These schools contain bass, hybrid and stripers. You will not know what it is until it hits.

Crappie are on brush and moving from one pile to another. They go shallow at dusk. There are some very nice fish being caught everyday. I have not caught any walleye for a few days but I do not run the whole lake. Harvey works the north end of the lake, Steve works the middle and Bink works the south. Spoons, grubs, swim baits and live bait are the best.

Jerk bait fishing is coming soon.

ARKANSAS: Crappie are Excellent on Pink Minnows and Crappie Stingers

Friday, October 7th, 2011

Craig D. Campbell Lake Conway Reservoir

Bates Field and Stream (501-470-1846) said the water is slightly low and stained. Bream are biting fairly well on redworms and crickets. Crappie are excellent on pink minnows and Crappie Stingers in Gold and Caney creeks. Bass are biting well on chartreuse/white spinnerbaits. Catfishing is excellent on trotlines and yo-yos baited with minnows and small bream.

Little Red River

Lindsey’s Resort (501-302-3139) said the water is low and clear with very little generation. Trout are biting very well on wax worms and marshmallows or Power Bait when the water is down. When the water is higher and current increases, switch to jigs and Rapalas for a good rainbow and brown trout bite.

Greers Ferry

As of Tuesday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reports the lake’s elevation at 459.24 feet MSL (Normal conservation pool – 461 MSL).

Tommy Cauley of Fish Finder Guide Service said the lake level is 2.69 feet below normal pool and falling. The water temperature is 70 degrees. White bass and hybrids have gone wild after the front moved through. Find shad and the hybrids will be close. They will bite pretty much all day long and are best on Zara Spooks, inline spinners, hair jigs and spoons. Black bass are slow, but should improve as water temperatures stabilize. Spinnerbaits, small crankbaits and topwater lures will work in the shallow water. Jigs, Carolina rigs and Texas-rigged worms will work on points and ledges. Crappie are still eating well most days in the tops of pole timber suspended in 15-25 feet of water over 60-80 feet of water. Blue catfish are eating best on jugs with live bait. The walleye bite is still off, but should pick up soon. Try minnows and crawlers dragged on flats and points in 15-40 feet of water. Bream are good on crickets and just about anything they can get their mouth over.

Harris Brake Lake

Harris Brake Lakeside Resort (501-889-2745) said the water is clear and low. Crappie are biting well on jigs. Bass are fair on a variety of artificials. Catfishing is slow. A lot of shad are beginning to school at the surface, so be ready for some topwater action soon.

Whiskers Sporting Goods in Perryville (501-889-2011) said crappie are biting well on minnows and Bobby Garland Baby Shad. Catfishing is good on minnows and blood bait. Bass are biting well on spinnerbaits, Rooster Tails and Rapalas. Bream are biting well on crickets and worms.

Lake Overcup

Overcup Landing (501-354-9007) said bass are being caught over brush tops on black soft-plastic worms. Crappie are being caught in 8 to 10 feet of water using pumpkinseed/chartreuse and pink/white/chartreuse jigs. Bream are good on crickets and wax worms. Catfish are being caught on trotlines using live bream and skipjack.

Brewer Lake

Overcup Landing (501-354-9007) said crappie are being caught over brush tops on white Crappie Stingers. Bream are biting well on crickets and redworms. Catfish are biting well on noodles or jugs baited with live bream and night crawlers. Bass are fair.

Lake Maumelle

Jolly Roger’s Marina said the water level has dropped to 2.8 feet below the spillway, which is normal for this time of the year. The water temperature has also dropped 8 degrees in the last week. Largemouth bass are biting very well on Carolina rigs, jigs and Texas-rigged soft plastics around 20 feet deep. There has been some movement to the shallow water, so shallow crankbaits and topwater lures should start catching a few fish. Kentucky bass are biting very well on jigheads and grubs in secondary coves from 10 to 15 feet deep. White bass are biting well from the east end of Big Island to the restricted area. Trolling with jigs, Rooster Tails and Rogues about 20 feet deep is the way to find the fish. Once you locate a school, stop and use a CC spoon to catch a boat load. Crappie are excellent on the edges of channels in 20 to 25 feet of water. They are hitting small jigs and grubs and small minnows. Bream are excellent on crickets near channels in 5 to 20 feet of water. Catfishing is good on cut shad and prepared bait.

Hatchet Jack’s Sport Shop (501-758-4958) said bream are biting well on redworms and crickets in 10 to 12 feet of water. Crappie are fair on white/chartreuse mini jigs and tight-lined minnows in 10 to 12 feet of water. Bass are biting well on topwater stick baits and shad-colored crankbaits. Catfishing is good on cut shad and brood minnows.

Sunset Lake

Turbyfill’s Outdoor Sports (501-315-3061) said the water is clear and at normal level. Bream are slow. Crappie are biting well on Kalins grubs fished in 5 feet of water. Bass are biting well on Rebel Crawdad crankbaits in 4 to 5 feet of water. Catfishing is fair.

Saline River Access in Benton

Turbyfill’s Outdoor Sports (501-315-3061) said the water is clear and a little low. Bream are fair on crickets. Crappie are slow. Bass are biting well on Rebel Crawdad crankbaits. Catfishing is slow.

Arkansas River at Morrilton

Charley’s Hidden Harbor in Oppelo said the water is clear and the dredging has stopped. Shad have moved into the sandbars. Large gar are in the shallows, following the shad. Catfish are biting well on whole shad drifted and fished near jetty tops in 5 to 25 feet of water. Bream are biting well on crickets and black Rooster Tails near grassy edges. Black bass are hanging near the sand bars with concentrated shad; square-billed shad-colored crankbaits are producing well. Stripers are below locks 9 and 10 and are biting fairly well on live shad or bream in the late evening. White bass are chasing shad early and late around the sandbars. Crappie are around overhangs in Point Remove Creek and Flagg Lake Cutoff.

Arkansas River (Little Rock Pool)

Vince Miller from Fish ’N Stuff said the water is low and clear. Bass are biting well on soft-plastics and spinnerbaits fished quickly over the top of jetties. A lot of fish are being caught, but very few are keepers. Catfishing is good on worms and cut bait.

McSwain Sports Center (501-945-2471) said the water is clear and at normal level. Bream are fair on crickets. Crappie are biting well on minnows. Bass are fair on crankbaits and jigs. Catfishing is good on cut skipjack.

Clear Lake

McSwain Sports Center (501-945-2471) said the water is clear and at normal level. Bream are fair on crickets. Crappie are biting well on minnows. Bass are fair on spinnerbaits and buzzbaits. Catfishing is good on nightcrawlers.

Peckerwood Lake

Herman’s Landing (870-241-3731) said the water is clear and at normal level. Bream are slow. Crappie are biting well on minnows and jigs. Bass are fair, but no report on the best lures. Catfishing is good on nightcrawlers and prepared baits.

ARKANSAS: Greer’s Ferry – topwater bite good on Worms, Jigs & C-riged Lizards

Thursday, August 18th, 2011

The water level at Greers ferry is at 462.56 and falling that is 1.53 feet above normal pool.

The hybrids and white bass are back to eating better than they have been due to the recent rain and cooler water temps and more oxygen , use topwater baits ,in-line spinners, grubs, swimbaits as well as spoons, find the bait and the fish will be close by, and just be patient and you can catch some.

The bream bite is good shallow as the full moon spawn is over and they are guarding the young and eating crawlers, catalpa worms, crickets, crankbaits and topwater baits shallow as out to 27 feet of water

The recent rains should help the walleye bite, try crawlers dragged on jighead and try a drop shot rig, with crawlers on in 23-48 feet of water.

Catfish are still good all over the lake as most bait at a lot of depths will work.

Crappie is suspended in pole timber in 15-25 feet over 60-100 feet of water and will eat jig and jigs tipped with minnows

Bass fishing is good shallow, they are up chasing bream and the topwater bite is good as well as the deeper bite, on worms ,jigs and c-riged lizards  from 15 feet out to 50

ARKANSAS: White Bass, Kentucky Bass & Largemouth Bass Schooling in Mud Lake

Thursday, August 4th, 2011

It is HOT and Largemouth Bass are very lethargic during mid day, best early and late and bite shuts off during the heat of mid-day.

The bite over the past week, has become much more seasonal with continued increase of surface temperatures, reduced current in Little River, and virtually non-existent during the hottest mid-day part of these 100+ days.

White bass, Kentucky bass, and Largemouth Bass, were schooling in Mud Lake, Horseshoe Lake, Hurricane Creek, and McGuire Lake oxbows over the past week between 6-9am chasing large pods of threadfin shad.

Surface temps were consistent over the past week’s daytime highs, and are currently ranging 85 F early to 91 F later in the afternoon hours, depending on rain, wind, incoming fresh water, location and time of day.  Call the USACE for lake level daily updates, Little River current, discharge release, and tail water levels.

Lake level as of Monday 01 August, is 255.80 mfsl, and slowly falling, which is 41″ below normal due to four foot drawdown conditions.  Normal consv. pool is 259.20 feet.  The USACE has reduced the total discharge to 348CFS (cubic feet/ second) with 5 gates open at 1 foot.  The tailwater level as of Monday was 225.39 mfsl.  Clarity on main lake is good.  Visibility is currently ranging approx 12-15 inches in the River depending on location.  The oxbow’s clarity are much improved, slight stain, but much better and ranging approx 3-5 feet visibility depending on location.  Water quality improving lake-wide, due to recent more normal weather patterns, reduced wind, and virtually no incoming rain or thunderstorms.  Clarity and visibility can change dramatically on Millwood in just a few hours with high winds.

The final of three, successive, four-foot drawdowns are in progress, and scheduled to run through mid February 2012.  These four foot drawdowns over the past 3 years have been deemed a huge success by fishermen and residents of the lake by helping eliminating unwanted vegetation and drying lake bed to increase storage capacity of the lake during normal pool levels.

ARKANSAS: Norfork Lake – Best Bite for Walleye is at 28-ft

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011

Steve reports the Norfork lake level has been very stable for several days at 573.4 which is 8 feet lower than crest with little or no generation until today. Surface temperature is still in the mid 80′s and the lake clearing. The thermocline is at 19 feet and that is where many fish are. They are especially on main lake points right at the end of the trees.

Bink reports the best bite for walleye is at 28-ft. using a clown colored 1/2 oz. spoon. Stripers are at 20-30 ft. using the 3/4 oz. purple back spoon. White bass are at 0-40 ft. using the white 1/4 oz. spoon. There are fish being caught throughout the whole lake from top to bottom.

ARKANSAS: Bass – Soft Plastic Baits in 25 to 35 Feet of Water

Wednesday, June 8th, 2011

The lake is down to 692 and still dropping a few inches a day. Everybody wants to know how fast and when the lake will get back to normal. I don’t think anybody knows that. From my experience it will depend on how much rain we get. It will also depend on how fast they drop table rock lake. That area is “special” and gets “special” treatment. :(   They usually get their lake dropped first. So, I would assume as soon as it gets closer to normal then we will be dropping faster. The lake temp is in the lower 70′s with a thermocline forming shallow around the 5 foot level or so I am told. I will be in the water the next few days and will be able to tell you more.

I am told that the White River is back to normal level of 8 generators. Two generators are broken but they are running 6 generators with the flood gates open to the equivalent of two generators. So- there is no problems fishing, launching, staying at the White River as of now! HOO RAY!

The fishing on the lake hasn’t changed much yet. It should soon. I have been getting lots and lots of questions about the “night fishing” thing. So here goes. Pick a spot on the lake. It might take several times to find the right spot but I don’t think it matters too much. You want to anchor in 30 to 70 feet of water. Put out a couple of lights that float on the water. This will bring a variety of bait fish starting with very small plankton, then small minnows/shad, then larger shad. The key is to get the larger shad ( 3-4 inches) around your lights. These will start doing a circle pattern around your boat under the lights. These will attract the catchable fish such as White Bass, Walleye, catfish, etc. I will take a bucket of regular minnows that we sell here at the marina and use them until I can catch the circling shad under the lights. I have made my own net to do this with. Most people use a throwable cast net to catch the shad and then use the shad they catch. Minnows seem to work for me but the circling shad you catch are natural in the lake and the fish love em. I put my bait in 25 to 50 feet of water. I will vary it until I find where the fish seem to be biting. If you never get circling shad around the boat then MOVE until you find them. I have seen this used on bluff walls, flats, channel swings, etc. Good Luck if you can stay awake. Until next time!

BASS -

1. Soft plastic baits in 25 to 35 feet of water on the “old shoreline.” This is where the brush stops and the old shoreline starts where there is no brush. I think the hungry fish hang in this spot because its easy to catch their prey here. A lot of the stuff they eat will be in the brush and hard to get to, but anything that is on the old gravel-no brush shoreline will be easier to catch. Try a variety or different baits and mix it up. Tube jigs, gitzits, 4 inch finesse worms, 5-7 inch plastic worms, french fry worms, lizards, brush hogs etc. Green pumpkin, cotton candy, brownish seem to be the best colors.

2. regular plastic worms with no weight in 0 to 10 feet of water in the brush. This pattern is a little harder to fish and takes heavy line but can be productive. Green pumpkin or bubble gum seem to be the best baits.

3. retrieve a spoon- sit out from the shoreline and cast a spoon in and retrieve it back varying speeds and depths. Sometimes you want to let it hit the bottom. The last time the water was this high in 07-08, this pattern was catching all species of fish.

4. Spinner baits in colored water back in the creeks. Bright colored big bladed baits will catch largemouth in dingy water.

5. Flipping a jig in the dirty water around the brush will catch bass in shallow water.

6. Minnow fishing with a split shot or jig and minnow is producing all species of fish, bass, walleye, crappie, white bass ect.

7 Drop shot a night crawler from 5 to 35 feet depending on the bank and structure. The standing trees out from the shoreline are a good place to try this, as well as the old shoreline in 25 to 35 feet of water.

8. Top water minnow looking baits are producing some fish – Flukes, spooks, pop r’s, chug bugs, etc.

Walleye -

1.Drop shot a night crawler from 25 to 35 feet depending on the bank and structure. The standing trees out from the shoreline are a good place to try this and then the old shoreline in 25 to 35 feet of water.

2. Split shot a night crawler and drift fish with in in 20 to 35 feet of water

3. Retrieve a spoon form the bank very slow

4. vertical jig a spoon

White Bass -

1. cast some type of minnow bait on the gravel flats on the old shore line

2. night fishing under lights

Crappie -

1. night fishing under lights

Catfish -

Lots of catfish being caught on limb lines from 5 to 25 feet of water.
