ALABAMA: Catching Bream with Light Line and Tackle is a blast

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012

With a three day tournament on the lake for military veterans, the lakes been pretty active with boats over the past two days.

I fished around Ryan Creek Marina on Monday and put together a real nice bag of bass right by the launch. I am getting ready for this weekend otherwise. It’s prime time for bream on Smith Lake. While bream have been on the bed since last month, they’ll be in full swing on the full moon. I spent Tuesday morning with a client picking of several bream and shell crackers in the 1 – 2 pound range. We box our limit and called it a day, with our only heart brake coming right before we headed in. He lost a shell cracker that was pushing 3 pounds. The biggest bream i’ve seen this year by far. While I don’t spend a lot of time fishing for bream through the rest of the year, I kill them during this time of year. It’s fun and you have constant action all day long. If you have kids and want them to experience fishing for the first time, bream trips can provide constant action. Which I find important with kids during there younger years.

No matter what age you are, catching bream with light line and tackle is a blast.  Plus they taste great and are easy to filet.

ALABAMA: There was More Bait Circling the Light Then I Have Ever Seen

Monday, April 2nd, 2012

With the spawn coming to a end, I spent the weekend dodging rain and fishing through heavy fog on Sunday. After making a run in a total whiteout, we arrived at Mallard Point and stopped on a light close to the point. Upon us pulling up, there was more bait circling the light then I’ve ever seen. As we got closer they weren’t the only thing on the light either. Plenty of 12-20 lbs. stripers rolling through the light, so I knew we where in business. On the fourth cast my client hooked up and it was on. I started to move the boat so we could keep the fish from making a run under the dock. With in a minute the fish turned and made a run. It rapped him up around the lights and you could see the lights swimming in circles. As we moved in, I grabbed the rod to make sure the fish was still on. It took one client holding the rod, the other client holding the net, and me hand lining the fish up. After a couple minutes we worked the fish up and boated him. After netting the fish and seeing how many times he rapped us, I couldn’t believe we landed this fish. 99.9% of the time this fish would have broke off, but not Sunday. I told my client, landing that fish was like winning the lottery.

With the water temp. steadily rising, I am getting ready for April’s full moon. That should bring in the bream to bed, it usually happens on the first full moon of May. But this year is different and I’m willing to bet it will start this month. Nothing beats big bull bream fishing with light line on ultra light rods.

ALABAMA: Didn’t Seem to Matter What Lure We Used

Friday, February 17th, 2012

Today was one of the best morning fishing for stripers in a while. With cloud coverage all morning, the bite stayed steady.

Even though it was cool this morning the stripes didn’t seem to mind. We started out with umbrella rigs and a couple different lures on the downrigger. It didn’t seem to matter what lure we used, as long as you put it in front of them. We caught fish in depths ranging from 15-40 feet deep. Their arms where a little tired by 9am, so we took a minute and ate a snack. Reeling in 150 feet of line over and over, with a fish on can give you a pretty good work out. No huge fish, but we had two (20lb+) and several fish between (12-16lbs) and lots of (5-10lb) fish. Other than dropping my iPhone in the lake today, the fishing was great. I had such a good day, it made it easier to deal with the lose of the phone.

The 10 day forecast looks pretty good. With average temperatures between 50 and 60, fishing should continue to be good. There’s only one thing you need this time of year, rain gear! Some of the best days I’ve had on the water are on day with rain. This next month will be full of hit and miss shower, so done get locked in on the looking for perfect weather this time of year.

Hope to see you on the water.

ALABAMA: Bass – Doing Well Jigs and Bottom Rigs

Monday, February 13th, 2012

Bass – Doing well Jigs and bottom rigs are catching good fish around the shore lines. Top water early and late will produce some bites. Fishing deep around sunken structure is good with jigs or crank baits.

Crappie – Getting hotter, trolling the ledge tops with minnow tipped jigs is a good combo. Mid morning to mid day is a good time frame. If you want to add to the excitement, add a lipless crank bait to the mix. The hybrids and bass are feeding on the same shad as the Crappie.

Bream- Are really slow during the cold months.

Catfish – Good yea around for the relaxed fisherman. Bottom fishing is steady on the drops with cut bait or the usual catfish favor. Take a good book and relax between bites. If you want to read, you will usually have a hot bite to keep you busy.

The lake level is up over four feet and all the vegetation that had started to germinate in the warmer than normal winter will now make great cover for the craws and bait fish. Spring is going to be really hot on Lake Eufaula. The fish are healthy, sores are gone for the most part and the fish are growing. If you want to do your part to make them grow faster , eat a few of the 14 to 15.5 inch bass. They are too numerous and are all fighting for the same food source.

Dress in layers and take plenty of water for a days outing. Spark and Rehydrate are great to keep your energy up and focused on your fishing.

Please visit www.leekingbenefit.org and register for the June 9, 2012 tournament.

We are striving for 200 teams this year. Please pray about the weekend and join us to make a difference in the lives of these terminal children.

ALABAMA: Smith Lake – Used a Stop & Go Pace for Dropping My Umbrella Rigs

Wednesday, January 4th, 2012

Friday – December 30, 2011

On Friday the day started out tough, after falling in the water and busting my butt. I had about 5 minutes to get things figured out and man up to go fishing. Friday the fish were more spread out. Most were still in depths of 25-40 feet, but we didn’t find any big groups of fish. We got more swats, than commitments. While we caught fish, most of them were small. We caught most our fish in Millers Flat.

Saturday – December 31st, 2011

I had two seniors from Athens High School whose dads wanted to give them a reward for all their hard work. Both young men on the boat are going to play college ball, one at Auburn and one at UAB.

Saturday morning was foggy and it didn’t lift until around 9:30.

We started on the back side of Goat Island and with no luck, we headed to Millers Flat. Upon arriving there, right away things were different. The bait and the fish were all pinned to the bottom in depths ranging from 45-65 feet mostly. Not many suspended fish; I used a stop and go pace for dropping my umbrella rigs to where they needed to be. 90% of our bites came when I put the boat in neutral, and allowed the umbrella rig to drop in more of a pendulum motion. After doubling up and catching several more, the bite seemed to fade. We headed back to Goat Island and pick up one more before we called it a day. All in all it was a good day, after a slow start things picked up and we had a good time. Hope everybody that took a trip with me last year had a good time and I look forward to all of this years trips.

ALABAMA: Warming Trends can Induce Winter Bass to Move Shallow & Feed Heavily

Monday, December 12th, 2011

There are six man-made impoundment’s Weiss Lake, Neely Henry Lake, Logan Martin Lake, Lay Lake, Mitchell Lake and Jordan Lake located from northeastern Alabama to mid-Alabama.

Originally this was the Coosa River System, with no lakes. Now man-made dams seperate each man-made impoundment.

But these dams do not seperate the excellant bass fishing that is to be found on each lake, even during the winter season month’s of December, January and February.

The three upper Coosa River lakes Weiss, Neely Henry and Logan Martin lakes are often drawn down for winter pool as much as 4-5 feet below normal, full pool lake levels.

* Take Caution – These three upper Coosa River low water lakes, are dangerous for boaters and will be down several feet until April.

The three lower Coosa River lake’s Lay Lake, Mitchell and Jordan Lake’s are all kept at full pool year round.

These three lakes are loaded with aquatic weeds, they all have plenty of wood and rock cover, and each lake harbors a very noteworthy wintertime adversary — for any angler to do battle with — the Coosa River breed of Spotted Bass.

The lower you go on the Coosa River System the bigger the “spots” seem to get, even during the winter! With Alabama’s Jordan lake, located near Montgomery, Alabama showing past wintertime trophy spotted bass, those in the 5-6 pound class, very common.

Warming trends, such as the one Alabamian’s are enjoying this mid-December week (in upper-60′s to low-70′s) can induce some otherwise slow and sluggish early winter bass, to suddenly move shallow and feed heavely.

Especially the spotted bass that thrive in winter’s often cold waters, from down in the 40′s one week, to the 60′s the next week! So make plans now to be there!

ALABAMA: Hooked Several on Umbrella Rigs & Live Bait

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011

Sunday, rapped up a good week of fishing after the rain cleared out earlier this week.

I’ve spent time fishing everywhere from Rock Creek, Coon Creek, and now Goat Island. I was hoping the wind would lay down some, but it was steady and only got worse as the day went on.  We started south of Big Bridge and worked our way north.  We caught a couple stripe in Coon Creek, but nothing to talk about and started to move north.

We  stopped  at a couple places before ending up by Goat Island. We hooked several on the umbrella rigs, before putting them up and getting the live bait out. Hoping to increase our size, but it never did.  We caught fish good till about 10am, then it slowed down and we picked up two stripes drifting live bait  The stripe bite has finally picked up pretty good.  We caught them this morning in depths ranging from 20-35 feet.  We picked both of our earlier afternoon fish up in 45-50 feet.  The wind made it tuff for most of the afternoon as there was about a 15-20 mph wind.  No bass fishing today, pick two slots up by accident on bucktail jigs.  We fished different style umbrella rigs with both swimbait and bucktail rigs.  Bucktail rigs caught almost all the fish.  We used 4″ to 6″ Mister Twisters as trailers.  White was the top color with chart/white, and shad colors following.

Looks like I’ll get tomorrow in before the rain, weather looks good for this coming up weekend.

ALABAMA: We Used Umbrella Rigs & Live Bite, Bite was Steady All Morning

Tuesday, November 29th, 2011

After spending Wednesday and Friday chasing stripe, it’s been a good fishing.

While on Wednesday we caught bigger stripes, Friday was all about numbers. We used umbrella rigs and live bite, the bite was steady all morning. Alex, an 8 year old hooked his first stripe and caught a double on Friday. But he also had fun playing with the bait. We caught most of our fish 25-30 deep. While picking up a couple around 40 feet deep on live bait. We also caught several nice bass, most were caught on jerkbaits and scroungers. Bass busted off and on all Friday morning. I’ve been fishing within 4 miles of big bridge the last couple day and will continue tomorrow on my other trip.

Wednesday and Friday both were good trips, with good people.

ALABAMA: Cast a Curly Tail Jig into the School of Redfish

Monday, November 21st, 2011

http://Dig-In-Anchors.comNearshore Orange Beach Fishing

November gave us some great fishing for bull redfish in Orange Beach just as we expected.

December should be even better with the cooler temps.

I prefer a north wind for the best redfish activity. The cool fronts will push the bait near the coastline and the bull redfish should follow. Watch for diving birds and especially the pelicans. The redfish will push the bait to the surface and the birds will attack the bait from above. After seeing this, you may choose to cast a curly tail jig into the school of redfish.

I prefer light spinning tackle with 20 pound test line and a 1 – 2 ounce lead head jig with a red, white or green curly tail grub. You may cast and retrieve or jig slowly vertically. When these bull redfish are feeding they will attack quickly. When you see bull reds on the surface, cast a topwater plug into the school and twitch it with a medium retrieve and hang on. This can be awesome. If you see no birds, bait or fish, then you may place trolling lures such as stretch 25′s and 30′s behind the boat and troll at 4 to 6 knots. This will often help you to locate a school of redfish when they are not feeding on the surface. The bull redfish should be around through the winter and into early Spring.

Offshore Orange Beach Fishing

Offshore fishing Orange Beach should be good through the winter. I would recommend fishing 100 feet and deeper in the cold months. You can still catch amberjack, vermillion snapper, white snapper, triggerfish, scamp and red grouper through the winter. Always try cut squid and whole squid. Live bait is good when you can find it. Watch the weather forecast and find you a nice day between cold fronts.

ALABAMA: Smith Lake – We caught most our fish on points

Monday, November 14th, 2011

Cold Morning, Hot Fishing In Afternoon

I headed up to the lake around 10:30 a.m.and stopped by Regal Marine located right off exit 299 Dodge City.

I talked with Heather about some up and coming work I needed done on my boat. After getting that squared away, I hit the road and headed for “big bridge”. I had my son with me today, so I had a camera man. I just got a new camera after losing my other one about a month ago. I will have pictures of today’s fish and a little video too. You’ll have to forgive the camera work, my son did the filming. But for his first time, he did ok.

We hit the water right around 12:00 p.m. I was wondering how the cold night would affect the fishing. It did take long to find out and we didn’t have to go far to get the action started. There was about a 5 – 10 mph wind when we started. We headed right to the island by big bridge and picked up were I left off the other day. I had about 5 different jerkbaits tied on poles and only fished two all day. I started with a Lucky Craft Pointer 95 Ghost Pearl Ayu and picked up a couple spots. I then switched over to a Lucky Craft Pointer 100 sp in the same color and picked up some with a little more size. After catching 5 off the island I went under big bridge and across to the point. I fired the 100sp toward the point and hooked up with a slot spot. This continued with several 1 1/2 – 2 pound spots and one big one. I caught 11 fish on that point, all on the Lucky Craft 100sp. I fished it the rest of the day and keep whacking them. We caught most our fish on points, I didn’t fish back in many pockets. I boated over 30 fish in a little more than 3 hours, not many dinks.

If your interested in fishing Smith Lake, right now the bass fishing is on fire.
