CONNECTICUT: Trout Often Concentrated in Typically Deeper Locations

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012

Opening Day anglers found most streams at low levels with trout often concentrated in typically deeper locations. Fish were often seen, but weren’t always biting.

Sunday’s rains did improve conditions in many streams, as flows in most areas are now back up near to their typical spring levels.

Some nice fish came to net on Opening Day, with many over 20 inches. A 24.75 inch rainbow trout topped out as the largest trout reported this week. Best reports from the West Branch Farmington River, Farmington River, Salmon River (a 19”, 4.5 lb rainbow, a 5.8 lb rainbow and a 5 lb brown trout among the catches), Naugatuck River (15 trout for one angler), Farmill River, Pomperaug River (22” rainbow trout), Hockanum River, Farm River and Coginchaug River. Some action also reported from Sandy Brook, East Aspetuck River, Mill Pond Broad Brook, Saugatuck River, Pootatuck River, Scantic River, Mianus River, Pequonnock River, Yantic River, Fenton River Shetucket River, Hammonasset River, Eightmile (Haddam/Lyme) River, Moosup River and the Willimantic River TMA, although anglers had to work with very low flows and easily spooked fish in many places.

CONNECTICUT: We’ll be Heading for Sebastian, Florida

Friday, November 11th, 2011

We had planned on pulling MY BONNIE out of the water on November 12, but we’ll be doing it a bit sooner because of the very cold weather and high winds we’ve been experiencing here for the past two weeks, including a heavy snowfall last Saturday. Not too many clients are interested in going out in these conditions.

Once the boat’s on land we’ll get her ready for the long winter layover, and then in late November we’ll be heading for Sebastian, Florida where—if all goes well—our southern charters will commence by mid-December.

All in all, this season was somewhat disappointing. The bluefish weren’t huge, and the striped bass weren’t where they should be. Although the porgy catch was bountiful, and we got a lot of nice fluke, the blackfish were hard to find, and we never did get to enjoy the fall migration of large blues and lunker stripers. Perhaps the diehards who are willing to keep their boats in Long Island Sound through early December will see that kind of action—which used to be something we could count on every November.

CONNECTICUT: Things just started to get going in the Fall mode

Monday, October 3rd, 2011

Its been an up and down month so far.

Things just started to get going in the Fall mode when the warm spell came and the water temps went back to Summer levels.

The albies showed up about when due and were starting to bunch up and start eating like they should. It got warmer and they got fussier. Some days it was OK and others you couldn’t buy a bite. Todays trip showed some promise with good numbers readily taking flies. With the upcoming cold spell, that should get the baitfish moving out bringing the start of the Fall run.

CONNECTICUT: Casting Spin Tackle Around Watch Hill Reefs Very Productive

Monday, September 12th, 2011

Fishing before the storm was excellent to outstanding and remained the same after the wind died down as well.

Casting spin tackle around the Watch Hill reefs was very productive in spite of the crowded conditions with stripers in the 26-33 in. class. Also, diamond jigging and 3 waying bucktails in the race provided catches on almost every drift, in spite of the muddied waters from river runoff. Blackfish season is around the corner.

If this Oct. is anything like last year it will be a great finish to the season with plenty of hard fighting great tasting fish.

CONNECTICUT: Fish Are Up on Top and Eating Butterfish

Thursday, August 4th, 2011

This past week has seen an influx of bigger bluefish in the eastern sound.

These fish are up on top and are eating butterfish. They seem to be in two groups. Those that are in the six to eight pound range and the ones that are in the twelve to fifteen pound range. We were pretty much by ourselves when we tangled with the big ones on our last trip.

On our way back to the dock we passed large schools of these fish finning on top.

CONNECTICUT: We Had Serious Bluefishing

Monday, August 1st, 2011

We had a couple of cancellations over the past ten days because of the extremely hot weather and one lightning storm. But on Thursday we sailed with Gary Stanitis of Central Valley NY, along with two of his business colleagues. We began the day at 28C; doing some chunking, with little results. But the winds picked up, and we couldn’t stay there too long, so we made our way across the Sound, with waves pounding our boat.

At the L.I. shoreline, however, the winds were calmer, and at Sunken Meadow and the Nissoquogue we found lots of sand eels. Drifting, we picked up some fluke, after which we had serious bluefishing for two hours.

We were out with Dan Harknett of Norwalk, along with his father, Tom, a resident of of New Jersey, and his wife. We began the trip heading eastward, and we found a school of bluefish on the surface, with the action lasting more than two hours; the fish came in at 4-6 pounds, which is lots of fun on light tackle. One of the passengers also landed a 20in keeper fluke, as a by-catch. On our way in we also brought in a schoolie striper.

On Wednesday, the 27th, we had an afternoon trip with Christian Upright of Norwalk, and his father, Brian, visiting from Florida. The action was a bit slow, with a slack tide that didn’t help, but they brought in some bluefish, porgies and fluke.

CONNECTICUT: Bass Averaging Eight Pounds

Saturday, June 11th, 2011

This week brought the first consistent numbers of squid in our area.

This also brought a good number of keeper sized bass. Our trips this week were all good with fish averaging eight pounds and several upwards of 15 pounds. All of these were taken on a fly. As long as the bait holds up the migrating bass will stick around.

Both tides fished equally as well. We saw our first schools of bass on top in the inshore waters.

CONNECTICUT: Used Live Eels to Catch Bass

Friday, June 10th, 2011

Just got back from the Race after being chased off the water by the T-storms.

Jeff Haines and crew were catching fish on every drift Three-waying swim baits just before the front arrived and forced us to leave em biting. Bass made up most of the catch, but bluefish to 8lbs. mixed in as well.On the way back we came across hundreds of dogfish finning on the surface!Never saw anything like it. Wed. evening we used live eels to catch bass to 41″.

Fishing was excellent, we caught our limit in short order and released numerous fish from 30″- 38″.

CONNECTICUT: Bite for Large Stripers Appears to Begin Late

Friday, May 27th, 2011

On Wednesday two friends and I scouted the western waters, including Rye and Mamaroneck in Westchester, Greenwich CT, and across the Sound in Hempstead L.I.

Lots of boats were in the Hempstead area, but we saw little action. We brought in one 18-pound striper in the middle of the morning, but the bite for large stripers appears to begin late in the evening and slows down for the most part around dawn. We found bluefish 12-13 pounds under bunker schools, with 2-6 pounders finning on top.

Fluking is beginning to heat up on the Long Island Side and around the Nissaquogue.
