FLORIDA: Snook, Redfish, Mangrove Snapper, Flounder & Jack Crevelle Caught Along Oyster Bars

Fishing started out pretty good and improved throughout the week. Very low tides have speckled trout and Spanish mackerel cruising the edges of grass flats that fall sharply into deeper water. Snook, redfish, mangrove snapper, flounder and jack crevelle are being caught along oyster bars and mangrove shorelines on the north end of Siesta Key. Live pilchards and threadfins accounted for most of the fish.

Long time client Terry Mark from Olean NY fished with me on Monday. We did well on Spanish mackerel to 3 lbs, speckled trout to 17″and ladyfish near the Ringling bridge. We ran to the mouth of Phillippi Creek and caught a couple of 3 lb jacks.

On Tuesday, Cathy and John Mlotzek from Ohio did very well despite a stiff NE breeze, landing 5 fat trout in the slot along with several Spanish mackerel, a bunch of ladyfish, and a couple of small flounder on live bait near Bird Key.

Wednesday was terrific! Keith Williams and his son Thomas from the UK experienced non-stop action on mackerel, decent trout, and large ladyfish near Bird Key. We then worked bars and shorelines at the north end of Siesta key and caught redfish, jack crevelle, flounder, and mangrove snapper. Thomas completed his “slam”, landing a snook on his last cast!

Wil Rutenschroer and his son Gary from Cincinnati, Oh fished with me later in the week. Action on speckled trout was very good, with the two of them landing fish of 24″, 21″, and 19″ on the deep edges near Bird Key. The fish hit large live shrimp. I netted up some bait and they caught Spanish mackerel and ladyfish, too. We finished up catching mangrove snapper and jack crevelle near the Stickney Pt Bridge.
